Disney Offers Up
a Clean, White Space New
York Times - Like Times Square, Disney’s home page is a
crowded, noisy place. Starting next week (Monday around 1 p.m.,
to be specific) there will be something radically different — a
completely silent, blank canvas surrounded by creativity tools.Create on Disney.com is a suite of four open-ended activities that pushes the envelope for Web-delivered creativity tools. At the core of Create is Digital Painter, with features that Photoshop users used to dream about: unlimited undo or redo, unlimited layers that can be moved after they’re placed, and no limits to the number of objects that can be stamped on the screen. Basic drawing tools let you highlight, sketch or blob on watercolors — with a color palette that can be programmed with your favorite colors. Besides the Digital Painter, three other activities are Animods, for creating animated creatures; Comic Creator, with white blank panels waiting to be filled in with graphics, text and Disney clip art; and Photo Mashups, an open-ended celebration of Disney celebrity — where you can drag and drop the Jonas Brothers and compose a room poster. Projects can be tagged and stored on the Disney site, after it has been approved by a panel of screeners based in Disney’s Kerpoof Studios, in Boulder, Colo. So what’s the catch? Besides the images of Toaster Strudel that flash as ads near the screen, you’re quick to learn that you can’t save your work unless you become a Disney Guest. This means giving up a bit of your identity, specifically, your birthday and e-mail address. You also can’t upload your own images, or export your work as a graphics file, an important feature that has a “coming soon” sign on it. You can print at any time, however. Once you join, your work is saved in your portfolio, for showing inside the virtual magic kingdom. So now, in spirit anyway, even the youngest child can be a Disney artist. Walt Disney would most likely approve. |

Disney 101: What is the best age for young children to visit
Walt Disney World? Examiner - Q: What is the best age for young children to visit Walt Disney World? A: It depends upon the comfort level of each individual child, but families visit Disney with kids of all ages. Although some people advocate waiting for that first magical trip to Walt Disney World, taking younger children has many benefits. First of all, children under three gain free admission to all Disney World theme parks and water parks. Also, a one-year-old will not argue with siblings or adults about which ride to go on next. My son was 14 months old when we first took him to Walt Disney World. Aside from pulling my hair when we waited in a long line for the Dumbo ride, he enjoyed the long day at the Magic Kingdom. Having just started walking a couple months before our trip, every step was an adventure. For a curious one-year-old (or a baby, for that matter), rides are not even a requirement for endless amusement at the Disney parks. One of my son's favorite activities was dancing to the beat of drums activated by his steps in front of the Adventureland totem poles. Crawling around Chef Mickey's restaurant with Goofy following quickly behind was another exciting adventure. An added bonus of traveling with babies and toddlers is that Disney World cast members and characters show them an extra bit of Disney magic. Mickey Mouse visited the Magic Kingdom's Baby Care Center--located near the Crystal Palace restaurant--and took the time to let my son sit on his lap. Over several subsequent trips with our annual passes, Mickey soon became his favorite character. The first time my son expressed a preference for a Disney ride was actually before he was able to speak (except to say Muh-muh, which later became Mummy). He used a special all-purpose baby word to indicate that he wanted to go on Small World, a favorite with children all over the world since it debuted at the 1964 World's Fair. Disney World did more than motivate my son to articulate his concerns, however. Over his toddler years, he would learn his colors from the stripes on the Walt Disney World monorail. He gained an appreciation for world cultures before he had even entered preschool. A frequent diner at 'Ohana, "Polynesian" became one of his first words. One of the only times my son cried at Disney World was when we tried to skip the educational movie that follows the Maelstrom boat ride in the Norway pavilion at Epcot. One of the benefits of living in Florida is that Disney World has become an extension of our backyard, a place where regular trips with family and friends provide a temporary escape from the burdens of domestic drudgery and hectic work schedules. Following Walt Disney's original intentions for Disneyland, Disney World continues to provide Americans and travelers from around the world with the chance to enjoy family togetherness. The key to having a pleasant experience at the Disney World parks is preparation. Parents of babies, toddlers, and preschoolers should bring a bag or backpack with at least one change of clothes; diapers, wipes, and diaper rash ointment; pacifiers; disposable diaper changing pads; bibs; formula if babies are not breastfed; juice; sippy cups; baby food; containers with snacks such as Cheerios or Goldfish; hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen; and several toys. Guests who forget an item can purchase it at the Baby Care Center (each theme park has one) or at a gift shop. Healthy snacks such as fresh fruit, yogurt, and milk are available for purchase at the theme parks. Don't forget to pack a camera and a video camera, and take a cell phone to keep in touch with other members of your party. Children will inevitably make a mess, so take several changes of clothes instead of getting upset when an accident happens. When a child becomes fussy, it is the parent's job to remember that it is nap time. Do not let your child scream in her stroller. Remember that Disney World can provide too much stimulation for young children at times. Disney also offers many creative ways to help a child fall asleep. At the Magic Kingdom, try the Carousel of Progress in Tomorrowland. Sitting in a darkened, air conditioned theatre with music can be just the trick a tired child needs. At Epcot, place your child in her stroller and take a ride on Friendship I, the boat that ferries guests from one side of World Showcase to the next. The vibrations on the floor of the boat are sure to put a young child to sleep in his stroller (this is easier than holding the child and trying to place him in his stroller after he falls asleep). Whichever theme park you visit, be sure to take a standard reclining stroller. Umbrella strollers and the strollers Disney World rents do not recline, which makes nap time challenging. Another advantage to traveling with babies and young children is the savings in food costs. A kids' meal can cost more than $5 at the parks, whereas there is no additional charge for sharing your meal with a young child. Nonetheless, it is wise to bring healthy snacks and juice boxes in order to avoid feeding your baby or toddler french fries or carbonated beverages. Disney World has taken steps to make its children's meals healthier in recent years. Parents now have the option of ordering grapes, apple sauce, or carrots instead of French fries; most restaurants also offer apple juice or milk instead of soda. Avoid the temptation to splurge on environmentally unfriendly water bottles. Disney World restaurants serve ice water for free. Simply ask for a cup of ice water instead of bottled water, which requires a great deal of energy (and plastic) to produce. No matter what age your child is when you take that first trip to Walt Disney World, be sure to attend to his or her needs and the entire family will have an enjoyable, memorable vacation. |

Should Disney Hire Rob Zombie for 'Pirates of the Caribbean 4' WorstPreviews - Walt Disney Pictures is moving forward with a fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie that will focus on Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) searching for the fountain of youth. Gore Verbinski will not return to direct the new film, so Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer had to search for his replacement. Last we heard, Rob Marshall (Chicago, Nine) was in negotiations. Now, director Rob Zombie (Halloween) has revealed to MTV News that he would be interested in directing the new "Pirates of the Caribbean" installment. "I would love to make a pirate movie," he said. "I actually tried pitching a pirate movie way before 'Pirates of the Caribbean,' and everyone was like, 'Pirate movies don't work.'" Since Marshall has not been officially hired yet, should Disney consider Zombie for the job? |

Text "Disney" for Deal Travel Agent Central - In an effort to capitalize on the “Twitter generation” Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort has launched a new text-messaging program to notify guests of deals. Visitors to the Lake Buena Vista, Florida resort who don’t mind getting the occasional buzz from their cell phone can opt to receive text messages about deals at the resort’s spa, restaurants, and lounges during their stay. So why not just look up the deals online and avoid the jarring beep while relaxing poolside? The resort claims that all of the text message deals offered through the program will be of greater value than those available to the general public. "Whether our guests are relaxing in their room, lounging by the pool or enjoying a day in the theme parks, they can access immediate savings from their mobile phone," said Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin General Manager Paul Scott. So is there really a market for text message advertisements? According to CTIS, the cellular phone industry trade group, over 85 percent of Americans use mobile phones, with more than one trillion text messages sent last year. Hoping to catch info-gluttons between texting their friends and checking the latest baseball scores, Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort is one of the first to offer a program of this kind. Although it still remains to be seen if the idea will catch on, the resort does allow guests who become annoyed with the updates to actively opt out of the service at any time. Guests will automatically stop receiving the test messages after four days. Prior to announcing this new texting program, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort experienced success with its iPhone and iTouch application that provides users with access to in-depth resort information including pictures, videos, and a resort map. The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort is located in the heart of the Walt Disney World Resort in Central Florida. Nestled between Epcot and the Magic Kingdom Park, the resort is surrounded by restaurants, lounges, tennis courts, and nearby golf facilities. Stitch back in Magic Kingdom show for Mickey's Very Merry
Christmas Party Theme Park Rangers - A trusted source reports that Disney is reviving a Stitch show that will be presented this year during Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party at the Magic Kingdom. It's name: "A Totally Tomorrowland Christmas," but it will include the rascally character.

Disney Loans Cast Members to Heart of Florida United Way Disney News - As the largest corporate contributor to Heart of Florida United Way (HFUW), Walt Disney World Resort often gets attention for its charitable giving – Cast Members donate approximately $3 million annually to the organization. What is lesser known – but just as important – is that Walt Disney World Resort also annually makes a valuable in-kind contribution to HFUW by loaning Cast Members to assist the agency for three months with its annual fund-raising campaign. “The executives loaned to us by Walt Disney World Resort arrive already equipped with excellent skills,” said Leigh Smith, HFUW Vice President of Resource Development. “United Way will put their knowledge and talents to use through opportunities we provide for them to interact in the community and truly make a difference in the lives of others. They will return to Disney as even more effective leaders.” On a special full-time assignment through the end of November, Kathy Blake, a guest service manager for Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, and Danna Howell, a guest service manager for Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resort, will undergo accelerated training at Central Florida’s most comprehensive health and human services charity to help drive its fundraising efforts in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties. "It's just in my heart to help people," said Blake, who as a mother of seven was drawn to the unique opportunity for its ability to assist in improving the lives of children. "I want to visit every possible United Way agency and learn as much as I can. I'm representing Disney and I want them to be proud of what I've done for them." Equally as excited to step into the special role, Howell looks forward to learning more about how Walt Disney World Resort works with United Way to make a positive impact in Central Florida. HFUW annually builds a fundraising team of approximately 30 loaned executives from various local companies that in turn help more than 450 local companies implement their United Way workplace campaigns. Since 1992, Disney has loaned a total of 78 Executives to HFUW. Disney Cast Members have their chance to participate in the annual HFUW campaign now through September 18. HFUW and its nearly 100 partner agencies served more than 349,180 residents in need in 2008 throughout Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties. Nearly 52 percent of clients served by United Way-funded programs are under the age of 19. |

Observations about training on the Disney Wonder Examiner - This article presents observations from a recent cruise on the Disney Wonder and offers observations about the training process on the cruise ship. As a former leader in Walt Disney World Learning Solutions, this author knows a thing or two about how Disney trains its new “cast members.” The challenges Learning Solutions faced writing training for several thousand crew members spread out over 55 square miles at Walt Disney World were difficult enough. Imagine the difficulty in training a crew of 950 from over 60 countries that must work in excess of 80-hour workweeks, with shipboard positions range from navigation officers to entertainment performers. The challenge of getting it right is huge. It obviously works. In 2009, Conde Nast Traveler magazine recognized Disney Cruise Line as the No. 1 cruise experience in the 9th Annual “Cruise Poll” and the Disney Wonder itself as best ship cruise ship in it’s category. A recent cruise experience aboard the Disney Wonder provided the following observations. Service focus - To a person, every crew member encountered – captain, cruise director, cabin steward, head server, server, and assistant server – all asked a variation of the question, “What can we do to make your vacation everything you want it to be?” Togetherness - The crew members demonstrated friendliness towards each other, almost as if they were a part of an extended family. There were many examples of crew members greeting each other with hugs, engaging in friendly banter, and displaying a warm comfort with each other. This comfortable demeanor extended to the guests, with warm greetings, easy smiles, and open posture. This being a Disney cruise, special attention focused on children. Extras - The cabin stewards and restaurant servers all had their little extra bits of magic. Towel animals, magic tricks, interactive puzzles, and jokes were are employed. Special attention was focused on the children. The captain, upon encountering this author’s party on an elevator used his key card to bypass all elevator floors, in effect giving us an express ride and an extended opportunity to ask us how he could make our cruise more memorable. Our server offered – when one member of the party was experiencing sea sickness and left the dinner service before ordering – and then had delivered a four course meal directly to the stateroom. These and many more special touches were presented extemporaneously in spite of the very long hours worked. The restaurant servers’ workday begins around 7AM and doesn’t end until approximately 11PM. They work a multi-month contract, seven days and 80+ hours per week – breakfast, lunch and dinner – with only one lunch and one dinner shift off per month. How is all this possible? How can someone work so many hours per weeks and still maintain a friendly and focused attitude? Training is a process It is often said that training isn’t an event, it’s a process. On the Disney Wonder, the process works. Some of the practices that make this particular magic.
All this effort adds costs to the bottom line. But a friendly crew, clear job task responsibilities, targeted and specific training, a clear focus on the mission, and management delivering guest AND crew satisfaction increases return on investment in higher guest satisfaction levels and multiple return visits. Cruising may be a vacation for the 2,400 guests on board the Wonder, but neither training nor management can simply “cruise” to success. When it is done right, as it is on the Disney Cruise Line, it truly is a wonder to behold. |

Robin Williams in
Disney's 'Wedding' Variety - Robin Williams is plotting to run down the aisle for Disney, signing on to star in "Wedding Banned" for Touchstone Pictures. In the comedy, Williams will play one-half of a long-divorced couple who kidnap their daughter on her wedding day in order to keep her from making a mistake. The divorced parents rekindle their relationship as they elude cops and the angry groom. Deal quickly pairs up Williams again with Disney after making the comedy "Old Dogs," which bows Nov. 25 and also stars John Travolta. The Mouse House picked up the "Wedding" script from Jack Amiel and Michael Begler last summer for Mandeville's David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman to produce. Nicole Rocklin and Blye Faust, who developed the script with its scribes, also serve as producers on the pic. Amiel and Begler also penned the comedies "Raising Helen" and "The Shaggy Dog" for Mandeville. Mandeville most recently produced pic "The Proposal" and the upcoming "Surrogates" for Touchstone, and "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" for Disney before that. It's currently in production on Paramount's boxing drama "The Fighter." |

At Walt Disney World, you're surrounded by answers to all of
your questions
Examiner - There are
those who visit Walt Disney World and other Central Florida
tourist attractions and often muddle through, taking things as
they come and coping with the circumstances. They’ll ask how to
get to the restroom or some certain attraction they desire to
see, but when it comes to gaining genuine knowledge and advice,
many people rely on guidebooks and, these days, websites
dedicated to the subject. But if there is one resource where a
plethora of detailed information lies, it’s within the minds of
the oodles of people living and working right here in Central
Florida.
By all means, take advantage of this wealth of information. When you’re enjoying yourself in the parks or any other venue, you’ll see a lot of people who work there. Admittedly, a lot of these are part time help who truly know very little outside the scope of their particular location, and their scope of knowledge is usually limited to right where they work. While that can offer valuable information, the mileage is low. However, there are a lot of people (and I mean a lot of people) who have worked out there for years, some of them decades. Consider the fact that Walt Disney World has been there since 1971. Years earlier than that, if you consider the ground-breaking. So, this industry has been here at least that long, and since then, the Tourism & Hospitality Industry has been the chief industry of the region. The point is that a significant percentage of these people, particularly those who grew up in this region, know more than even they realize. To be honest, a lot of them know very little else regarding industries other than tourism. So, there is a wealth of information working all around you, and when you’re on vacation, the more information you have, the more value you’ll gain from your time and money. When I worked in the theme parks, I was asked a lot of questions by a lot of people. I recognized the market and did a lot of writing on the subject, such as what I am doing through this venue with Examiner. But I also noticed an inordinate amount of people appearing lost, dazed and confused, or downright frustrated because they needed information they did not have on hand. I did my best to talk with these people and ease their minds with information and knowledge I had gained, but since I am only one person, I could only do so much. Further, a lot of people I worked with desired to help, but they didn’t necessarily possess the skills needed to convey information in an effective way. Not everyone who works in a theme park is an out-and-out people person. Many people working in the theme parks today are part timers who do not have the dedication of a full time employee, which is basically just like everywhere else. But, there are still a lot of people who know more about where they work than you may ever need to know, so take the time to chat with some of the locals working where you’re playing. Not only might you learn something you didn’t even fathom before the conversation, but you just might make a friend. Moreover, you might gain insight on what it’s like to be there daily, which is an interesting thing in itself. More likely, you’ll gain helpful, practical information that you won’t find in most of those so-called guidebooks. If you take the time, the real time, to peruse the information presented in most guidebooks, you’ll see a lot of the information is presented in a way that’ll prompt you to buy the book rather than provide you genuine wisdom, knowledge and experience. So do your vacation a favor and ask around. Those people are
more than just animated road signs; they possess knowledge and
information that just might make all the difference in your
vacation. I say that with authority, because I have had people
tell me that |

The
trials of Disney rivals examined in program Arizona Republic - Practically everyone knows Mickey Mouse, but rival animation studios in the 1930s and '40s feared him like a rat. The studios' attempts to compete with Mickey are the subject of "(Expletive) Mickey Mouse," a film program by Dennis Nyback. Nyback's program includes examples of all three ("Red Hot Red Riding Hood" is a personal favorite). The program is scheduled for 7 and 9 p.m. Sept. 5 at Madcap Theatres , 730 S. Mill Ave., Tempe. Disneyland’s Main Street Magic Shop loses its magic
Now, Disneyland guests stroll into the same shop, only to find plain walls sparsely covered with generic Disney merchandise. Disney board games sit on one shelf, while Mickey gloves and hats sit on another. In its heyday, the shop was operated by Disney. Now, Disney is seeking a third party vendor to take over the shop. “We’re always looking for ways to improve our guests experience at Disneyland, including our merchandise offerings,” Disney spokeswoman Suzi Brown said. Disney is still looking into a new strategy for updating the shop. For now, the plan is to continue operating the shop as a “magic” shop, as opposed to another generic merchandise location. In the past, Disney had a number of specialty shops on Main Street, including a candle shop, flower mart, tobacco shop and a bra shop. Fantasyland also housed a similar magic shop, where comedian Steve Martin worked for three years. Although magic tricks can no longer be purchased at the nostalgic Main Street Magic Shop, a cart outside of the World of Disney store in Downtown Disney sells similar magic paraphernalia. |

Disney
hotel expansion means big bucks for city OCRegister - The city of Anaheim stands to make about $2.5 million annually in taxes from the expansion of a prestigious Disney hotel. The Grand Californian Hotel and Spa is undergoing a renovation that will add about 203 hotel rooms and 48 time share units when completed next month. With those new rooms, the city is counting on the extra bed tax money tied to the rooms. The new hotel rooms are projected to generate more than $2 million annually, while the time share units could make $464,748 the first year alone, according to city documents. The amount will go up each year. Hotel rooms’ taxes are calculated on a straight percentage. For time shares, city officials must compute the equivalent amount of taxes based on the time share’s value and reach agreements with operators. The City Council this week unanimously approved an agreement for Disney’s time share units without any discussion. The Grand Californian units, including two grand villas, will be the first West Coast destinations of the Disney Vacation Club, the company’s time share program.
Disneyland Resort spokeswoman Suzi Brown
said Disney officials are happy with the agreement in a prepared
e-mail statement: Hotel bed taxes make up the biggest chunk of Anaheim’s budget — a projected $79.6 million in 2009-10. The expansion of the Grand Californian is scheduled to open Sept. 23. Nearby, renovations on the Disneyland Hotel began Monday. Remodeled rooms could be available as early as January. |

ESPN 'Nude'
Issue Rumors Surface With Danica CNBC - Late last night, the popular blog SportsByBrooks published this headline: "Danica To Bare It All For ESPN Mag's 'Nude' Issue" The headline and the story got our attention because it was the first name that had surfaced after the announcement of The Body Issue was made in June. We put forth our top 10 men and women at the time who we thought might decide to take it all off, even though ESPN The Magazine editors were clear that this was not a condition of appearing in the publication.
First, we called Team
Danica. Lewis Kay of BNC public relations, which helps represent
Patrick, came back with this note. ESPN The Magazine's editor-in-chief Gary Belsky did not say as much on Patrick, but explained to us that, at some point, the magazine's officials would say who was in the issue before it hits the newsstands in October. "We are not announcing which athletes are participating in The Body Issue at this time," Belsky, wrote in an e-mail. "When we do reveal the participant list, we will not reveal who disrobed and who did not. The photos will answer most such questions, of course; and we will otherwise let the individual athletes reveal, should they so choose, whether they removed all clothing for our shoots." "Some are fully disrobing, some are not. That's why we're calling it The Body Issue, not The Nude Issue. In every case, the photos are appropriate and tasteful. The Body Issue is a celebration and exploration of the athletic form in all its glory and extremes, situated within the boundaries of taste and the frontiers of artistic excellence upon which ESPN The Magazine and ESPN have built their reputations." |

A&E Television
to acquire Lifetime AP - A&E Television Networks said Thursday it is acquiring Lifetime Entertainment Services, bringing the home of "Project Runway" into a stable of profitable channels that includes A&E and the History channel. Terms of the deal, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year, were not disclosed. A&E Television Networks is a joint venture between The Walt Disney Co., Hearst Corp. and General Electric Co.'s NBC Universal. Lifetime is already owned 50-50 by Disney and Hearst. Under the terms of the deal, NBC Universal may elect or be required to exit the venture within 15 years, which would make Disney and Hearst 50-50 partners in the larger group. The acquisition should result in cost savings by merging advertising sales forces and corporate overhead, and should be a positive for Disney shareholders, said David Joyce, an analyst with Miller Tabak & Co. "There's incremental streamlining of the operations, which could result in better margins and more of a stake in those cable networks over time," he said. "It doesn't move the needle for Disney in the grand scheme of things but it would skew positive." NBC Universal was already the junior partner in A&E Television Networks, with a 25 percent stake, compared with 37.5 percent each for Disney and privately held Hearst. If no cash was exchanged, NBC Universal's stake in the venture would shrink, giving it less of a strategic position, said Standard & Poor's analyst Tuna Amobi. What's more, Lifetime targets women viewers, which overlaps with the target demographic of NBC Universal's Oxygen. "This offers a clear path for NBC potentially to exit," Amobi said. Lifetime, A&E and History channels are among the top 10 cable networks on television. Combined, the three channels alone are expected to take in about $2.2 billion total from advertising and subscription fees this year, and generate about $740 million in cash, according to research firm SNL Kagan. With the addition of Lifetime channels, the group will now include: A&E Network, History, Lifetime Television, Lifetime Movie Network, Bio, History International, Lifetime Real Women, History en Espanol, Military History and Crime & Investigation Network. Disney shares rose 3 cents to $27.03 in afternoon trading Friday. General Electric shares were up 11 cents at $14.22. |

'Style star' may not be too far behind for Disney star, Grand
Prairie native Selena Gomez Dallas Morning News - Grand Prairie's Selena Gomez stars in Disney's Wizards of Waverly Place. She took time to answer our five top questions. Where do you shop when you touch down here in town? I don't come home as much as I would like to. I get sad when
I talk about it. I'm even wearing a Longhorns T-shirt right now!
When I'm back home, I go to NorthPark – I could spend all day
there. I always go to BCBG, Anthropologie and the Mac store. And
How does it feel to be recognized for your style? Honestly, it's kind of weird. I'm not the girl who spends hours and hours shopping and thinking about what to wear. I go to one store, I see a dress and I buy it. For photo shoots and big events, I work with a stylist. Her name is Basia, and I've worked with her for three years, including my new album cover. She inspires me a lot. Speaking of inexpensive style, what's the last thing you bought for under $50? It was at Target, actually. I bought a V-neck tee in the maternity section for $12.99. Here's my trick: get a small maternity top, so it's a little blousy, and put a cute belt with it. Who are the best-dressed people in Hollywood? In my eyes? I would have to say Gwyneth Paltrow and Rachel Bilson. It's funny, when I see a dress, my first instinct is to wonder how Rachel Bilson would wear it. And I love Kate Hudson's style, her boho-chic thing. Do bloggers such as Perez Hilton, who chronicle your every shopping trip and red-carpet entrance, affect your style decisions? Not at all. I used to be really crazy about those Web sites,
but I don't even read them anymore. Besides, half the comments
are See Selena in The Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie Friday at 7 p.m. on Disney Channel. |

Going to Disneyland? Try GPS-based quest game Wishing Stars
Pocket Gamer - Many people think location-based features are one of the big opportunities for mobile gaming. The newly released Wishing Stars is fairly specific in terms of where you can use it however. The GPS-enabled game only works on iPhone 3G or 3GS if you're in Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California. The reason is it's a quest-based game that takes a scavenger hunt approach that has you searching around the theme park for clues. Some quests take place in specific areas of Disneyland, such as Fantasyland or Toontown. Some take place while you're waiting in line for attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean or Haunted Mansion. Other quests span the entire park. As you solve each clue, you'll earn a fragment of a wishing star, which is recorded as a GPS location you have to match to unlock. Get to the end of a quest and you'll have enough fragments to piece together an entire wishing star. Your goal is to find all 14 of the stars. Another significant fact about the game is it's not an official Disney product. It's published by The Future of Pinball, which was previously best known as the company behind pinball documentary, TILT. It's also planning a version for Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando, Florida. Wishing Stars is available now, priced $5.99 or £3.49. Hit the Buy It! button if you're planning to be in Disneyland Park, CA, any time soon. |

Lafayette
lands Disney film
The Daily
Advertiser - Production for the Walt Disney film
Secretariat will be headquartered in Lafayette, city officials
announced Wednesday. The movie will tell the story of the 1973 Triple Crown-winning racehorse and its owner, Penny Chenery. Actress Diane Lane has been cast in the film. Marcus
Brown, director of the Lafayette Entertainment Initiative, said
the offices and soundstage for film production will be based About two weeks of filming will take place in Kentucky, with the rest in Acadiana, Brown said. Some scenes will be shot at the former Evangeline Downs racetrack near Carencro. "People
should see a lot of activity around here for this," Brown said,
adding that the principal photography for the movie will start Since
launching the LEI about two years ago, several smaller
production companies have established offices in Lafayette, and
some smaller-budget movies have been shot in the area. But
Lafayette City-Parish President Joey Durel said landing such a
major project "This has been the dream of the entertainment initiative from day one," Durel said. "This is the one that's going to really put us on the map. Everybody's going to want to see Secretariat. That's really going to be an attractive movie." Brown said Disney officials were attracted by both the state's tax credit program for films, as well as the local resources available for filming. Durel said the variety of landscapes in the area also contributed to the decision. "When they came down here to look at it, one of the things they pointed out is that elsewhere in the state, they could see in five minutes what they had to offer," Durel said. "We can give them so many looks. This is what it's all been about." |

Disney Dream Begins to Take Shape Disney
News - Today, Disney Cruise Line celebrated the
keel laying of the Disney Dream, the first of two newly-designed
ships destined to expand family cruise options to more people in
more places around the world.
“Since our inception, families have come to know and love Disney Cruise Line, and they are looking for additional ways to enjoy all that we have to offer,” Disney Cruise Line President Karl Holz said during the ceremony at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. “Our fleet expansion will allow us to satisfy demand on both the East and West coasts of the United States while also giving us the flexibility to explore additional global destinations for our Guests.”
The keel laying ceremony is the first time the Disney Dream will begin to take shape after many years of design work. In the maritime industry, the ceremony marks a momentous occasion when the first block – or section – of the ship is lowered into the building dock and a coin is placed under the keel for good fortune.
Doing the honors of placing the coin was Captain Tom Forberg. With a distinguished maritime career aboard Disney Cruise Line, Forberg was the first crew member hired and the captain who launched the Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder. Recently, Forberg was named as the future Master of the Disney Dream.
Designing the Disney Dream The Disney Dream is scheduled to join the current fleet in 2011, followed by Disney’s second new ship, the Disney Fantasy in 2012. Together the two new ocean liners will more than double the capacity of Disney Cruise Line, each having 1,250 staterooms and a tonnage of 128,000.
Bringing together innovation in superb shipbuilding and creativity in imaginative storytelling, Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney Imagineering, along with the Meyer Werft shipyard have created a truly distinctive design. Like the existing ships, these ocean liners were designed to deliver a unique vacation that every member of the family believes was created just for them. Design details will be revealed later this fall.
Synonymous with its name, the Disney Dream will evoke the unique heritage of the company’s ideals in creating enchanting places and stories where families’ vacation dreams come true.
Homeports Both new ocean liners will call Port Canaveral, Fla., their home, where expansion efforts are underway to accommodate the larger ships and additional guests. In addition to an extension of the dock and enlargements to the one-of-a-kind Disney terminal building, a new multi-level parking structure will be built, complementing the design and storytelling elements of the ships. The new enhancements will provide guests an even more seamless transition from land to sea during their vacation experience.
Disney Cruise Line also recently announced that the Disney Wonder will operate from the Port of Los Angeles starting in 2011.
In addition to the new ships, Disney Cruise Line continues to expand itineraries, with plans to once again sail the Mediterranean region aboard the Disney Magic during the summer of 2010. In addition to the popular ports in Spain, Italy and France, the ship will visit Tunis, in Northern Africa, the island nation of Malta and Corsica. Disney Magic will also visit the historic cities of Northern Europe for the first time calling on Warnemunde, Germany, the gateway to Berlin and St. Petersburg, Russia. Enchanting Scandinavian ports like Oslo, Copenhagen and Stockholm, will also be a first for Disney. Holz noted that the company will begin to announce some
itineraries for 2011 in September during the D23
EXPO, the ultimate fan experience where the entire
world of Disney will come together under one roof at the Anaheim
Convention Center in California. |

'Rocky Top'
song owners sue A&E network AP - The owners to the rights of the bluegrass standard "Rocky Top" are suing the television network A&E over the use of the tune in a crime documentary. The lawsuit claims the network used the tune in a 12-second clip, even after the song owners said A&E could not use it. The lawsuit is seeking financial compensation. Felice and Boudleoux Bryant penned the song in 1967 and the couple's children own the rights under the corporate name House of Bryant. A&E's attorney Robb Harvey would not discuss the case with The Tennessean newspaper and an attorney for House of Bryant did not return calls for comment. The A&E show, called "City Confidential," highlighted an attempted contract killing in Knoxville in 1994. The episode first aired in 2004. A&E Television Networks is a joint venture of Hearst Corp., The Walt Disney Co. and General Electric Co.'s NBC Universal. |

On-screen Magic ... without a Wand Disney Insider - Warlocks, witches, and wizards don't actually exist, but that hasn't stopped Hollywood from inventing some of the most memorable characters in film and television history. Ever wonder how all the magic looks so convincing on screen? Live-action enchantment comes to life via those otherworldly wonders known as special effects. So when Disney Channel premieres "Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie" on August 28, take notice of the extraordinary illusions surrounding Alex, Justin, and Max as they vacation at a Caribbean resort. Visual effects wizard Daniel Schmit and his team conjured up some pretty incredible movie magic for the family comedy. Dan, owner of the visual effects company Engine Room, describes the process. "It really starts during pre-production when we receive the script. First we break everything down into individual shots by creating storyboards or 3-D animated mock-ups of how each scene will look. There are approximately 360 effects shots in 'Wizards' -- each with its own little story about what needs to happen in that shot. After director and Studio approvals, the real work begins." Although visual effects are scattered throughout the movie, Dan points out that three key sequences are entirely computer-generated. The first features Alex and Harper commandeering the Russo's restaurant dining car for a roller-coaster-style joyride through New York City's subway system. "Before filming on location in Puerto Rico, we produced storyboards and animated mock-ups, built the subway car sets, and rode the Toronto subway system to shoot real tunnel backgrounds and subway cars. It had the perfect look we needed for the movie." Footage was carefully filmed to match each pre-planned shot and near-miss collisions with oncoming trains were actually virtual models designed in 3-D computer-graphics programs. When Alex and Justin are faced with crossing a giant chasm in another all-CG scene, they "hopscotch" from one side to the other by levitating giant stones -- not an easy effects feat. Dan talks about how they approached the challenge. "This sequence was extremely ambitious. Since there were no actual locations suitable for us to use as a guideline, we created it from scratch with visual effects. Director Lev Spiro suggested we use a golf course as our 'template,' so we covered the fairway with 300 tennis balls for tracking markers. Back at our Hollywood studios, we were able to create a 300-foot chasm with a river flowing at the bottom, waterfalls at the end, and mountains in the distance." Dan's description may sound simple, but the work that went into rendering these sequences is pretty astounding. Approximately 30 of the best 2-D compositors, 3-D model makers, and matte background painters from around the world utilized various effects techniques to weave every element together seamlessly – in this case, the chasm itself, foliage, floating stones, river, and stock footage. "Those composites are easily 25-30 layers deep. It's completely photo-realistic and looks amazing ... and to think it all started on a golf course in San Juan!" he laughs. The last major effects scene is Alex and Justin's wizard power battle, which occurs in a fantasy-based realm. "This was shot on one of the plateaus surrounding an old San Juan fort ... it was absolutely beautiful. We created all of the scene's supporting visual effects because Alex and Justin could only use air, earth, fire, or water to battle each other for the power ball. There's a firewall, water tornado, particle swirls, and other surprise effects throughout. Plus it has a really great ending." Some of the film's other effects include a parrot-to-human morph, force fields, falling boulders, and a tornado that suddenly whisks Max into another dimension. "Staying on track is important when you're working on 300-plus shots at the same time. It takes a lot to manage resources efficiently, get everything done, and reach technical delivery requirements. These event movies are great projects because there's such variety – they really made it fun," Dan adds. What was Dan's favorite scene? "I'd have to say the stone levitation. It's dramatically powerful because it focuses on the relationship between Alex and Justin ... besides having great visual effects. There's a lot of heart in this movie and I'm proud that we worked on it. I think the film's going to be well-received by fans. Lev did a great job directing and, of course, the actors all know their characters so well." Watch "Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie" Friday, August 28 at 8pm/7c to see all the magical results ... only on Disney Channel! |

Nothing Mickey Mouse about new Disney resort going up next to
Hawaii's Ko Olina Golf Club World Golf - Just across from the J.W. Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa and Ko Olina Golf Club on west side of Oahu there’s a huge construction project underway. Apparently, not everyone got the word that tourism has been on the decline in Hawaii. Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is building its first Hawaii destination. The 21-acre oceanfront property, located at the Ko Olina Resort & Marina development, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2011. Like the Marriott, the Disney destination will overlook crystal blue lagoons and white sand beaches. The property, which is scheduled to include 350 hotel rooms and 480 Disney Vacation Club timeshare villas, is the first to not be affiliated with a theme park, which makes sense. It’s hard to improve on Hawaii, isn’t it? Officials at Ko Olina Golf Club and the J.W. Marriott are welcoming the addition. Already, the golf club, a solid Ted Robinson design that has hosted both the LPGA Tour and Champions Tour, has a strong relationship with the Marriott, which offers golf packages. Disney figures to do the same. Plans at the Disney resort call for an expansive pool and water play area, an 18,000 square-foot spa, a wedding lawn, an 8,000 square-foot convention center, a children’s club and two restaurants – one of which will provide a stunning view of the ocean. The water park area will include tubes and body slides that will weave through volcanic rockwork and engage an iconic caldera volcano. Word is there might even a replica of the “Black Pearl” parked outside. That would be the ship from the Disney movie Pirates of the Caribbean, by the way. The resort is also being designed to connect with the local culture of the Hawaiian Islands. The Walt Disney Imagineering team has been working with local architects and cultural experts as part of the resort’s creative design process. To nobody’s surprise, Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann said he is looking forward to the opening of the project in 2011. “Disney leaders have met with Hawaiian cultural experts to gain an understanding and appreciation of our host culture,” Hannemann said. “The end result will be a resort that local residents will be proud to have on our island, and it will be a family attraction that our residents and visitors will find enjoyable and meaningful.” |

5 Tips for a
PERFECT Day at Disneyland Examiner - If you are planning to go to Disneyland this week, you need these tips. The Disneyland Resort is busy, but not packed. That's right, you won't see 2 hour line at any attraction. In fact, the Daily Disneyland Examiner waited ONLY 20 minutes getting into the submarine ride -- and it is August! So what exactly are you waiting for? Why haven't you visited Disneyland this month? Do you need an invite from Mickey Mouse? Silliness aside, it is the best time for visiting the Disneyland Resort - the lines are light, the summer evenings are beautiful and well, the attractions are super fun! Here are some tips to make the day even BETTER! 1. Shut off your electronic toys. Like all the way off. Putting them on vibrate isn't the off position. I noticed so many families standing in line on their vacation all looking at their cells, iPods and even a few PDA's. I hate to be the one who asks, but is this really a vacation? Take time to visit with each other in the lines (short as they maybe) and experience Disneyland Together. You can always check your electronic life back at the hotel. 2. Be adventurous and ask for the front seat on one attraction. That's right, you want the front row one time to experience the attraction differently. By simply asking the Cast Member, you will be happily accommodated especially with the lighter crowd right now. Your party will LOVE this opportunity. 3. Get yourself a piece of Disney for the day. Now is the time to buy a hat, balloon or light stick that you can enjoy all day and play with it. This advice goes for the adults too. If you just stand in line and wait for the attraction you are missing half the fun - get involved by having something fun to play with. The Daily Disneyland Expert got this cute ghost charm (Halloween stuff is at the Disneyland Resort) and felt like a kid all night! 4. Take time for a break during the day and make yourself relax at Disneyland. It could be ten minutes under the tree, a quick stop for a soda or just having lunch, but take the time. There is plenty of time to get on the attractions and with the lower attendance, you can manage to enjoy all the rides you want to play on! 5. Watch a Disneyland Show. It doesn't matter if it is the fireworks, a parade or the street performers, take a minute to watch and be entertained. Disneyland is the perfect place to create memories and that whole idea of 'memory making' begins with you and how you decide the day will be once your family hits the park. Make it memorable! |

horse chosen for Disney film Grand Forks Herald - Cyclone Larry has always lived his life on the fast track. Now the Casselton thoroughbred can hoof it to Hollywood. Larry, a 3-year-old race horse owned by Heather Benson, the general manager of Fargo’s North Dakota Horse Park, recently was chosen in an online equine casting call for the Disney film “Secretariat.” Within a week after Benson sent in Larry’s photos and biography, a star was born. “He’s got the look, so he’s got the part,” Benson said. “They were looking for a big, bright chestnut with a good personality.” Everything in stride Larry’s taken everything in stride. Benson, on the other hand, felt like she was in the winner’s circle when she got the news. “I was out of control, I was so happy,” Benson said. “It was like having a kid in the movie.” Secretariat is one of the greatest race horses of modern time. He won horse racing’s Triple Crown in 1973, setting track records at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, and a world record at the Belmont Stakes. He even ended up on the cover of Time magazine. Larry was born in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Benson said. She bought him in January. For the movie, she had to sell him to Disney. However, as part of the agreement, she gets him back at the end of filming. Hollywood horse expert Rusty Hendrickson is in charge of the training. Larry will travel to Kentucky sometime in the next week or two, Benson said. There, he’ll join at least three to four other horses that will help play Secretariat. For the next two months, they’ll be taught various cues and tricks needed for the movie role. Filming should begin at the end of the year, Benson said. Larry doesn’t have Secretariat’s markings, but that’s not a worry, he’ll have his own makeup artist, she said. Movie-star looks Benson says photos of Larry as a teen show him as an awkward, gawky-looking horse, with little hint of movie-star looks. But, he’s filled out since. Secretariat was a big, muscular horse, at 16.2 hands high and 1,200 pounds. A hand is a standard unit of measurement that equals 4 inches and often is used to describe the height of horses. Larry is also 16.2 hands high, though his penchant for the feedbag puts him at 1,300 pounds, Benson said. “He’s a small-town country boy,” Benson said. “He knows how
to train hard and eat well. He would eat everything in this
barn, And is she afraid Larry will lose his sunny disposition in a place where everyone is saddled with high expectations? Nay, Benson said. “He just knows that everyone likes him right now,” she said. Still, “he’s very movie-star-like. He’s learning to adjust to life in the limelight.” For example, Larry won’t just eat an apple. He’ll drool on it. But he won’t chomp until it is cut up for him. And when it’s time to clean up, crank up the hot-water heater, Larry won’t go for a cold shower. “He won’t stand for it,” Benson said. Larry also has his own Facebook page. It lists his new home as Hollywood, Calif., and his birth date as March 29, 2006. Personal interests are hay, oats and running fast. There is no mention of his marital status or whether there’s a special filly in his life. |

Paisley, Underwood return as hosts of CMA Awards AP - Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood will return as co-hosts of the Country Music Association Awards in Nashville this fall. The CMA said Tuesday that both singers possess the humor and timing needed to host the three-hour show, which airs live on ABC Nov. 11. The pair, two of country's most popular young stars, hosted for the first time last year. "We didn't know what to expect the first time. We had no idea," Underwood said. "Things are different from year to year, but the overall layout -- we've got it down." The host slot has been something of a revolving door since the affable Vince Gill ended a 12-year run in 2003. Brooks & Dunn hosted from 2004-2006, and in 2007 the CMA experimented with no host as multiple artists presided over different segments. Seated beside each other, Paisley and Underwood said they wrapped up last year's show hoping to be invited back. "We trust our instincts a little more now," Paisley said. "When they ask you to host and you've never done it before, it could be really bad. We all know of situations in various awards shows where that hosting thing didn't work very well. "We've all sat through crickets," Underwood added. "Someone said something that was supposed to be a joke, and it's like, 'What are they talking about?'" Last year, both singers performed during the broadcast, and both accepted major awards during the program: Paisley won male vocalist of the year and Underwood won female vocalist of the year. "I think being the host made the award and performing part easier," said Underwood, who has five CMA awards, including three consecutive wins as female vocalist. "If your award -- the one you really want to win -- is at the end of the show, you're going to be sitting there for two and a half hours thinking about that award. We had so much other stuff to do." Paisley, who has 11 CMA awards, thinks he and Underwood did a good job last year -- no jokes that bombed, no bloopers and no wardrobe malfunctions. And knowing what to expect the second time around can only help. "I think we can get away with some more stuff," Paisley said. But in the end, Paisley said he and Underwood they complement each other well. "You can have her out there with all this class and dignity and bring someone on the way they deserve," he said. "And then they can have somebody like me out there where that unfortunate performer gets gypped." ABC is owned by The Walt Disney Co. |

'Up' cleared for
big overseas landing THR - "Up" soon should be moving up in the world. Pixar's latest film release already has overperformed in the U.S. and Canada, proving wrong predictions its star-free voice cast and adult-oriented tone would hamper appeal among family moviegoers. As it turned out, Ed Asner and newcomer Jordan Nagai were fine for the lead roles as "Up" registered upward of $288 million domestically. In fact, "Up" stands as the second-highest-grossing domestic release by Disney and Pixar after 2003's "Finding Nemo," which brought in $340 million. Now, the film about a globe-trotting house hoisted by balloons finally is finding momentum in a growing number of foreign territories. So the question looms: Will the international campaign for "Up" also top other Pixar pics from the past six years, including 2004's "The Incredibles," 2006's "Cars," 2007's "Ratatouille"? Like most Disney/Pixar releases, "Up" was slotted to open during a span of several months in different territories. In fact, that's often the norm for family films of all sorts -- the trend toward simultaneous global releasing notwithstanding -- as school schedules and local holidays vary worldwide. "The movie was set up just right," Disney film group president Mark Zoradi said. "In a summer of mega-sequels, the right strategy with a new movie like this was to be very strategic and very targeted." Rhapsodic reviews after the pic's world premiere at Cannes didn't hurt either. "It was the first-ever 3D film there," Zoradi noted in a phone interview from Australia, where he's tubthumping for exhibitors a Disney slate featuring the Sept. 3 bow of "Up." "The movie started with a great story and delivered on emotion and heart," he said. "The filmmakers came through with a movie that works on those levels, and therefore it can travel around the world." So far, "Up" sits at $142 million and counting internationally. Eventually, it should fetch upward of $400 million abroad as Pixar pics tend to overperform internationally; even $206 million domestic grosser "Ratatouille" whipped up $415 million overseas. The international appetite for animated features would seem high at the moment judging from the global appetite for Fox's summer opener "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs." The 3D threequel has more than tripled its domestic tally with a stunning $616 million in foreign lucre. As a well-known franchise opening in July, "Ice Age" was able to stage a day-and-date global opening. "The majority of kids around the world were on holiday," Fox international co-topper Tomas Jegeus said. "That very broad, dysfunctional-family sort of comedy really plays." More emotionally nuanced than the Fox pic, "Up" also is set to overachieve abroad, Disney international distribution boss Anthony Marcoly predicted. "This has proven correct in our results thus far," he said. "On a local-currency basis, 'Up' has outgrossed or is tracking to beat the previous two Pixar releases in every market of the world." Although "Up" began its international run May 29, there are many offshore markets yet to play the pic. From September through December, "Up" will open in at least 15 territories including such key markets as the U.K., Australia, Germany, Italy and Scandinavia, with animation hot spot Japan getting the film Dec. 5. Day-and-date releases enjoy boosted media efficiencies, with foreign marketing able to draught off of the earliest domestic buzz. But protracted overseas rollouts such as with "Up" allow marketing execs to "properly customize and localize our marketing and publicity campaigns," Marcoly said. Combined with the challenge of finding school holidays in various markets, "it can take as long as seven to eight months" to travel the globe with a family film like "Up," he said. Next up for "Up"? The little laugher that could will drift into Australia and Brazil next week. |

On the site they were able to solve problems to load the shuttle, complete scavenger hunts and control Buzz's movements. Disney says, "Buzz is now the longest serving "astronaut" in space ever, and will treated as a hero upon his return." The Magic Kingdom will host a ticker tape parade in his honor on October 2nd. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin will be there for a book signing, as well as some of the astronauts who flew with Buzz Lightyear on the Discovery. Disney and NASA will hold a contest for students to design a Buzz Lightyear Mission Patch that will be used on a future shuttle mission. |

Snow White at Disneyland wins lottery OCRegister
- Natalie Marston’s trips to the wishing well paid off this
weekend. The Rancho Cucamonga resident was working as Snow White at Disneyland when she bought a lottery ticket on a whim in February. That ticket just made Marston a millionaire. Marston, 22, won the $5.2 million jackpot on the “Make Me a Millionaire” show by the California Lottery on Saturday. The show airs 7:30 p.m. Saturdays on KCAL-9. “I know I played Snow White, but I feel more like Cinderella,” Marston said in a prepared statement. In a phone interview, Marston said she knew that she was guaranteed $2,000 when she scratched her lottery ticket to find that she qualified to go on the 30-minute lottery T.V. show. But the initial prize wasn’t a factor in her decision to quit her Disneyland job about four months ago. Instead, Marston wanted to pursue acting jobs full-time. “It was just something I did to have an income between my acting jobs,” Marston said. “I had a great run, a lot of fun and I got to meet great people and adorable kids.”
“To have this happen was definitely more than I would have ever expected,” Marston said. “I still don’t think I believe it to this day.” While she no longer has to whistle while she works, Marston said she plans to keep seeking acting jobs. “This doesn’t change anything with my acting carer. That’s still my passion and love. This just makes me able to not be financially burdened or stressed,” Marston said. She and her fiance, John, hope to use the money to buy a house and prepare for the future. The money will enable them to go on some trips and hold their September 2010 wedding at an outdoors, romantic location that they wouldn’t have been able to afford otherwise. “We want to be smart with the money and do the right thing so it does last for years to come,” Marston said. “We’ll obtain our goals a lot sooner than we would have been able to.” |

Village Hopes for a Disney Windfall The Wall Street Journal - For residents of one of the villages slated to be razed for the construction of a Walt Disney Co. theme park here, a visit by city officials on Aug. 3 raised hopes that a long-anticipated windfall for using their land was finally in sight. But some of Zhaohang village's 4,000 people weren't included in what residents said was enrollment in an insurance and annuity program. Fearing they would be left out of an opportunity for compensation, more than 100 villagers launched two days of protests that culminated with the death on Aug. 5, apparently by a stroke, of a woman who had led them. The response raised the prospect of more tension if construction of the theme park gets the green light from Beijing. Negotiations between Disney and the municipal government to build a theme park in Shanghai have dragged on for more than a decade, enough time for Disney to build, operate and eventually agree to expand a park in nearby Hong Kong. A Shanghai park was officially proposed this year in a feasibility report to China's central government, according to people familiar with the situation. The project, costing more than $3 billion, a person familiar with it said, would be one of China's largest foreign investments and provide the Burbank, Calif., entertainment giant an important platform in China. Disney has announced few specifics about its plan. "No deal has been agreed to, no project has been approved," a Hong Kong-based spokeswoman said this month. Other Disney officials have said more. Chief Financial Officer Thomas O. Staggs referred to a framework agreement for a park submitted to Beijing in a conference in June, saying, "We're waiting to see whether that gets approved and whether we can go forward, and we don't know as yet if and when that will come." The spokeswoman said other issues should be raised with Shanghai authorities. Shanghai officials declined to offer an update. Jin Weilun, a county-level vice director for administration, said officials canvassed local residents in early August as part of a routine survey to improve government databases, "but this work has nothing to do with any specific project." He suggested residents may have jumped to conclusions about a Disney park. Under terms outlined this year, according to the person familiar with the plans, Shanghai would control 57% of the project through municipal government-owned companies. It would also be responsible for delivering the land in developable condition. Land-use matters have been a sticking point for many large projects in China. A husband and wife in Chongqing famously fought a developer's eviction efforts in 2007, even as building went on around them and left their house propped up on a narrow rise of land. Shanghai's government has sought to avoid such situations in the cluster of leafy canal villages near the city's international airport that would be the location of Shanghai Disneyland. The government has, for instance, limited development there for several years, keeping population numbers low. On Aug. 3, the theme park suddenly seemed more than a fantasy. In one of the villages, Zhaohang, government officials visited local wheat farmers and others to prepare what residents said was described as an insurance and annuity plan due to kick in if the Disney project proceeds. That action was regarded by many as a sign development would soon begin, and they happily handed over their documents to facilitate compensation. One of them, Zhao Jingfang said, "We can't welcome it more." Nearby, an elderly woman wearing a yellow Minnie Mouse T-shirt beamed as neighbors cleaning beans mused about their impending payday. It also became apparent that not everyone in the village would be eligible for the benefits. Confused and angry, some residents marched through heavy rain to the town seat to complain. Spearheading the effort was a gregarious insurance saleswoman, Li Zhengfang, 57 years old. The following day, they boarded a bus for an hourlong ride to Shanghai City Hall to lodge a formal complaint. There, Ms. Li jostled with police trying to prevent their protest. Back in the village later that day, Aug. 5, inside the offices of Zhaohang's top official, Communist Party Secretary Huang Wei, an exhausted Ms. Li grew agitated. Within a few hours, Ms. Li was dead of what police say was an apparent brain hemorrhage. The Shanghai government said there was nothing it could have done to prevent her death. |

New 'After-Life' board game features Disney's Haunted Mansions
The game, cleverly subtitled "Welcome to the After-Life," debuted at Once Upon a Toy on Friday. How do you play? Well, according to our friends at Disney, you travel through the After-Life, encountering trials and tribulations. You may encounter a hitch-hiking ghost (or three) while you try to accumulate screams. You might even run into two mortals -- a very frightened Groundskeeper and his even more frightened dog. If you are the spirit to arrive at the Final Resting Place with the most accumulated screams, you become the 1,000the happy haunt at Master Gracey's mansion. * The game board centers on extending the stories of the four stretch paintings found within the Haunted Mansion. * Elements from inside and outside the mansions are tucked in with the game board. Look for the musical intstruments, the "Tomb Sweet Tomb" sign and the library busts, among others. * The spinner is inspired by Mada Leota's table, complete with tarot cards, a melted candle and a raven ... who's watching you. * The game also includes new elements not found in the parks' mansions ... but they would not be out of place at the Gracy estate. * Of course, there are hidden Mickeys to be found. |

Disney taking a
page from Comic-Con LATimes - Next month's D23 Expo in Anaheim is modeling itself on the successful pop-culture festival in hopes of boosting Disney's film and TV projects and its amusement parks. Will the success formula of Comic-Con International work for a Mickey Mouse operation? The leadership at Walt Disney Co. hopes so as it moves forward with the D23 Expo, a four-day event next month in Anaheim that will celebrate -- and sell -- all things Disney with celebrity appearances and slick sneak previews of upcoming films, television shows and theme park attractions. The approach is pure Comic-Con, the pop-culture festival that has become one of Hollywood's most potent megaphones by providing hard-core fans with insider-access experiences that turn many of them into Internet apostles for movies, television shows and other projects. Last month, more than 126,000 people attended Comic-Con in San Diego, and films such as "District 9" and "Avatar" enjoyed a strong surge in public awareness after putting stars and filmmakers in the same room as fans hard-wired into Twitter, YouTube and Facebook. Disney was a key player at Comic-Con with Johnny Depp and director Tim Burton appearing before a cheering crowd to promote their 2010 release "Alice in Wonderland," but now the company is looking to separate itself by throwing its own pop-culture party in Disneyland's shadow. Robert Iger, Disney's president and chief executive, said that the company has, more than any other entertainment outlet, enjoyed decades of support from "very passionate, very ardent" über-fans, but now, in this digital age, that constituency has greater expectations as well as newfound tastemaker power. "We will be much better served by serving them better," Iger said. "We live in a world where digital communication enables people to express their opinions about things to a much broader set of people. We call it the combustion of digital world of mouth . . . their ability to communicate with others is unlike anything we've seen at any time before." It's a good time for Disney to reach out to fans -- the recession has been bruising, even for a company with a market cap of $49.8 billion. Disney's profits declined in the most recent quarter with tough times for television advertising, DVD sales and domestic theme park attendance. The film studio posted its first operating loss since 2005, despite the success of Pixar's "Up." Disney's ABC has also struggled, with declines in summer prime-time viewership landing the network in fourth place. Still, company leaders are sunny about the potential of D23, which is a chance to preach to their most devoted choir, the fans who are true believers in the Disney marketing message, that the company creates touchstones, not just entertainment properties. The event at the venerable Anaheim Convention Center will be a chance for Disney to promote feature films such as Burton's "Alice," "The Princess and the Frog" and "A Christmas Carol" but also will serve as a big tent for Disney's varied empire. Attendees will not only be offered the chance to buy new teen-pop CDs and vintage animation cels, for example, they also will be pitched travel packages for the Disney Cruise Line. ABC Entertainment Group President Steve McPherson and stars Patricia Heaton, Kelsey Grammer and Ed O'Neill will be part of a major presence for the network, which has a screening room and an exhibit dedicated to "Lost." The expo's schedule aspires to be all things to all Disney fans. The Disney Channel will bring the cast of "Wizards of Waverly Place," screen an upcoming episode and stage a musical performance. Pixar fans will be more interested in the final day's slate of events: a presentation by animation guru John Lasseter, a special "Toy Story 3" preview and a digital 3-D screening of the first two "Toy Story" films. The expo will also try to stir interest in the reworking of California Adventure, the struggling Anaheim venture that is undergoing a $1 billion reworking and will, in 2012, have a new 12-acre attraction based on Pixar's "Cars." It may also be used to announce the major upgrade to "Star Tours," the somewhat creaky Disneyland ride based on "Star Wars." The D23 Expo (the name alludes to 1923, when founder Walt Disney arrived in Hollywood) will begin Sept. 10 with an Iger speech about the future of the company. Iger may take the opportunity to share a favorite anecdote about a fan who stood up at a Disney shareholders meeting in New Mexico and said the company should give its most passionate fans more respect and special access. "Some of these fans show up at those meetings," Iger said, "because, other than going to our parks, it's been the only way they can feel truly connected." D23's corporate heritage sets it apart from Comic-Con, which started in 1970 as a scruffy merchant show in a hotel basement. Now bursting at the seams, it has become a world's fair for fanboys. Conventions in New York and Chicago are cutting into the San Diego event's supremacy as far as Hollywood programming, and it's reasonable to wonder if Disney will also scale back its participation if it finds success in Anaheim. The D23 Expo is $35 a day (or less with multi-day passes) -- for programming that runs from 10 a.m. past 11 p.m. Disney is not the first corporate entertainment power to create a major dedicated expo aimed at giving fans an insider experience. About 75,000 people attended Star Wars Celebration in 1999 in Denver, organized by LucasFilm, and there have been six editions of the event since, including a 2006 staging at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Lucasfilm is entertaining civic sweetheart deals now for a 2010 encore. Like "Star Wars," Disney has a world-class array of toys and collectibles, and there will be 20,000 square feet at the expo devoted to merchandise new and old. A Disney Treasures exhibit will feature more than 100 rare items, among them artifacts such as Annette Funicello's sweater from "The Mickey Mouse Club" and Fess Parker's coonskin cap from "Davy Crockett." Iger said he was stunned during a warehouse tour of the pieces, especially a "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" prop of the Nautilus that he called "a jewel." Iger said some components of D23 may eventually travel beyond Anaheim -- perhaps those vintage items, considering the success of the touring "Harry Potter" exhibit -- but overall the expo is viewed as an annual Anaheim tradition in the making. The D23 brand goes beyond the expo. It's a new $75-a-year paid-membership fan club that launched in March to provide "a high-end, elite-level access" for intense Disney fans, according to Steven Clark, head of the initiative. It includes a glossy quarterly magazine and members-only special events and advance screenings. The passion Disney is hoping to tap into is the same one that powers hundreds of blogs that obsess over Disney lore, theme park doings and daily corporate life of the company employing more than 150,000. The D23 community got off to a slow start, according to Al Lutz, editor of the independent Disney blog MiceAge, but the expo seems to mark a turning point. "To their credit, they have really come to the ballpark," he said. "They've been responsive and listening to the fan community." |

Disney’s properties continue to flex their monetary muscle The Spokesman Review - Not even Mickey Mouse is immune to this recession. But he’ll make it through all right. Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS) is a strong international performer in most economic climates. The star performer in its third quarter was the media networks division. ESPN, ABC and the Disney Channel collectively held their ground year over year, losing just 2 percent of their sales. With the broadcasting industry fighting online piracy, reticent advertisers and worries that TiVo boxes and other DVRs will kill traditional TV advertising, that performance is an impressive show of Mouse muscle. All told, revenue fell 7 percent from 2008 levels to $8.6 billion, and net income was down 23 percent. Still, that’s $954 million of earnings and $881 million in free cash flow, straight into the bank. Disney remains a true cash machine, even at the worst of times. Disney’s solid brands and near-constant stream of fresh, high-quality entertainment content drives this strength. The upcoming slate of Disney movies inspires confidence. “The Princess and the Frog” looks like a return to Disney’s Brothers Grimm-style storytelling roots. The star-studded live-action remake of “Alice in Wonderland” at the hands of real-life Mad Hatter Tim Burton ought to draw a crowd. And then there’s the third installment of “Toy Story” next year. ’Nuff said. Disney appears to be doing all the right things to stay healthy. |

Disney’s ‘A Christmas Carol’ Train Tour to stop at Union Station Kansas City Star - Local movie fans can get a jump on the holiday season with a visit Tuesday to Union Station for Disney’s “A Christmas Carol” Train Tour. The free interactive train attraction, which is crisscrossing the country with its own colorfully painted diesel engine and cars, features a clip from the 3-D “A Christmas Carol” to be released Nov. 6, as well as Charles Dickens memorabilia and displays about the creation of the beloved tale. “Audiences are always looking for value, something compelling that will stand out on its own, something they can’t see any place else,” said Bob Gault, Disney’s vice president for motion picture special events. “We’re bringing that to town.” The train tour is part of the marketing drive behind the latest screen incarnation of Dickens’ ever-popular tale about the miserly Scrooge and his visitation by three Christmas spirits (four, if you count the ghost of dead partner Jacob Marley). This version was directed by Oscar winner Robert Zemeckis (“Forrest Gump”) in the same animated 3-D style as his hit “The Polar Express.” It stars funnyman Jim Carrey not only as Ebenezer Scrooge but also as the yuletide ghosts. Other actors who performed their roles for the camera and were then transformed into animated characters include Gary Oldman, Robin Wright Penn, Colin Firth, Cary Elwes and Bob Hoskins. The train will be parked on the rails beneath the station, with visitors moving through the cars to view the exhibits, many of which employ touch-screen technology. There’s a scale model of London’s Big Ben under construction and a glass case containing Dickens’ personal possessions. One exhibit shows how actors in bodysuits and headgear performed their roles on a soundstage surrounded by 120 high-def cameras that recorded them from every possible angle. “You pretty much do it at your own pace,” Gault said. “You can speed through in 10 minutes or take an hour to really listen to all the audio explaining what you’re seeing.” A highlight is an inflatable 100-seat movie theater that will be erected near the tracks. Audiences will don 3-D glasses to watch scenes from the movie. “And despite any hot weather, we’ll have snow, too,” Gault said. “A little Disney magic.” The Kansas City visit represents the halfway point on the tour, which will visit 40 cities and cover 16,000 miles in 36 states. Riding the rails to get the word out is a very Disney concept, Gault said. “One of first attractions Walt put in at Disneyland was a steam-powered train,” he said. “He had a miniature train in his backyard. That was one of his passions. “Turns out Robert Zemeckis loves trains, too,” he said. “They figured prominently in the third ‘Back to the Future’ movie, not to mention ‘Polar Express.’ “And from a logistical standpoint, having the exhibits aboard the train minimizes our setup and takedown time. The train is pretty self-sufficient once it pulls into the station.” It will also give the local economy a tweak. In addition to the dozen workers who travel with the train, as many as 120 locals are hired in each city as ushers, security personnel and carolers in Victorian outfits. “It’s free,” Gault said. “You just have to show up and go through it. The exhibit opens at 9 a.m., but we suggest fans come early. The crowds have been tremendous — in L.A. and Chicago, we were averaging 10,000 a day. Sometimes there’s been a three-hour wait to get in.” The exhibit officially closes at 7 p.m., but Gault said anyone in line at that time will be admitted. For more information, visit www.christmascaroltraintour.com. |
