talented group of ladies at Disney’s California Adventure park
weekends (since 2003) at the Pacific Wharf area. The group
members represent several nationalities: Mexican, Cuban,
Argentinean, Colombian, Panamanian, Puerto Rican, Swiss,
Japanese, Honduran, Peruvian, Tongan and Anglo. The video below
was shot in a performance for media on the “Drawn to Magic
Stage” in Hollywood Pictures Backlot on January 11. If you

DisneyParks Blog - If you visit
Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa,
chances are you’ll notice Guests walking with their heads
down…admiring the floor. It’s hard not to. The new Italian
marble draws your eyes. And now that work is complete, we’re
sharing images.
The floor incorporates Disney characters
into its design. We’re told that placement of the characters was
carefully chosen, and each location has special significance to
the character’s story and personality. Here are the featured
characters and their locations:
Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald &
Pluto are shown mostly in silhouette in an intricate pattern
inside the main first-floor entrance, along with the
circular “GF” logo. The exact same pattern is repeated on
the second-floor landing opposite the Monorail Station.
Mickey & Minnie (in silhouette) are
part of a pattern outside the dining room of 1900 Park Fare.
Mickey, Minnie, Goofy & Donald are
part of a large circular pattern in the rotunda outside the
Grand Floridian Café.
Mrs. Potts & Chip (and a rose) are outside the Garden
View Tea Room.
Silhouettes of Cinderella and Prince Charming are at the
foot of the Grand Staircase.
Peter Pan and the Darling children (Wendy, John &
Michael) are shown flying in silhouette inside the lobby
entrance beneath the Grand Staircase.
Tinker Bell (in silhouette) is part of a pattern
opposite the lobby’s twin elevators on the first and second
floor.
There’s also a “Hidden Mickey” in the marble located in the
floor for you to find during your next visit.

The Big Money
- Another week, another must-read from Bloomberg News. Earlier
this month they published a great
piece on Ted Sarandos, the guy
who gets studios to sell digital streaming rights to Netflix (NFLX).
And now, late in the
day Friday, comes a piece from Andy Fixmer
and Ronald Grover’s that breaks news of Disney (DIS) fighting
hard to
get better terms on their Netflix contract. The actual
news is complicated and involves the Starz network, so I
suggest
you read the Fixmer/Grover original to fully appreciate. But
here’s what’s salient for our purposes:
Disney isn’t happy with Netflix.
Disney “is building an online video subscription
business that could start this year, according to a separate
person with
knowledge of the plans.”
For a company that owns 27 percent of Hulu, these are very
important developments. If Disney can’t come to terms with
Netflix, it has a built-in alternative: Go to Hulu. That this
hasn’t happened already continues to surprise me. (So much so
that
at some point soon this blog will make a regular feature
out of Hulu’s movie offerings.) Disney, Universal Studios, and
Fox’s
film units have left Hulu’s movie section alone, meaning
there’s a serious drought of popular films. The TV section,
meanwhile,
is well-stocked with the three companies’ TV fare.
It’s like giving birth to twins and feeding one caviar and the
other Chef
Boyardee, even though you have extra caviar to go
around.
Of course, one of the reasons the films aren’t already on
Hulu is because Hulu’s business model isn’t Netflix’s. For now
there
are no subscriptions allowed. Movies that run on Hulu
would likely need to run with ads because there isn’t the
guaranteed,
paid-in-advance revenue like when Disney sells a
film to Netflix.
To which I say: Give Hulu a trial subscription model, and do
it in the movie section. If Hulu has to become a subscription
service eventually—as I think it does—then why not try it in a
medium that people are already used to subscribing to? Netflix
has admitted that digital streaming is the future of its
business model, and Hulucination has drummed on at length about
the
brewing war between the two companies. Well, Hulu should
take the fight to them. And to make that happen it’s going to
need a war chest of movies from its parent companies.
What both gives me hope and tells me there’s not a shot in
hell of this happening is the second revalation of that article.
If Disney is truly building its own subscription service for its
own content, what exactly is Hulu for? There’s a chance that
the
subscription service Bloomberg writes about is, in fact, a Hulu
subscription service. And perhaps it’s even the kind I
outlined
above. Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO, is on Hulu’s board of directors,
so it would be hard to think that Hulu and Disney
(DIS) aren’t
at least somewhat aware of what each other is planning. But
something about the way that Bloomberg bit was
phrased—“building
an online video subscription business”—implies they’re starting
from scratch. And if Hulu’s own family
is competing with it,
there’s no way it can beat Netflix. Then Disney will be back
where it started, negotiating with Netflix …
and Netflix only.
Safety.BLR -
OSHA has cited Walt Disney World for safety violations following
the death of a monorail driver in July.
And the agency has
issued a recommendation letter concerning the death of an actor
during a stage production at the
park in August.
In early
July, a worker was killed when two monorail trains collided
while switching tracks. One train was holding while another
was
being transferred to an express loop where it would travel to
the maintenance shop. When one train traveled in reverse, it
remained on the loop and struck the other train, killing the
operator.
Walt Disney World was cited with a serious violation for not
providing a place of employment free from recognized hazards.
During the investigation, OSHA inspectors observed three
violations not related to the fatality. Two repeats were issued
for
exposing employees to fall hazards and for not providing
training for monorail employees in use of portable fire
extinguishers.
On August 8, an actor died from injuries sustained during a
Pirates of the Caribbean stage show when he hit a concrete wall
that was part of a new stage. While no OSHA citations were
proposed, the agency is recommending that employees rehearse
on
new stages before their first live performance.
DisneyParks Blog - As many of you know, we like to post details
about Disney history on our Disneyparks Twitter account. But
today, we’ve stumbled on an image worth noting on the blog. On
this day in 1990, the first of two four story dolphins were
placed atop the Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort – which is now
a Starwood property.
DisneyParks
Blog - When people work together, remarkable things can happen –
things like a giant LEGO Buzz Lightyear and Woody mural.
Guests in the Downtown Disney area at Walt Disney World were
given one 6-inch square with a color pattern printed on it to
place on the mural during the last Festival of the Masters
event. More than 1,000 squares were combined to make the
finished product and the process was videotaped. Here’s three
days of work — and creativity — in 30 seconds. Enjoy.
If you didn’t know, LEGO Imagination Centers can be found at
Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World and at The Downtown Disney
District at the Disneyland Resort.
Disney Blog - Tables in Wonderland, formerly the Disney Dining
Experience, is a program available to Florida residents and
annual passholders that gives a 20% discount on dining locations
around the resort. We used to belong, but quit because our

just added that location back along with a number of others.
New as of January 2010!
Epcot: Tokyo Dining Location Only (Not Teppan Edo)
Disney’s BoardWalk Resort: Kouzzina by Cat Cora (formerly
Spoodles)
Disney’s Wide World of Sports: ESPN Sports Cafe
DOWNTOWN DISNEY Marketplace: Fulton’s Crab House
DOWNTOWN DISNEY Pleasure Island: Portobello
DOWNTOWN DISNEY West Side: House of Blues, Wolfgang Puck Cafe
Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort: Il Mulino New York
Trattoria, Kimonos, Shula’s Steak House, Todd English’s bluezoo
If you plan on dining out at WDW sit down restaurants (keep
in mind that DAK has three counter service locations on the
plan, plus a buffet) and spending more than $550 over the course
of the year on food and drinks at those locations, then the
Tables in Wonderland card makes sense for you. For some

if you include a wine flight.

Blog - On January 15, in celebration of National Hat Day, some
of you will surely be an “ear” above the rest. Hats big and
small, quirky and sensible, fun and fancy or worn simply as a
fashion statement will be all the rage this month. Hats have
been a staple throughout the centuries, worn by notable
individuals like Abraham Lincoln as well as entertainers and
actors, performers and athletes, and even by people like you and
me.
From fedoras and straw hats to cowboy hats and your favorite
sports team cap, a hat is the perfect addition to any attire.
And here at
Disney Parks and Resorts it’s no
different. Our most notable hat, of course, dates back to the
Mickey Mouse Club ear hat, which is still the most popular,
decades later.
Here’s a fun fact: To date, more than 80
million Mickey ear hats have been sold. In 2005, more than 1
million Golden Mickey Mouse ears were sold in celebration of the
50th Anniversary of Disneyland park.
In 2010, an array of hats from Disney Theme Park Merchandise
will provide shade, disguise, holiday cheer or simply
fashion-friendly looks, including our classic Mickey Mouse ear
hats, Princess hats, Goofy hats, the famous Mad Hatter hat,
pirate themed hats, baseball hats, holiday hats, a Grumpy hat,
and even a Create-Your-Own ear hat. New this year, amongst all
the other headwear being offered, we’re adding hats with an ice
cream and a popcorn theme. Headwear Product Developer Megan
Kachur says, “We have hats to fit all ages, sizes and
personalities.”
Here are some tips on how to celebrate National Hat Day
today!
Wear a hat, of course. Change hats throughout the day or
wear your favorite hat all day long.
Buy a hat for yourself or for one of your friends or
family members.
Ask other people around you about their favorite hat.
Try to come up with a list of other notable individuals,
songs or performers whose hats have been influential or have
made a statement throughout the years.
Orlando Sentinel - Walt Disney World has
signed up a new corporate sponsor: Stanley
Works.
The New Britain, Conn.-based tool
manufacturer has signed a multiyear contract
making it the “official tool provider” at
Disney World and ensuring its brand is on
view throughout the giant resort.
Stanley’s logo now appears on
construction walls in Disney theme parks (on
signs that feature quotes from Walt Disney)
and its tools are now part of the garage
area of the Lights, Motor, Action! Stunt
Show in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Tools
will soon be added to the queue of Test
Track in Epcot, as well.
Stanley has also provided a Mac Tools
truck for use by Disney technicians, and it
will have access to resort facilities for
employee and sales meetings.
The companies declined to disclose exact
terms of the deal.
China Daily - Disney's latest collaboration with Tim Burton, the
upcoming "Alice in Wonderland," has a star-studded cast which
includes Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway. It'll also feature a
star-studded soundtrack to boot, including new music from Avril
Lavigne, The All-American Rejects and Owl City.
Avril
Lavigne's "Alice (Underground)" is the lead single from the
upcoming soundtrack. Also contributing brand new music are bands
like Shinedown, Metro Station, and All Time Low.
Tour-mates Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy and Mark Hoppus of Blink
182 collaborated on a song for the soundtrack, "In Transit,"
which they talked about with MTV News. "We did a song for 'Alice
in Wonderland,'" Wentz said. "[It] sounds nothing like Blink or
Fall Out Boy.
The soundtrack featuring popular rock acts will be dubbed
"Almost Alice" and will be one of two soundtracks releasing on
March 2nd. The second will feature the original score by Danny
Elfman. "Alice in Wonderland" hits theaters on March 5th.
AP - The legendary soap opera "All My Children" will feature two
Los Angeles politicos playing themselves to celebrate the show's
return to shooting in California.
ABC said Thursday that Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and City
Council President Eric Garcetti will both shoot episodes at the
show's new production studio near downtown Los Angeles this
month.
The show recently moved back to Los Angeles after 40 years of
shooting in New York.
ABC says Villaraigosa will shoot a scene with Susan Lucci,
who plays Erica Kane. Writers are still trying to figure out a
plot twist that puts the mayor in the fictional city of Pine
Valley, Pa.
The network says Garcetti will appear with actor David
Canary, discussing making Adam Chandler's businesses "more
environmentally friendly."
ABC - Kathy Sanders waited until her 4-year-old daughter, Emma,
was distracted with a video game Thursday. Then she made her
move.
With the excuse that she needed to collect the laundry, Sanders
sneaked upstairs and scooped up the jewelry that came with the
Disney princess dressup set Emma had gotten for Christmas. Then
she tossed it in the trash.
There have been lead scares, baby
bottle scares and Christmas toy scares. And now, Sanders and
other parents have something else to worry about: cadmium, which
the nation's product-safety chief warned this week could be
present in cheap jewelry.
The warning came after The Associated Press reported that
tests had showed high levels of cadmium in children's jewelry
imported from China. Like lead, cadmium can hinder brain
development in children and even cause cancer, according to
recent research.
It wasn't clear if Emma's new trinkets were dangerous, but
Sanders, of Corfu, N.Y., wasn't taking any chances. And she
wasn't alone.
In Chicago, Jennifer Seaver was planning to throw away all
the cheap jewelry her 7-year-old, Julia, had amassed from goodie
bags or gifts.
"I'm definitely only going to let her wear jewelry that's
gold or silver, that I buy her," said Seaver, 38, who was
shopping on Michigan Avenue. "I figure it's an easy thing to
avoid," she said of the cadmium. "Those are all cheap things
that can easily be thrown away."
Seaver said she felt relatively calm about the warning from
the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's chairman, Inez
Tenenbaum — perhaps because there had been so many scares in
recent years. "Maybe because it happens so frequently, it makes
me immune," she said.
Others were angrier.
"When is America going to learn?" asked Theresa Savoie, a
53-year-old grandmother strolling through a mall in Gretna, La.,
with her 16-month-old grandson. "Everything you buy says `Made
in China,' and every time you turn around there's another
government warning."
Many were concerned about the lack of specifics in the
government's guidance.
"I wish somebody would give me a little bit more detail as to
what's bad and what's not, so we don't overreact," said Cynthia
Dermody of Pleasantville, N.Y., a mother of two and an editor of
the popular parenting Web site cafemom.com.
The CPSC said its main concern is young children biting,
sucking on or even swallowing the trinkets. It is unclear
whether there is any substantial danger in skin exposure.
Dermody's 5-year-old daughter is no longer a baby, but she still
sucks on the stuff.
"We've got this stuff all over the place, under couch
cushions, everywhere," Dermody said. "It's pretty. It's
colorful. It looks like candy. She's 5, so she should know
better, but she does it anyway."
Also frustrating to Dermody: the lack of guidance on how to
dispose of the jewelry. The CSPC said to do it in an
environmentally proper manner, but what does that mean?
In that regard, Jennifer Taggart is ahead of most — the Los
Angeles mom and environmental attorney learned during an earlier
lead scare to dispose of most of her daughter's suspect trinkets
during monthly hazardous-waste roundups in her community.
She plans to make another hunt and do the same now that
cadmium is the problem.
"It's easier just to spend a little bit more money on
sterling silver," said Taggart, a mother of two, including a
4-year-old girl. "Or make macaroni necklaces."
It's important to put it all in perspective, advised Susan
Kane, editor of Parenting magzine. "Don't panic," she said. "In
most cases of toxin warnings, experts agree — for the typical
child, this is probably not going to be an emergency situation,
unless the child has swallowed a toy or has been mouthing or
chewing on it extensively."
Leah Ingram was following that advice.
"My kids aren't currently eating their jewelry, so it's not a
problem for me," said the mother of two from New Hope, Pa. "As
far as I'm concerned, if your children are young enough for you
to be worrying about their brain development, they're too young
to be
"Now, if it were URANIUM warnings," she added, "I might be
concerned."
AP - The Walt Disney Co. said Thursday that it named Sean Bailey
president of production for Walt Disney Studios as part of an
ongoing restructuring plan. Bailey replaces Oren Aviv, who
stepped down from the post Tuesday after 20 years with the
company.
Bailey will be in charge of live-action film development,
film production and physical production for Walt Disney Pictures
and Touchstone Pictures.
Bailey is the founder and president of production company
Ideology Inc. and counts the movies "Matchstick Men" and "Gone
Baby Gone" among his producing credits.
The company announced other personnel changes Thursday as
well.
Chuck Viane, president of distribution for the Studios, is
now responsible for worldwide sales and distribution. Christine
Cadena, a senior vice president of marketing, synergy and
franchise development, was named a senior vice president
responsible for diversity and multicultural work while Michelle
Sewell was promoted to the post of senior vice president for
global publicity at the division.
The company hinted that layoffs may be coming, too, saying in
a statement that it will "continue its reorganization of the
work force at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment."
Walt Disney Co. shares fell 83 cents to $31.03 in afternoon
trading.
Barron's -
Disney (DIS) is in talks with
John Malone’s Liberty Starz (LSTZA) on limiting the ability of
Netflix (NFLX) to offer films from the Mouse House on a
streaming basis, Bloomberg reports, citing “two people with
knowledge of the talks.”
Starz is
seeking a five-year extension of its deal to distribute Disney
films through the Starz cable channels, as well as continued
digital rights. Starz is a primary provider of streaming video
content to Netflix, under a deal which basically treats the
video rental service as simply one more pay television outlet,
like cable and satellite operators. But Disney wants limits on
the resale of its movies online.
The story says that how the digital
rights issue is settled will figure into how much Starz will pay
Disney, and whether Dreamworks Studios is included in the deal.
Without Starz, Netflix would have to reach a deal directly with
Disney.
A Disney spokeswoman confirmed to Bloomberg that the talks
are taking place today, but declined further comment. Liberty
declined comment, as did Netflix.
Meanwhile, the story also says that Disney is building its
own online video subscription business that could start this
year.
Hollywood Reporter - With Disney chairman Rich Ross on the
verge of naming a new head of production, possibly as early
as Thursday, studio insiders were betting Wednesday night
that producer Sean Bailey would get the nod.
Oren Aviv was forced to resign as president of production
Tuesday as Ross continues to put his own team into place.
The studio did not immediately name his successor, and
Bailey's name was not among those in the first wave of
speculation about possible replacements.
But by Wednesday night, Bailey was being mentioned by
several sources as Aviv's likely successor.
Bailey is a Disney-based producer who is currently producing
the remake "Tron: Legacy," which the studio has slated for
release Dec. 17.
He is also developing a "Black Hole" remake at the studio,
and he was behind "Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the
Sea," which Ross shelved for budgetary reasons in one of his
first acts as chairman.
Bailey was a producer on "Gone, Baby, Gone" and a principal
of shingle LivePlanet with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.
Disney spokespersons could not be reached for comment.
Disney News - Sure…some ran
in costumes (pirates, princesses, Tinker Bell), but most runners
who braved the record cold temperatures during the
Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend were
wrapped in layers of winter clothes. And as they ran,
they shed the clothes – 26,000 pounds worth.
When all was said and done, Disney Marathon organizers
collected about 30,000 pieces of clothing, including hats,
coats, gloves and sweaters. Now, the items are being laundered
and will be delivered to Central Florida organizations like
Harvest Time International, Salvation Army and Coalition for the
Homeless.
Thank you to everyone who participated. We’ve learned that
the four-day event earned the title of top combination race
weekend in the United States. More than 55,000 runners
registered for events that that included the Disney Half
Marathon, the Disney Pixar
Up and Away Family Fun Run
5K, Disney’s Kids Races and a Health & Fitness Expo.
AP - The Walt Disney Co. said Wednesday it would donate $100,000
to the Red Cross to help earthquake victims in Haiti.
Chief Executive Robert Iger said in a statement, "We hope this
donation will help the Red Cross to provide immediate aid and
relief to the thousands of people affected by this terrible
tragedy."
Orlando Sentinel -There’s a
different kind of Disney marathon coming Friday. Performance
artist Brian Feldman will spend 11 hours going around in circles
at the Carousel of Progress at Magic Kingdom.
The project, unofficial and not sponsored by Walt Disney
World, is tied to the 35th anniversary of the rotating theater’s
opening in Florida.
“There’s nostalgia at play here,” Feldman says. He remembers
visiting the Tomorrowland attraction as a kid and that his
father got to see it during the 1964 World’s Fair in New York.
“He was always singing the song,” Feldman says.
Which one, I asked him. “There’s a Great Big Beautiful
Tomorrow” or “The Best Time of Your Life”?
“I think he did a mashup of both of them,” he says.
Feldman, 29, says he’ll spend Friday entering and re-entering
the attraction, which features four scenes following Animatronic
families through various decades. His favorite part was always
the finale.
“I’ve always been partial to the future, so it’s always been
Act 4 – whatever the update was,” he says.
“I really enjoy it all. It’s a genuine emotion I have toward
the attraction.”
He was surprised by others liking the Carousel.
“They’re coming out of the woodwork,” he says. “Friends of
mine that we never talked about that particular ride or any ride
at all, but you mention Carousel of Progress and they go ‘Yes!
That’s my favorite!’ I had no idea.”
Feldman, who has lived in Orlando about 20 years, has
performed a variety of unusual feats over the years, including
leaping from a 12-foot ladder all day on Leap Year Day,
organizing giant pillow fights and conducting interviews in the
swan boats on Lake Eola.
“This is one of the easiest things I’ve ever done,” Feldman
says. “I’ve never done anything at the parks, and I’ve been
wanting to. It’s impossible as an Orlando artist to ignore the
attractions. You have to embrace it. Had I been doing it in the
summer, with Extra Magic Hours, this could have gone for 17
hours.”
Still, he’s not a crazy man. He could have gone with another
Magic Kingdom staple.
“At least it’s not ‘it’s a small world‘ for 11 hours,” he
laughs.
AP - ESPN is shifting the bulk of its Chase for the Sprint Cup
championship coverage to its cable network this season, taking
14 of the 17 NASCAR races it shares with partner ABC.
ESPN executive vice president John Skipper says the decision is
based on the cable network's higher ratings.
ESPN has aired six races a year the past three seasons, while
ABC has had 11 each year.

video release this week.
Sterling Knight (Sonny With A Chance) and Danielle
Campbell (Prison Break) headline

re-telling of the story of a celebrity forced to choose between
the girl and his career. Knight is Hollywood pop star
Christopher Wilde who unexpectedly meets Jessica Olson, a
down-to-earth girl visiting from the Midwest. As he shows her
around the city, the pair develop a friendship, but their bond
is tested when Christopher publicly denies knowing her.
The movie also stars Brandon Mychal Smith (Sonny With A
Chance) and Chelsea Staub (JONAS).
StarStruck
is directed by Michael Grossman (90210, Grey’s Anatomy)
and executive-produced by Doug Sloan (Princess Protection
Program, Minutemen).

Dallas Observer - You could see it in his eyes. Nick
Jonas, the youngest of the chart-topping trio of Disney-backed
siblings who call Westlake home, had just wrapped up the January
2 live performance debut of his new side project, Nick Jonas &
The Administration, and here he was, upstairs in a sectioned-off
portion of the Dallas House of Blues' Foundation Room, pacing
back and forth, looking like but a shadow of the confident
frontman he had appeared to be just minutes before, when his
headlining set came to its close.
For once, he looked his age
of 17 years old. For once, he looked nervous.
Then, a sudden rush of conviction: Before anyone else in the
room had the chance, he spoke.
"What'd you think of the show?" he asked almost sheepishly,
his eyes darting back and forth. It wasn't industry small-talk.
Nor was it the normal glad-handing that tends to take place in
these situations. Far from the normal, confident stare he so
often showcases on camera and onstage, his face was flushed with
palpable concern. Having once caught his Disney Channel show
J.O.N.A.S., I can say this much with certainty: This was
honest-to-goodness self-doubt. Nick Jonas just isn't that good
of an actor.
I answered his query: For such a young musician, he's indeed
a fine performer. His experience playing sold-out arena shows
with the Jonas Brothers no doubt helped on that front. And his
band, The Administration, which consists mostly of members of
Prince's New Power Generation, showcased a mind-boggling level
of musicianship at this first performance.
As for the music? Well, it managed to surprise. As
advertised, this wasn't the same pop schlock that he and his
older brothers have been putting out since their 2006 debut;
rather, this was rootsy, rocky fare with some pop undertones to
make it easily digestible for the young fans in attendance.
There were ballads, of course, but also a few surprisingly
brooding and driving blues- and roots-rock efforts that
showcased the young singer-songwriter's expanding tastes. All in
all, it was a far more enjoyable experience than could've been
expected.
At this, he smiled—just a
little bit—and seemed to
stand a few inches taller.
"It felt good," he said, starting to sound somewhat
satisfied.
Really, though: How could it
not feel good? For the
entirety of his hour-long show, the House of Blues was filled
with the screams and squeals and shrieks of a rabid teenage girl
fan base. Certainly, this solo debut from the youngest and
reportedly most-talented member of the Jonas Brothers reaped the
benefits of that other outfit's success, whether or not that was
Nick's aim.
"I guess there's just a sense of relief that the first one is
out the way," he said.
But what next? His soon-to-be-released debut,
Who I Am,
features a more adult sound for sure—much more John Mayer than,
say, Justin Bieber—and comes off plenty sophisticated too, what
with the caliber of the musicians he's playing alongside. So it
certainly appears to be an attempt to lure in a wider audience,
perhaps one that skews a little older, maybe leaving his old
fans at something of a loss.
It made for a weird dichotomy, visually, as Jonas ran through
his practiced motions and poses while performing on stage. Here
he was, looking to establish himself as something of a
legitimate artist along the lines of a young Bruce Springsteen
(he's been quoted as saying he's modeled The Administration
after The E Street Band), and yet, each movement—a head bob
here, a guitar riff there—resulted in giddy gasps and cries from
his fans, none of whom had heard this music before. When each
song came to its end, it remained unclear: Were these fans
screaming because they enjoyed what they were hearing or were
they screaming just because that's how they've been programmed
to react? When the excitement of hearing these songs in a live
setting rubs off, will these girls still be interested in the
merits of these songs?
"That's not something I'm afraid of," Jonas said.
That's mostly because he's confident in the music, he
explained. More than that, though, he's banking on his fans'
loyalty. Earlier in the night, on stage, he joked to his fans
that he expected all those at the show with cameras to post
videos of his performance on YouTube that night—not so much for
posterity as for education. These videos would help future
audiences familiarize themselves with his catalog. And whereas
this evening's crowd may have been at a loss when it came to
singing along to certain lyrics, future ones would have them
laid out before them.
"If they can be on board from day one with the sound, that'd
be awesome," he said after the show. "It's a little more random
this time around, I think. I don't know what to expect going
forward."
True to form though, within hours of his set's conclusion on
Saturday night, the entirety of Jonas' show was available to be
watched online, through various clips. His fans may be growing
up—this was far more a teenage audience than a tween one—but
their practices remain the same.
But it's not just Nick who is adjusting
to an older demographic. Just outside of his private room, his
brothers Kevin and Joe were milling about. Kevin, recently
married, stood arm in arm with his new bride. Meanwhile, Joe,
who is apparently going to be focusing on acting as the Jonas
Brothers go on hiatus, boasted about his younger brother's show.
"It was great," said Joe. "He's gonna go really far with this
tour and his music. We're really proud of him."
And, likely, they're all proud to be turning the page and
moving onto the next chapters of their lives. The Jonases aren't
the only ones appearing to be doing so. Their fellow teen idol
from suburban Dallas, Demi Lovato, appears to be growing up too.
She attended the recent Neon Indian-headlined show at the
Granada Theater, then followed up her experience by tweeting
that Neon Indian was her new favorite band, and that the band's
"Deadbeat Summer" track was her new favorite song. It's tough to
imagine Mickey Mouse would approve; this is a band, after all,
that has a song called "Should've Taken Acid With You."
Similarly, beyond just Nick, the Jonas' musical tastes appear to
be expanding. A recent tweet from the Jonas Brothers' joint
account called out Boston buzz band Passion Pit and its song
"The Reeling" as "Rad stuff!"
All that, one has to imagine, is encouraging. Since the
Jonases took up shop in Westlake and since Colleyville's Lovato
became a star (and with her, fellow Disney teen queen Selena
Gomez of Grand Prairie), it's been a fun guessing game to play:
What will come of all this local Disney-backed star power?
If nothing else, it seems to allow a front row seat as this
young talent crop comes to grips with its changing priorities
and perspectives.
And, as Nick showed at the House of Blues, though the final
outcome remains unclear, it at least makes for one entertaining
show.
As if we should've expected otherwise from Disney.
Orlando Sentinel - Did anyone catch
The Late, Late Show
last night on CBS? Host Craig Ferguson was reading viewer
e-mails, and the question was posed to him: “Who is your
favorite Disney princess?”
Loved his answer, which he delivered instantly in his deadpan
style: “Zac Efron.”
Craig cracked himself up, and then explained he had just
watched Zac’s movie 17 Again. He tried to redeem
himself, saying something along the lines of “I thought Zac was
just one of those Disney twits, but he has talent.” In fact, he
commented on Zac’s talent a few times.
Yet he couldn’t resist adding… “But he’s still my favorite
Disney princess.”
Craig, of course, is just as quick to make fun of himself: In
a different segment in which he cast different stars to play
late-night TV hosts, he picked Liza Minelli to play himself!
New York Times -
The Walt Disney Company continues to slash
and burn through the management ranks of its struggling motion
picture studio as it works to return the division to
profitability.
Oren R. Aviv, the studio’s top movie
production executive, resigned under pressure on Tuesday. Mr.
Aviv, who had been at Disney for 19 years, was responsible for
the development and production of live-action movies like the
forthcoming “Alice in Wonderland” and “Tron Legacy.”
In a management realignment in November,
Rich Ross, the recently installed chairman of Walt Disney
Studios, ousted a dozen managers, including top marketing and
publicity executives. Mr. Aviv was spared and given a public
vote of confidence, with Mr. Ross praising him for his “terrific
filmmaker relationships and creative expertise.”
But it is now clear that the retention of
Mr. Aviv was more about keeping a modicum of stability atop the
studio as Mr. Ross installed other changes. Mr. Ross has been
charged by Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive, with
rethinking matters such as how the company markets its movies in
the digital era and how it schedules the release of films on DVD
and on-demand services.
Another reorganization — focusing on the
home entertainment division — lies ahead. Mr. Ross is expected
to hire a new production chief shortly. A search for a new
marketing president is continuing.
“I’m proud of the hundreds of movies I’ve
helped to make and market, especially the studio’s upcoming
films,” Mr. Aviv said in a statement. “I wish Disney, Bob Iger,
Rich Ross and their new teams great success.”
Mr. Aviv, well liked in Hollywood’s
creative community, was particularly instrumental in pushing the
“Pirates of the Caribbean” and “National Treasure” franchises.
Mr. Ross said in a statement, “Oren’s
significant contributions to the Walt Disney Studios are well
documented.”
The studio, which lost money in the last
two quarters, has a busy few months ahead. Aside from “Alice,”
directed by Tim Burton, and the “Tron” reboot, coming
films include “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” and “Toy
Story 3.”

Disney News -
Since the start of our 10th
Anniversary of Disney Pin Trading celebration, I’ve had some
time to reflect upon the number of pins we’ve released in the
past 10 years. As discussed in a previous article, we are paying
tribute to some of the more popular, frequently traded or highly
desired pins via limited edition Tribute Collections. But what
about those pins that we’d prefer to sweep under the rug? Yes,
I’m talking about those pins that are affectionately known as
“error” pins. While we aren’t paying tribute to them this year
with a pin collection, they are still a part of the Disney Pin
Trading story. It’s time to give them a brief moment in the
spotlight.
I’m the first to admit that creating
quality Disney merchandise is a top priority for the Disney Pin
Team. We honestly don’t like “error” pins but have come to
accept they will happen on rare occasions. We should have
realized that “error” pins were going to be a part of the
trading experience on January 1, 2000. It was on that day we
released the now infamous “Januray” pin at Walt Disney World
Resort . That’s correct – “January” was mis-spelled and it
wasn’t caught until after the pin was released for sale. We’ve
had a few more of those mis-spellings over the years including a
more recent one released in 2009 (yes, I know how to spell
“bobsleds” but clearly my spell check device was broken that
day).
Are these “error” pins more valuable? I
really don’t discuss pin value as I believe that all Disney pins
are great (and therefore are priceless). The value of a
particular pin will be different for every person. Like many
collectible items in the world, value guidebooks exist for
Disney pins. These guidebooks aren’t created by us, rather they
are published by fans and collectors. We tend to focus on the
trading value of pins. In other words, we like giving Guests
something that will help them in making future trades with other
Guests. At no time, however, do we plan for “error” pins. They
are often a surprise to us (it’s probably my least favorite
telephone call to receive).
There are some “error” pins that aren’t
errors. They are known as pre-production pins. One step in the
development process is reviewing a pre-production or first
sample of a pin. After reviewing that pre-production pin, the
product developer, a Cast Member who leads the development of
pins, may make changes. A color fill or a feature that looked
good in the artwork may not look so hot on the actual pin. If a
change is made, the pre-production pin becomes unique. In
November 2007, we began stamping the backs of pre-production
pins with a “PP” mark to help our Guests (and us) identify those
pins.
I often use pre-production pins for
auctions at Disney pin events like the annual Disney Pin
Celebration at Epcot. We’ve offered some unique pre-production
auction lots that have given the winning bidder extremely unique
pins for her or his collection. A great example of this is the
Steamboat Willie pin pictured above. The pin on the left is the
final production pin that was released for sale. The pin on the
right was the pre-production pin featuring a different color
fill. We didn’t like the purple color so it was switched to true
black and white. The three pre-production pins featuring
Steamboat Willie in purple were sold at auction during Disney
Pin Celebration 2006.
So, if you are like me who loves catching
those continuity errors in motion pictures (I think I’ve found
almost all of them in my favorite film, Tron), keep your
eyes open. Hopefully for us, it will be a long time until you
see another error on a Disney pin.

Disney News - For Christmas this past year, I received tickets
to see “Mary Poppins” at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. As
I think I’ve shared on the
Disney Parks Blog
before, I love musicals, and I really enjoyed this one. I was
talking with some people in the office the weekend after I saw
the show and learned that two members of the cast used to work
right here at the Disneyland Resort. I did a little digging and
came across a recent interview with these talented guys in a
publication for Disneyland Resort cast members. I thought it was
an interesting story and thought you might like it, too.
Former cast members Koh Mochizuki and Jesse
Swimm are currently members of the North American Tour Cast for
the musical, “Mary Poppins,” presented by Disney and Cameron
Mackintosh. While they get to boast sharing the stage with
original Broadway stars Ashley Brown (as Mary Poppins) and Gavin
Lee (as Bert), Mochizuki and Swimm’s own performances bring that
special Disney magic they knew so well when entertaining
audiences “on stage” at the Disneyland Resort years ago. (As I
can share from first-hand experience, their performances exude
over-the-top energy in numbers like
“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and the rooftop chimney
sweeps’ “Step in Time.”)
Koh Mochizuki plays roles in the ensemble
in this third production with Disney Theatrical Productions. An
English major and graduate of California State University,
Fullerton, he spent most of his college years singing, dancing
and acting. “I kind of stumbled into the world of performing,“
Mochizuki said. “I thought I wanted to be a cool musician, like
my brother. I even took up saxophone but then joined the
‘uncool’ marching band. There, I met a fellow band member who
was also a dancer and she introduced me to theater.”
At Disneyland park, his first job was
performing in Fantasmic! as part of the original cast in 1992.
Later, in Disney’s Main Street Electrical Parade, he was a court
dancer in the Cinderella scene and eventually performed in the
Christmas Fantasy Parade, among other roles.
“I worked for Disney for seven years,”
Mochizuki said, “and I made some amazing friends that I still
keep in contact with. I get very nostalgic remembering the days
before there were two parks. My friends at Disney were like
family — we all had a chemistry that bonded us; we worked
together as a team to make our Guests smile … that was the best
part of performing at the park.” Mochizuki’s resume also
includes stints in Aida (Broadway) and Disney’s
On
the Record national tour, among other shows.
Jesse Swimm performs as a “swing,” a term
used for company members who act as understudies for multiple
roles. Swimm not only readies himself for any role where he may
be needed, but is also the understudy for the male lead, Bert.
The New York-born actor began his career at the Disneyland
Resort in 1996 when he was hired as an Entertainment host. He
went on to perform “on stage” in various roles, depicting film
personalities from The Lion King,
The Little
Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and various special
events including a national tour with his pal, Mickey Mouse.
Swimm graduated from California State University, Fullerton in
Theater and has fond memories of working at the Disneyland
Resort. “I really enjoyed ‘Animazement,’ a stage show at
Fantasyland Theatre,” said Swimm. “I loved interacting with the
Guests and portraying our Disney stories.”

Los Angeles Times - Walt Disney Studios Chairman Rich Ross
approached Erik Feig, head of production at Summit Entertainment
and the executive behind the "Twilight" franchise, about
succeeding Oren Aviv as production chief at the Burbank studio,
according to people familiar with the talks. Ross ousted Aviv,
an 18-year veteran of Disney, late yesterday and is scrambling
to find his replacement.
But, it appears that Feig, who has worked at Summit for nine
years and is still under contract, is staying put.
"He's not going to Disney and he never asked to be released
from his contract," said his boss, Rob Friedman, chief executive
of Summit. Feig did not respond to a call or e-mail seeking
comment.
A Disney spokeswoman did not immediately return calls.
It is understandable that Ross would court Feig. He fits the
mold of the newly reshaped Disney studio, where Ross is trying
to rein in costs and launch new franchises that don't
necessarily depend on big stars.
Feig, who began his career by producing Sony Pictures' teen
horror film "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and then went on
to produce that studio's teen comedy "Slackers," was the
executive who brought Stephanie Meyer's vampire books to Summit
after Paramount Pictures put the project in turnaround.
"Twilight," which cost $37 million to produce, and its
$50-million budgeted sequel, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," have
collectively grossed $965 million at the worldwide box office.
The next installment, "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," is due out
in June. Feig is also overseeing Summit's dance sequel "Step Up
3D," which Disney is distributing in the U.S.
Feig, who is president of worldwide production and
acquisitions at Summit and has been a partner in the studio
since 2007, was also involved in his company's purchasing the
distribution rights to Kathryn Bigelow's Iraq war drama "The
Hurt Locker," which has garnered a number of award nominations
and is expected to be a best picture contender at the upcoming
Oscars.
Elle UK - We have a feeling that Tim Burton's Alice in
Wonderland is set to be the most talked about topic around over
the coming months. Not only does the trailer look incredible, an
impressive array of fashion and beauty's biggest names are
designing pieces to accompany the film
The latest to be announced? Stella McCartney, who has
apparently teamed up with Disney to design a collection of
Alice-themed jewelry - think rabbits, Mad Hatter's hats and
hearts and spades. The Brit designer has created a limited
edition necklace and bracelet, both of which will hit her stores
at the end of this month.
Stella follows in the footsteps of jewelry designer Tom Binns,
who has also designed a selection of pieces adorned with teacups
and hearts for Disney.
And even the beauty brands are getting in on the act -
O.P.I.are offering up four new colors called 'Off With Her Red',
Thanks So Muchness!', 'Absolutely Alice' and 'Mad As a Hatter,
while Urban Decay has produced a limited edition version of it's
Book of Shadows eye palette that features a pop-up scene from
the Alice in Wonderland book.
AP - NBC is getting something that you never want to hear from a
top executive at one of its rivals: pity.
Stephen McPherson, ABC's entertainment president, said NBC's
struggles -- coming to a head this week with the cancellation of
Jay Leno's prime-time show and Conan O'Brien saying he'll quit
rather than accept a later time slot for the "Tonight" show --
are not something he takes pleasure in.
"We want them to be vibrant and we want them to be a good
competitor," McPherson told reporters. "It's kind of like
playing for the Yankees, and the Boston Red Sox decide to stop
playing baseball."
The only positive in Leno's prime-time failure is that it
puts the emphasis back on scripted programming, which viewers
seem to want at the 10 p.m. hour, he said.
ABC has had its own successes and failures this season, but
they celebrated the successes Tuesday by announcing that three
of its Wednesday night comedies -- "Modern Family," "Cougar
Town" and "The Middle" -- would be back for second seasons next
fall.
ABC took a risk last fall in scheduling four new comedies
Wednesday nights, and it's a strong batting average for three of
them to work. The fourth, Kelsey Grammer's comedy "Hank," is
already off the air.
The good news spread fast on the set of "Modern Family," said
Steven Levitan, one of the show's producers. He said he stepped
off stage to take a call from ABC executives informing him of
the pick-up, and by the time he was done, most of the actors had
learned from Twitter.
"When I came back to make the big announcement, they said,
`Yeah, we know,' " he said.
McPherson also said "Bachelor Pad," a spinoff series to its
hit "The Bachelor," will launch this summer.
ABC is owned by The Walt Disney Co. NBC is owned by General
Electric Co.
New York Times - It's Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel for the
First Kids -- and a lot of sports for the President and First
Lady when it comes to their TV habits.
"They can only watch the kid-TV channels for the most part,
because you just never know," Michelle Obama tells People.
President Obama, however, says he makes one exception: if
daughters Sasha and Malia want to watch sports with him.
"Unless they want to watch football with me, which they're

KIVI Today - The Disney Store in the Boise Towne Square Mall
will soon be no longer.
In a prepared e-mail, company spokewoman Shawn Turner said,
"As we strategically balance our retail portfolio and prepare to
launch newly designed Disney Stores across the U.S. and Europe,
we continue to consider opportunities to maximize the
distribution of our current store locations and strengthen our
position in today's retail environment."
"Although we have decided not to renew leases at some of our
current locations, we are looking forward to having a presence
in new markets as we roll out the new store design over the next
five years," she added. "We are making every effort to place
impacted Disney Store cast members in other locations, and are
offering affected guests referrals to nearby stores or the
opportunity to visit DisneyStore.com which is available 24 hours
a day. We are keenly focused on reinvigorating Disney Stores
Worldwide as a unique, interactive, and immersive shopping
experience, and this is one step in our long term plan for
future growth."
Turner would not give a date for the closing, saying only
that it will happen "later this year."
She also would not disclose the number of employees who would
be impacted, citing corporate policy.
New York Times - The top production executive
at Walt Disney Studios, Oren Aviv, has
resigned under pressure in the latest of a string of
management overhauls at the struggling company, according to
people with knowledge of the matter.
It was only in November that Rich
Ross, who became chairman of Walt Disney Studios in October,
named Mr. Aviv, a 19-year-veteran of the company, as one of
his four principal lieutenants. As president of Walt Disney
Studios Motion Picture Production, Mr. Aviv was responsible
for all aspects of the developing and physical making of
live-action movies like the forthcoming “Alice in
Wonderland.”
“With his terrific filmmaker relationships and creative
expertise it is a natural and logical choice for Oren Aviv
to assume oversight of physical production,” Mr. Ross said
in a statement at the time.
A Disney spokeswoman did not immediately return a call
seeking comment about Mr. Aviv’s departure.
Despite the show of confidence, Mr.
Ross concluded that he wanted to name a production executive
who had not been part of the studio’s previous regime, the
people with knowledge of the matter said. Moreover, more
upheaval is on the way: As Mr. Ross continues to reshape the
studio – he has essentially gutted the previous management
team, including dismissing the studio’s top marketer – more
restructuring, particularly in the home entertainment
division, is expected.
The studio, which lost money in the
last two quarters, now is operating without marketing and
production chiefs, two jobs of incredible importance to
running a motion picture operation of Disney’s size. Aside
from “Alice,” directed by Tim Burton, upcoming films include
“Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” starring Jake
Gyllenhaal.
Mr. Aviv’s departure will stir up
fresh aligations in the Hollywood creative community about what
exactly is going on at Disney’s studio. Mr. Ross has
declined interview requests since taking the job, and Mr.
Aviv was popular with producers and stars alike.
Disney News - Hi
Disney Parks Blog
readers, we have an update on work being done at Castaway
Cay, Disney’s private island paradise in the Bahamas.
The island is undergoing enhancements to provide new
experiences for our guests and a slice of beachside luxury.
Work is scheduled to be complete by Summer 2010 but we have
an early look courtesy of our friends at Walt Disney
Imagineering.
Some of the enhancements taking shape on the island
include an expanded family beach, a new family water
playground with spraying misters and squirting water jets,
and a new Scuttle’s Cove water play area for kids, with pop
jets, geysers and bubblers. Also being added is a new water
feature called Pelican Plunge – a 2,400-square-foot floating
platform with two cool corkscrew water slides.
And for a slice of beachside
luxury, guests can enjoy one of 16 new private rental
cabanas located on the expanded family beach.
Orlando Sentinel - Even as they attempt to dig out from
the global recession, Walt Disney World and other theme
parks could face a new threat: Higher crude oil and gasoline
prices.
That’s a potential concern raised by stock-research
analysts who follow the Walt Disney Co. for Janney Capital
Markets.
“We suspect the dramatic rise in the cost of cruise
may…limit regional attendance (ie: those that drive to
parks) and may start to incrementally weigh on margins,”
analyst Tony Wible wrote in a research note issued
yesterday.
The oil-price fear is part of a mixed outlook Wible has
for Disney’s theme-parks business. He also expresses concern
that Disney has continued to discount — with offers
including a free $750 gift card for guests who book
five-night stays in certain Disney World resorts — saying
“we generally believe these promotions are a negative
harbinger for the health of the parks business.”
But he also noted that traffic at Orlando International
Airport and hotel-occupancy rates in Orlando have turned
positive after extended declines.
Wible predicts attendance at Walt Disney World and
Disneyland will fall 3.6 percent for the
October-through-December quarter (the first three months of
Disney’s fiscal year) and 2.6 percent for the full fiscal
year.
He expects revenue at Disney Cruise Line to remain flat
at $127 million for the fiscal first quarter and to slip 2
percent for the full year to $575 million. And at the Disney
Vacation Club time-share business, he forecasts sales to
climb 2 percent for the quarter to $150 million and 2
percent for the full year to $598 million.
And the analyst says cruise-rate checks “suggest that
pricing generally held up well until the end of 2009.” In
fact, he estimates that prices per passenger night at Disney
Cruise Line inched up 2 percent during the
October-through-December quarter (to $281.52), essentially
offsetting a 1.8 percent decline in total passengers.

ABC News - Justin Timberlake,
Christina Aguilera and others went on to pop stardom after
appearing on "The All New Mickey Mouse Club" as kids.
Co-star Matt Morris just wanted to go home to Denver.
"I didn't want to rush toward a rich-and-famous
contract," said Morris, now 30, tattooed and married, with a
dark beard framing a grin. "I just wanted to go to high
school."
He kept in touch though, writing songs with and for
Timberlake and Aguilera over the years.
On Tuesday, Morris is releasing his own full-length album
on Timberlake's Tennman Records. "When Everything Breaks
Open" is the first full-length national release for
Timberlake's label.
"I've never been treated like someone who gets a free
ride just because I'm a friend," Morris said of Timberlake.
"We've held each other to a really high standard, even when
we were kids. We don't just let things slide."
"I've known Matt since I was 10," Timberlake said in an
e-mail, "so we've watched each other grow up with music
around us constantly. It goes without saying that I think
Matt is beyond gifted, and it's just nice to have a forum
where he can put his music out and trust the person taking
care of it.
Morris got his start in music early. Dad is country
musician Gary Morris, and Mom sings and plays piano. As his
mother tells it, she would sing a note to him in her arms
when he was a baby, and he would sing it back.
In grade school, he watched the Disney Channel on his
grandmother's TV. When he saw an ad asking kids to audition
for a new Mickey Mouse Club, he went for it, winning a spot
on the variety show over hundreds of other kids. The show's
young stars, including Britney Spears, spent time with
acting and dancing coaches, in front of cameras and in
recording studios.
"Everyone came out of it really prepared for whatever
would come in the professional world, whether it be movies,
TV or albums," said Morris, who was on the show from
1991-1995.
After the show ended, Morris went home to Denver. He was
in his high school's musicals and spent time volunteering in
Paraguay. After graduation, he moved to Nashville, where he
took some classes at Belmont University, a Christian school.
It was in Nashville that he saw musicians making a living
at writing their own songs.
"It was a new beginning for me," he said.
A self-released album that took about a month to complete
came out in 2003, followed by tour dates opening for The
Indigo Girls and Joan Osborne, plus gigs at coffee shops and
small clubs.
"When Everything Breaks Open," produced by Timberlake and
Charlie Sexton, took about two years to record, and plenty
of people contributed.
"I've heard every acoustic version of every song Matt's
ever written, because that's how he writes, and that's how
they start," Timberlake said. "Charlie, I think, brought a
whole new life and a different color for every progression
that Matt wrote."
Timberlake, Patty Griffin and Edie Brickell provided
background vocals. Morris' husband, Sean Michael Morris,
inspired the song "Love" and helped write lyrics for "Just
Before the Morning."
The lyrics for "Love" make no mention of the singer's
object of affection, but Morris doesn't hide his husband in
the liner notes on his album. The two went to California to
get married.
"When certain fundamental elements of life become
political, like love, to have any integrity, you have to
have a political voice," he said. And it doesn't take being
loud. "You just have to be honest," he said.
With the new album, Morris joins a diverse mix of
Colorado artists including The Fray, Flobots and 3OH!3
getting national attention.
Morris' album includes pleading ballads like "Let It Go"
with piano and strings but also songs with elements of soul,
funk and radio pop.
"Patty Griffin, her music has been with me for years.
Maybe this record can be that for other people," Morris
said.
World Screen News - The Walt Disney Company EMEA has
released some of the findings of what it is calling the
biggest-ever pan-European survey of tweens, exploring the
media habits of more than 3,000 8- to 14-year-olds in six
key markets.
The research will be used by
the company as part of its marketing, communications and
content-creation strategies for the so-called Generation
XD—kids born between 1995 and 2001 who have never
experienced a world without the Internet. The survey looked
at the habits of tweens in Italy, France, Germany, the U.K.,
Poland and Spain.
"This research will allow us
not only to continue to deliver unrivalled entertainment for
our audience, but also enhance the way we work with partners
to reach tweens via the channel with strategic marketing
initiatives and content creation," said Nicole Morse, the
executive director of marketing at Disney Channels UK.
“Generation X parents were unique in embracing the digital
age, so they in turn have made their Generation XD children
unique by encouraging them to do the same from birth. XDs
are using digital technology alongside face-to-face
communication to set the agenda for the coming decade, and
are socially conscious, eco aware and family orientated. In
fact, XDs are totally reshaping our perceptions of youth."
Among the findings about this tech-savvy generation is that
face-to-face contact is still the most preferable way to
meet up with friends (30 percent), topping texting (15
percent), online chat (14 percent) and mobile (8 percent).
However, 95 percent of respondents say that the Internet and
computers are important to them, 53 percent indicate that
the Internet improves their life by helping them talk to
their friends outside school, and 44 percent say its easier
to stay in touch with friends because of the Internet.
Gaming is the most common use of the Internet, at 74
percent, followed by homework at 59 percent.
The research was carried out by
Disney, The Future Laboratory and TNS via an online survey.

Walt Disney
Studios Home Entertainment - An eight-year-old misfit with his
head in the stars learns that being different can also mean
being special in the emotional and entertaining Like Stars on
Earth, coming to 3-Disc DVD/CD set January 12, 2010 from Walt
Disney Studios Home Entertainment. Like Stars on Earth includes
seven infectious Bollywood dance numbers, vividly imagined
animated interludes and a brand new English-language track for a
cross-cultural celebration of creativity and individuality. "A
little twinkling star of a movie" according to BBC Movie
Reviews, Like Stars on Earth is a sparkling example of why
Indian cinema has rapidly become the most popular film import to
the U.S.
Originally brought to a worldwide theatrical audience by UTV
Motion Pictures, and produced, directed and starring Aamir Khan,
one of India's most acclaimed filmmakers (Lagaan, 2002 Academy
Award nominee, Best Foreign Language Film, India), Like Stars on
Earth also features young newcomer Darsheel Safary in an
astonishingly nuanced performance that earned him a 2007
nomination for Best Actor in India's prestigious Filmfare
Awards. Like Stars on Earth was one of India's top grossing
theatrical films of 2007.
In this touching and inspiring film, eight-year-old Mumbai
native Ishaan Awasthi (Darsheel Safary) lives in a world where
letters dance exuberantly with the brilliant colors, lively
animals and joyfully soaring kites of his fantastical
imagination. Struggling to read and write and unable to deliver
the good grades and disciplined behavior expected by his parents
and teachers, Ishaan is shipped off to a boarding school to
straighten out. Almost 200 miles from home and suffering from
homesickness, Ishaan alone is unmoved when a new art teacher (Aamir
Khan) energizes the classroom by asking students to think, dream
and imagine, instead of merely following the rules. Determined
to draw the introverted child out, the teacher sets about
helping Ishaan find the wondrous power of creativity that lies
within him.
Like Stars on Earth has a suggested retail price of $29.99
(U.S.) and $35.99 (Canada).
Gather - The Disneyland versus Disney World debate is something
that we continuously hear. Which is better? The answer is
illusive, definitely depending on what you appreciate and how
much you love Disney.
There are some basic differences to keep in mind:
The size of the parks. Disneyland is far smaller than the metro-plex
Disney World. There are so many more attractions and shows at
the Orlando park that is becomes a vacation that requires more
time than you do for Disneyland, which is smaller and more
concise.
The originality of the Disney Resort. Call them silly, but some
of Disney fans prefer that Disneyland is Walt Disney's original
vision. This doesn’t mean it is any better or any worse. In
opposition, Disney World did not enjoy that exact vision since
the Disney creator wasn't around to see the park when it was
finished. On the flip side, new ride and shows found at Disney
World are more plentiful than at Disneyland.
The time of the
year. No doubt, it is great to have a Disney experience no
matter when, but some times of the year are better than others.
At Disneyland, it is rare to see the park closed for a
hurricane, but earthquakes -- though occasional -- make it
essential for the park to be closed in order to check security
after a shaker.
Finally, one point that is important to point out: Every Disney
fan needs to check out both parks to see and experience what
each has to offer. Then, it is up to these fun-loving folks to
decide for themselves which is their favorite -- if, indeed,
that's possible. To be sure, two, three, or even a dozen
different visits at each park may be required in order to
decide.
OCRegister - Today, visitors can start renting strollers and
wheelchairs at a new
location at the
Disneyland Resort.
The Disneyland Resort Stroller Shop is set to open in the plaza
between Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure. The shop
sits right of Disneyland’s main entrance and windows will face
the plaza. That way, visitors can rent their wheeled devices
before they enter the amusement parks, said Betsy Sanchez, a
Disneyland Resort spokeswoman.
The shop opens daily about a half
hour before the park opens and remains open about an hour after
closing.
WPDE - The Suggs family of Horry County will be heading
to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida to vacation while the
Extreme Makeover team builds them a new home in 7 days.
Today Ty Pennington and the design team knocked on the
family's door and gave them the surprise of a lifetime - the
dream of a new home in which to raise their family.
28-year old Derrick and 26-year-old Amanda have two children
of their own, 5-year-old Walker and 9-month-old Mason. They've
also adopted Amanda's three younger brothers, 19-year-old James,
17-year-old Jacob, and 10-year-old Jordan.
The family lives in a home Derrick inherited from his
grandfather. Built in 1953, it came with a long list of repairs,
including a leaking roof, outdated and exposed electrical
wiring, a rotting foundation, and broken and cracked asbestos
siding on the outside of the house.
Coming up tonight on News Channel 15 at 6, you'll meet the
Suggs family and hear more of their amazing story.

News - Hi, I’m Paul Hiffmeyer, Chief Photographer for Public
Relations here at the
Disneyland Resort.
Like my counterparts at the Walt Disney
World Resort, I’m lucky enough to have access to many areas
not usually visited by our guests, usually with camera
in-hand, and it seems like a good time to share some
never-before-seen photos on the Disney Parks Blog.
For the first photo, I wanted to share one that I’ve
thought about for a long time, but only recently shot; a
long lens photo of a Disneyland Steam Train on a cold
morning where the train seems to glide on a steam cloud.
Last month on an especially cold morning I set out with my
camera and a 28-300 mm lens in hand to capture the No. 3
Engine, Fred Gurley, as it made its way through Frontierland.
Disney News - Those of you who’ve been following the
DisneyParks Blog have read about the
first official Disney Parks mobile application – Mobile
Magic – available on Verizon Wireless phones. What you may
not know is that in addition to attraction wait times,
FASTPASS return times and other very helpful theme park
information, also included are wildlife facts and photos for
many of the animals at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
On your Verizon phone, you can discover, for example, that a
bull African elephant eats in one day as much as an average
person eats in an entire year, that flamingos often feed
with their heads upside down and their beaks under water,
and that Komodo dragons can smell their next meal from 2.5
miles away. In addition to learning about the animals
(including seeing their photos and finding out their
whereabouts at Disney’s Animal Kingdom), all animal
descriptions include steps we can take to protect wildlife
and wild places. For example, all of us can help by choosing
our pets wisely, practicing the 3 R’s (reduce, reuse,
recycle), creating habitats for wildlife in our backyards,
and supporting the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund and
local conservation
organizations.
Next time you’re at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, you can take a
peek at Mobile Magic on your Verizon phone and wow family
and friends with your animal and conservation knowledge by
sharing, for example, that the very long neck of the giraffe
they’re looking at has the same number of vertebrae (seven)
as they do. The only difference is that each vertebra is
about one foot long!
Disney Dreaming - Yesterday, Sunday, January 10th, a
memorial service was held for Walt Disney’s nephew
Roy E. Disneyat Hollywood’s El Capitan Theater.
At the memorial there were live performances as well as
clips from Roy’s award-winning movies. The 1,000 guests were
asked to avoid wearing the color black, as this was a
celebration of Roy’s life, rather than a mourning of this
passing.
Roy helped on the following list of Disney movies:
- Beauty and the Beast
- The Little Mermaid
- Aladdin
- The Lion King
- Fantasia 2000
Orlando Sentinel - At Epcot on Sunday, I expected it to be
cold and possibly crowded with those in town for the
marathon. But what I didn’t expect was to see Christmas
decorations everywhere and hear holiday music playing at the
entrance.
The Candlelight Processional and Holidays Around the
World are long over, so the giant Christmas tree at the
center of the park and the smaller ones near restaurants
surprised me. Most Disney World decorations were taken down
this week, but perhaps the Epcot elves were reassigned to
cold-weather preparations? We saw many plant beds neatly
covered throughout the park; gloves, scarves and hats were
on display in stores; and the hot chocolate was flowing.
Below-average temperatures make going to a theme park a
different, and welcome, experience from most of the year
when we’re battling the heat. The first indication of the
cold: hiccupping FastPass machines. Cast members were
available, though, to reset the machines more often than
usual. Children in strollers were tucked securely under
blankets for their rides between attractions, and the
jumping water fountains kids play in were not only turned
off, but roped off.
Epcot is my favorite Disney park for a visit with kids
during inclement weather. Each building has many things to
do, so you’re not forced to wander outside after each
attraction. On days like Sunday, we tend to stay at the
front of the park in Future World. My kids, ages 5 and 7,
really love Innoventions East and West, and from there it’s
a short walk to the The Land pavilion and Living With the
Seas With Nemo and Friends. Spaceship Earth and the Electric
Umbrella Restaurant also are nearby.
The best part about the Electric Umbrella? Free refills
on hot chocolate, which is always a crowd-pleaser.
ZDNet
- Got kids? Love Disney? If you answered yes, then I’ve got
a couple of iPhone apps that you may want to bring along on
your next trip amusement park hopping.
Disney World Wait Times
(App Store, $0.99, pictured) - Think of this one as
a crowdsourced cheat sheet that conveniently displays the
wait times (in minutes) for all the major attractions in the
four main Disney parks. Don’t forget to do your part and
submit updated times when you’re in-park.
WDW Magic Kingdom Mini Guide
(App Store, $0.99) – Map your exact location within Magic
Kingdom via this helpful GPS-enabled app. I use this mostly
for its maps, but it also includes brief descriptions of
each attraction (including riding restrictions) and an icon
for rides that accept FastPass. Basic dining info is also
included but I rely on Disney World Dining (next) for that.
Disney World Dining
(App Store, $1.99) - can be dicey. For example, did you know
that there are are only four restaurants at Magic Kingdom
that have full table service? It’s true, so either get this
app, or get in the buffet line. You can also use it to
review menus and maps. My recommendations for dinner are the
Liberty Tree Tavern in Magic Kingdom and Biergarten in
Epcot.
WDW Secrets Gold
(App Store, $1.99) – Over 200 theme park secrets and fun
facts are compiled into this app and organized into an
interesting guided tour with pictures. Bonus: find the 80
hidden Mickeys.
Similar GPS-enabled map apps are also
available for Hollywood Studios (formerly MGM), Animal
Kingdom and DisneyLand, although I had trouble with the
Epcot Mini Guide, the GPS kept flipping out and my location
was erratic on-screen.
Bonus app: Before you leave for
vacation I recommend that you also spring for
Postage (App Store, $4.99) which allows you to
create, email and share beautiful custom postcards using the
iPhone’s camera.
Orlando Sentinel - Saturday marked the end of the Hollywood
Studios meet-and-greet with Prince Caspian from the
Chronicles of Narnia movie series. The prince was stationed
in a small room adjacent to the Journey Into Narnia: Prince
Caspian exhibit.
I had never seen his indoor meet-and-greet location (Caspian
previously met guests outside near the attraction queue) so
I ventured over on Friday.
The indoor set was very nicely designed, all forest-glade
trees and a pretty sky in the background. And Prince Caspian
was a charming host. Unfortunately the frosty weather in
Orlando this week did a number on my camera battery, which
died on the spot when I turned my camera on.
“Unfortunately, I cannot summon Aslan to fix it,” Caspian
mused. “And I do not have Queen Susan’s horn with me.” Well,
there was no need for the horn — all of Narnia was not in
peril just because my camera was being balky! (The image
with this post is a file Disney photo.)
If Disney ended the meet-and-greet because of a lack of
visitors to the gracious prince, the fault lies partly with
the promotion (or lack thereof) of the prince’s presence.
Signage was rather minimal at the entrance to the
attraction: there are 2 queues, one marked “and meet Prince
Caspian”; the other for the attraction only.
On Friday, guests did not seem to even notice the sign for
the queue leading to the prince. Most were in
“theme-park-herd” mentality and were rushing to the
attraction-only queue because other people were in that
line, which is closer to the door.
Also curiously, the wait time was listed as shorter for the
attraction-only line. Yet those people were standing outside
in the cold, waiting for the doors to open, while I walked
right in to see Prince Caspian — no line, no wait.
A cast member out in front, directing guests, and telling
them there was no wait at all (contrary to what the sign
said) to meet Prince Caspian would have gone a long way to
boosting his guests. As it was, I spent a pleasant five
minutes with him discussing his homeland: I’m a big fan of
Narnia, having read all the books from “The Lion, the Witch
and the Wardrobe” on during my youth.
Though the Prince will no longer be available for photos,
the attraction will continue to operate, Disney says.

Orlando Sentinel - Looks like Tom Staggs is going to be
making about the same amount as chairman of Walt Disney
Parks and Resorts as he was as chief financial officer of
the Walt Disney Co.
Disney on Friday filed updated
employment contracts for both Staggs and Jay Rasulo,
who swapped jobs at the start of
the year.
Under his revised agreement, Staggs’ base salary will
stay the same (it’s scheduled to rise to $1.4 million in
April). He also remains eligible for an annual incentive
bonus targeted at no less than twice his base salary ($2.8
million) and an annual stock award targeted at no less than
three times his base salary ($4.2 million).
According to Disney’s regulatory filings, Staggs received
$9.3 million in total compensation during the company’s 2009
fiscal year. That included a base salary of about $1.3
million, a cash bonus of $2.5 million, a stock award valued
at $3.5 million and stock options valued at $1.3 million,
plus some smaller benefits.
Staggs’ contract with Disney, which was signed in early
2008, runs through March 31, 2013.
Rasulo, meanwhile, has agreed to a new five-year contract
with Disney that will pay him on par with Staggs now that
he’s Disney CFO. Like Staggs, Rasulo will get a base salary
of $1.4 million and be eligible for an annual cash bonus of
twice that amount and stock award valued at three times that
amount.
Bluesky - At an event honoring the life of Roy E. Disney,
the Walt Disney Company announced that the studio's
animation building will be named after him. It's not known
if this is the original animation building or another, new
one. If it's a new one, The Roy E. Disney Animation Building
would be built on the studio lot in Burbank, not in Glendale
next to WDI on Flower Street as John Lasseter and Ed Catmull
originally wanted.
Unlike the Hat Building, which was designed with Michael
Eisner's ego in mind, this one would be designed with
animators in mind. You know them, right? It would be filled
with open spaces designed to make people bump into one
another, kind of like that other animation complex in
Northern California run by the Lamp. If it's a new building,
the exact location on the lot wasn't revealed, but in all
likelihood it will be placed in the parking lot across the
street from the ABC Building. This is where it was
originally planned over two years ago, but was nixed because
of the cost the underground parking structure was deemed too
expensive for that time. It's unknown what changes have been
made, but if built, the designs would be heavily influenced
by John and Ed with a little advise from Steve.
UPDATE: When I first heard this, I was curious as to
why an announcement would be made on a Sunday, and it
appears that this wasn't the original animation building,
but the Hat Building, guys. A re-naming, not a new building.
Big news like a new building would arrive on a weekday to
get the most press. Renaming a building that isn't built for
animation for a man that helped bring about the animation
rebirth of the company isn't nearly as big of news as we
would like. It would be nice to see some of those other
plans for the original "new" building. Being as we're in a
recession right now, I'm not sure that we'll see a new
structure unless WDAS starts making major box office which
sadly, "Princess and the Frog" hasn't achieved.
Disney Marathon: Brazilian Adriano Bastos wins sixth straight
title
Orlando Sentinel -
Brazil's Adriano Bastos didn't arrive in Orlando this week to
find a familiar climate for the 17th annual Walt Disney World
Marathon. But it didn't stop him from posting his customary
championship performance.
Bastos, 31, claimed his sixth
straight Disney Marathon title this
morning, crossing the finish line at Epcot unofficially in 2
hours, 22 minutes, 10 seconds.
The victory is Bastos' seventh overall and just three short of
his goal of 10 straight Disney titles.
No other men's runner has won the race more than twice since the
race began in 1994.
After leading at the 20-mile mark, fellow Brazilian Fredison
Costa, 32, was second in 2:22:40, and Ocoee's Jay Lumpkins, 24,
was third (2:24:20).
In 2008, Bastos called the 26.2-mile trek through Disney World's
four theme parks his "most difficult psychologically."
The unseasonably frigid Orlando temperature 28 degrees at the
start this morning was his biggest nemesis this time. Sunday's
winning time was more than two minutes slower than his 2:20:38
time in 2009.
Though weather for the marathon is not officially recorded each
year, Disney officials believed it to be the coldest starting
temperature in the event's history. Many of the more than 23,000
runners Sunday began the race in multiple layers of clothing.
By comparison, Sunday's forecast in Bastos' native Sao Paulo,
Brazil, called for a high of 86 degrees and low of 68.
LATimes - It was like any other class reunion -- friends who
hadn't seen each other for decades catching up while "When You
Wish Upon a Star" played in the background. But even though
there also was talk of old wounds and slights, this
holiday-season gathering wasn't marking the anniversary of any
high school or college graduation. Instead, the several hundred
people crowding into Hollywood's El Capitan Theatre had come
together to revisit one of the best comeback stories in show
business history: the resurrection of Walt Disney Animation.
The reunion was actually a screening of "Waking Sleeping
Beauty," a new documentary recounting the 10 years starting in
1984 when Disney's animation arm was transformed from a
rudderless shadow of its former self (the dark and disturbing
"The Black Cauldron" marking the nadir) into the creative and
financial heart (with the life-affirming "The Lion King" at the
apex) of the sprawling entertainment conglomerate.
Scheduled to
be released theatrically March 26, "Waking Sleeping Beauty" will
premiere to local audiences today at the Palm Springs
International Film Festival.
While the movie is not likely to
generate as much "is-that-fool-based-on-me?" chatter as 1992's
"The Player," the documentary does offer an unusually forthright
peek into one of the most contentious but ultimately fruitful
periods in modern Hollywood.
Inside the El Capitan at the screening for Disney animators
several weeks ago, the atmosphere was festive. "Most of you are
in this movie," the film's producer, Peter Schneider, told the
veteran animators before the movie commenced. Added the film's
director, Don Hahn: "It's your movie."
The introduction was only partly true -- "Waking Sleeping
Beauty" is Schneider and Hahn's story as well. The two were
witnesses to and participants in the animation turnaround:
Schneider was president of Disney animation during its
resurgence, while Hahn was a producer of the division's "Beauty
and the Beast" and "The Lion King" blockbusters.
Given their backgrounds and Schneider's explanation to the El
Capitan crowd of why he made the documentary -- journalists
covering the studio during that time loved recounting Disney's
boardroom fights, "but I never felt they captured the joy and
beauty of making these movies," Schneider said -- you might
expect "Waking Sleeping Beauty" to be self-serving hagiography,
a wart-free portrait of artists in all their animation glory. In
addition, the film was financed by Disney, which also will
distribute it.
What's surprising about the documentary, though, is that it's
not all singing squirrels.
"That period was very good and very hard," Ron Clements, a
director and writer of "The Little Mermaid" and "Aladdin," said
after the screening. "It was stressful, but it was a very fun
period."
"Waking Sleeping Beauty" doesn't paint over the conflicts that
not only were inevitable in Disney's resurgence but also were an
outcome of the turnaround itself, as the studio's most senior
executives (Jeffrey Katzenberg, Michael Eisner, Roy E. Disney)
squabbled over who deserved credit for the renaissance.
"We were hyper aware of not making a puff piece," Hahn said in
an interview.
"Waking Sleeping Beauty" tracks two parallel plots. The first
and most central to the documentary is how low Disney's
animation division had fallen in the years leading to the 1980s
-- "given up for dead," the movie states -- and what it took to
restore the division to its former brilliance. The second story
line follows the studio managers determined to bring the unit
back and how their infighting ultimately split Disney apart.
The documentary opens with the 1994 premiere of "The Lion King,"
which would go on to gross more than $780 million worldwide and
make vastly more money as a Broadway musical. "To an outsider,
it looked like a perfect world," Hahn says in the film's
narration. "But backstage, the tension had reached a peak."
The movie then takes audiences behind the Disney curtain.
A big shake-up
Though Pixar Animation Studios (now a part of Disney) currently
enjoys the best track record among any filmmaking company, what
the company founded by Walt Disney began to accomplish in
animation 25 years ago is scarcely less extraordinary --
especially given the division's doldrums.
Once the studio's artistic and economic lynch pin, animation had
tumbled from the cultural landmarks of the 1930s and '40s
("Fantasia," " Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "Dumbo") to
"The Fox and the Hound" and "The Black Cauldron," movies that
attracted as little critical attention as it did box office. As
badly as the Disney animated films were performing, morale among
the filmmakers was arguably worse; the animators were eventually
kicked off Disney's Burbank lot, to scruffy Glendale offices.
As the movie -- composed of archival footage and off-camera
interviews of the animators and executives -- makes clear, the
animators (including a young Tim Burton and John Lasseter)
weren't pushed to do their best: long lunches and midday
volleyball games rather than spirited story meetings and
motivated brainstorming were the norm. Competitors were taking
advantage: Disney exile Don Bluth's "An American Tail" beat
Disney's "The Great Mouse Detective" at the box office, and the
low-rent "The Care Bears Movie" even toppled "The Black
Cauldron."
That devil-may-care passivity changed in a 1984 shake-up. New
Chief Executive Officer Eisner (a hard-charging star at ABC and
Paramount Pictures) and studio chief Katzenberg (Eisner's
tireless, demanding Paramount partner) arrived in Burbank, and
Disney (Walt's nephew) was put in charge of animation, which had
been drifting without a leader.
Eisner is described in the film by Roy Disney as "a little bit
nuts" while animator Glen Keane labels Katzenberg "a maniac."
Hahn says of Katzenberg in the movie, "You never knew if he was
going to hug you or kick you."
What Eisner and Katzenberg might have lacked in people skills,
the two more than made up for in ambition and focus: They pushed
their animators harder than they'd ever been pushed -- Sunday
meetings at 8 a.m., for starters -- and the results, while
incremental at first, were soon forthcoming. The animators
rebelled over the boot camp discipline but soon realized they
had been artistically unleashed. (Eisner and Katzenberg declined
to comment for this story; Disney died in December.)
There was no fixing some long-gestating movies whose DNA was
terminally damaged (including "The Great Mouse Detective"), but
the division's new productions held better prospects, thanks in
large part to the songs of Howard Ashman. Still, there were some
nearly ruinous decisions. Katzenberg wanted to eliminate Ashman
and Alan Menken's "Part of Your World," one of the signature
songs from 1989's "The Little Mermaid," feeling it stopped the
movie. At one point, "The Lion King" was considered the troubled
movie, while 1991's "Beauty and the Beast," the only animated
movie nominated for the best picture Oscar, was once going to be
made without musical numbers.
As amusing in hindsight as those near missteps appear, the
fighting among Eisner, Katzenberg and Disney was a more serious
matter. In a Shakespearean twist, the kingdom they created was
undone by the results themselves -- they essentially succeeded
too well. When Frank Wells, Disney's peacekeeping Disney
president and chief operating officer, died in a helicopter
accident in 1994, the simmering internal feuds boiled over, as
pettiness replaced professionalism -- Eisner, for instance,
announced that Disney was building a new animation studio
without sharing his plans with Katzenberg.
Before long, Katzenberg, denied Wells' job by Eisner, would
leave Disney and help launch DreamWorks, now the biggest
competitor to Disney's once near-total animation monopoly.
Telling the full story
Schneider and Hahn said that though it took some work to
persuade Eisner to participate, Katzenberg was generous with his
time and input. The two were also careful to include
unflattering glimpses of their own behavior; Schneider in one
documentary scene lashes out at his animation staff over a spoof
memo sent under Schneider's name.
"But we did not do this to do a good guys and bad guys story,"
Schneider said.
He said he was inspired to make the movie in large part in
reaction to James Stewart's book "Disney War," largely a
takedown of Eisner's reign. Some of the animators in the film
said they believed the film fairly balanced the creative
accomplishments with the professional sniping.
"I was impressed with its honesty. It definitely felt fair,"
said Rob Minkoff, the director (with Roger Allers) of "The Lion
King," who arrived at Disney two years before Eisner, Katzenberg
and Disney. "Everybody who had been there just desperately
wanted it to change. There was this pent-up energy unleashed by
Jeffrey and Michael. I suppose if Frank Wells hadn't died in
that helicopter crash, the story would be different."
Schneider said the film is particularly relevant to today's
Hollywood. "It's a cautionary tale," he said. "It's about what
happens when growth is the goal as opposed to making great art
-- and then worrying over where the credit resides."
Orlando Sentinel - Chad Johnson and Emily Mortensen, both of
Rochester Hills, Mich., were the top men's and women's finishers
in the Disney Half Marathon this morning.
The 13.1-mile race, which began and ended at Epcot, featured
almost 23,000 runners who competed despite rain, sleet and
flurries and temperatures in the low 30s.
Johnson won the half marathon for the second time, finishing in
1 hour, 7 minutes, 2 seconds to edge his Michigan running-club
teammate, Sage Canaday, by 18 seconds.
Hunter Kemper of Longwood was fourth in 1:09:12.
Mortensen (1:20:58) won by almost a minute over Elizabeth Foster
(1:21:52) of Ellington, Conn.
The weekend's marquee event, the Disney Marathon, is set for
tomorrow morning, which may see a record low cold temperature.
The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning
from 9 tonight to 10 a.m. Sunday. A wind chill warning means a
combination of very strong winds and cold temperatures will
create "dangerously" low wind chill values.
Fort Wayne Journal Gazette - Cutting unused stickers and
sorting letters isn’t typically the ideal way to spend a
Saturday morning.
But the
promise of some free Disney magic lured more than 100 people to
help Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana do just that.
As part of Disney’s “Give and
Get” volunteer initiative, the first million people to help
participating non-profits will receive a free ticket to Walt
Disney World or Disneyland. A one-day adult pass costs $79,
according to Disney’s Web site.
That prize brought Kelley Bowyer
of Muncie, her husband and two children to Fort Wayne despite
frigid weather. Bowyer, who is a middle school principal in
Marion, said she learned about the Disney program through its
advertising and learned that Junior Achievement was a
participating group.
Because her students participate
in some of the Junior Achievement activities already, she
thought it would be appropriate to give back to the group. She
and her daughter Sarah were busy cutting unused stickers into
piles of 30 to keep the organization from having to buy new
packs.
“It’s a good idea to introduce
kids to community service and do it with them,” Kelly Bowyer
said.
The family is planning a trip to
Orlando, Fla., in the spring for Sarah’s 18th birthday.
Amber Schleinkofer, education
director for Junior Achievement, said having the event open to
young children and their families was one of the great things
about her group’s volunteer efforts.
“This was a great opportunity
for the entire family to get involved,” she said.
The influx of nearly 150
volunteers was of great help, Schleinkofer said. They helped the
group recycle unused parts of their learning packets to create
new packets for classrooms. She said the packets are designed
for 32 students, but many classes don’t have that many.
The effort will reuse about
$10,000 worth of materials, she said, and keep her staff from
having to spend two weeks doing the work. This allows them to
focus more on their primary responsibilities.
Junior Achievement works with
students from kindergarten through 12th grade to help them
understand business, citizenship, economics, entrepreneurship,
ethics, financial literacy and work readiness.
Schleinkofer said the group
plans to hold another volunteer workshop Jan. 18, Martin Luther
King Jr. Day.
Fresno Bee - Disney is a year away from launching a
permanent West Coast cruise option on its liner the Wonder. The
move gives Fresnans the chance to book a Disney vacation at sea
without the hassle or cost of a cross-country trek to Florida.
A year sounds like a long time away, but local travel agents say
it’s not too soon to book the Disney cruises, which will depart
from Los Angeles and sail to the Mexican Riviera and Alaska.
“Savvy travelers know that if they want to go on a Disney
cruise, they have to book early,” says Wes Rowland with The
Cruise Experts Agency in Visalia. “There’s really nothing that
compares to the Disney brand. And there’s a huge Disney market
in the Central Valley.”
The Disney cruise joins the likes of Norwegian Cruise Line,
Carnival Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean
International in making Southern California a port of departure.
Travel experts say January-March is known as the “wave
season” for cruises because the three-month period is when the
majority of sea treks are booked. Selecting a cruise now will
assure some travelers of the best price.
“The cruise business was down a little last year, but we are
seeing that the prices are going back up. That’s because the
ships are going out full,” says Morrie Frazier, owner of the
Clovis Cruise One travel agency.
The weak economy and the flu scare caused last year’s dip.
Frazier says cruises, in general, are popular because they
offer such a broad range of entertainment and dining options —
there is usually something to appeal to all ages.
What is making the 2011 move by Disney an attractive option
for West Coast travelers is the way the cruise line is designed.
Jonathan Frontado, Disney Cruise Public Relations Manager,
says each ship has areas of entertainment for the entire family
or for specific age groups.
“We want to make sure that if the entire family wants to be
together, there are places for them to go. But, if the children
want to go off on their own, then we have special, supervised
areas for them,” Frontado says.
The cruises offer a selection of live stage productions with
Disney themes, including a musical version of “Toy Story” that
can only be seen at sea. Disney shows the latest movies, opening
all new films on the ships the same day that they open in
theaters on land.
Disney has the only ships authorized to launch fireworks. The
aerial display often complements deck performances with a Disney
theme, such as “Pirates in the Caribbean.”
David Baldree, producer for Disney Cruise Line, has
coordinated at-sea entertainment for five years. His duties
range from youth-activity parties to deck shows to major
production numbers in the ships’ massive Walt Disney Theatre.
And his job is to make sure the entertainment fits all ages.
“We have activities for children, for families, for adults
and … in-between with the teens and the tweens,” Baldree says.
“The shows we do in the Walt Disney Theatre has to hit all those
ages. So it can’t just be a show for kids. It can’t just be a
show for adults.”
All of this entertainment is handled by about 200 cast and
crew members.
For adults, there are many nightclubs and lounges, such as
the Skyline and the Meridian Bar.
The ships offer a variety of dining choices, including
restaurants with specific culinary themes where you can eat
elaborate meals with American, French, Caribbean and Pacific Rim
influences.
Christine Weissman, Disney Cruise Executive Chef, and the
teams on each ship work to make dining a universal treat.
“Everything is planned from the morning until evening, and it
is always a work in progress,” Weissman says. “We really look at
new food trends while paying attention to what are guest
favorites.”
Travel agents say the Disney cruises are popular because
they’re kid-friendly but make an effort for all ages.
“The fact the Disney cruises will be available on the West
Coast will be great and really help our business a lot,” Frazier
says.
Naples Daily News - A chance for a day with Goofy and
Pluto at Disney World drew a crowd to Collier County’s animal
shelter on Saturday for volunteer orientation.
Disney World is
offering a free day at one of its parks to volunteers who
complete a day of service at the Collier animal shelter.
Volunteers participating in the Disney promotion must be at
least 8 years or older.
Collier Domestic Animal Services (DAS) is making an exception
to its normal rule, which regulates participants to age 15 and
older. To receive the one-day voucher for the theme park,
Disney-registered volunteers must provide at least one day of
service and anyone under the age of 18 is required to volunteer
with a parent present.
A critical part of the animal adoption process, last year
volunteers donated nearly 7,000 hours to the county shelter.
DAS officials hope the Disney promotion will drive even more
participation in 2010. And at the first orientation of the New
Year, families packed the room where DAS volunteer coordinator
Kathleen Drew presented a slide show and talked about DAS
animals.
Drew manages a force of more than 950 volunteers.
After an overview of the volunteer program, Drew took
participants on a whirlwind tour of the shelter complex.
“Don’t touch” was the message of the tour, as attendees
walked past cage after cage of dogs, cats, a bunny and even a
horse that was abandoned when its owners lost their house last
year.
Saturday’s cold, rainy weather left everyone at the
orientation shivering as they meandered through kennel after
kennel containing tame, wild, well and sick animals. The group
escaped the chill and rain, gathering near an enormous dryer in
the cat pavilion, prompting one participant to wish aloud that
she could climb in the dryer and turn it on.
But the weather couldn’t dull the spirits of the children who
came to the shelter with their parents and friends. Squeals of
delight filled the rooms as the hopeful faces of the cats and
dogs peered out at the children, accented by a chorus of barking
and meows.
As if on cue, the animals vocalized their excitement at
having so many visitors each time the group wandered into a
kennel.
“This is a great learning experience for our kids,” said
Sherri Scott of Bonita Springs, who attended the orientation
with her husband, Richie, and two kids, Shelby and Rilie. “We
have a dog so we were excited about coming to DAS, but this is
also a great way to teach our kids responsibility – they will be
working, helping the animals to earn their ticket to Disney.”
State law dictates DAS keep found animals for five days if
they are not reclaimed. Unclaimed animals become property of DAS
and adoptable pets are made ready for adoption.
“A lot of dogs got loose on New Year’s eve, spooked by
fireworks,” Drew said. “We’ve been really happy to return many
of them to their owners.”
One reason DAS is able to return so many dogs to owners is
because more owners than ever before are having pet
identification microchips implanted in pets. Cats aren’t usually
as fortunate because few owners outfit cats with collars or
tags.
Part of the mission of DAS is to promote the humane treatment
of animals, positive outcome for shelter animals and responsible
pet ownership, but the agency also is responsible for protecting
Collier County residents and visitors from animal-related
injury.
For this reason, though hundreds of animals in Collier County
need good homes, not all animals who come into the DAS system
are adoptable.
“Places like DAS are so important because they prepare these
animals for adoption,” said dog trainer Lisa Kiefer, who owns
and runs Naughty to Nice. “Many of these dogs are here because
people haven’t trained them. As soon as possible when you get a
dog, get him trained whether you attend a class or get a private
trainer.”
The DAS shelter is at 7610 Davis Blvd. and is offering other
volunteer orientation dates on Feb. 6, March 13 and April 10.
Interested participants must sign up for the DAS Disney
volunteer promotion through the Web site DisneyParks.com to
qualify for the one-day admission. DAS staff will then contact
volunteers to schedule the orientation.
For more information on becoming a volunteer, click to
CollierPets.com or call Drew at (239) 252-8657.
