New Featurette for "Toy Story 3" Can be Seen at Animation Academy

DisneyParks Blogs - Most people go to Animation Academy at Disney’s California Adventure park to learn how to draw Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters. Did you know that you can also see exclusive video of Disney and Disney•Pixar movies at Animation Academy?

Videos created exclusively for the Animation Academy usually feature one of the filmmakers giving a brief overview of the film and introducing the film’s main characters. In this featurette, “Toy Story 3″ Director Lee Unkrich explains the premise for the long-awaited third installment of the beloved “Toy Story” films. In this comical new 3D adventure, Buzz, Woody and the gang face an uncertain future as Andy gears up for college. When the toys unexpectedly land in a room full of untamed tots who can’t wait to get their sticky little fingers on them, it’s pandemonium as they try to stay together, ensuring “no toy gets left behind.”

Watch the video below or check it out on the big screen at the Animation Academy in the Hollywood Backlot at Disney’s California Adventure park. Disney•Pixar’s “Toy Story 3″ releases in theatres on June 18, 2010.

Another look at Fantasyland expansion at Magic Kingdom

Orlando Sentinel - Our friends at Stitch Kingdom have posted a picture of a 3-D model of the upcoming Fantasyland expansion at Magic Kingdom.

Below are the pics of the model and  previously released (by Disney) rendering. The angles are a bit different, but it’s still fun to compare and contrast.

New Tron Legacy Image Champions Light-Cycle Fetishism

Wired - Quick! Which blockbuster is going to pop the most eyeballs in 2010? If you said Tron Legacy, you can probably give yourself a pat on the back.

A new poster image circulated Friday by Disney adds firepower to the contention that the sequel to its 1982 sci-fi gamer fantasy could be the blockbuster of the year, especially if the Iron Man sequel underwhelms due to Mickey Rourke’s low-tech Whiplash outfit and Scarlett Johansson’s corny poses. No matter what, Tron Legacy’s light cycles look like they’ll dazzle brains silly in 2010.

Just check out that ride, pictured above and in the visual effects test footage below. It’s a fetishistic, futuristic merge of art, design and velocity, one that could give Tony Stark’s various armors a run for their repulsors.

Do you think Tron Legacy will beat Iron Man 2 in the race toward the top of the box office in 2010? Or will the smarmy Stark emerge triumphant? Let us know in the comments section below.

Will LEGOLAND Florida Hurt or Help Disney?

Motley Fool - Blackstone's (NYSE: BX) Merlin Entertainments Group didn't waste any time in making LEGOLAND Florida official. Just days after acquiring the now-closed Cypress Gardens attraction in Winter Haven -- Florida's original theme park -- the new owners are moving in with building blocks and LEGO bricks.

When the park opens in October 2011, LEGOLAND Florida will be even larger than its LEGOLAND California counterpart.

It's a gamble. Cypress Gardens has failed in different incarnations, and Winter Haven is roughly an hour's drive from the theme park hotbed of Orlando. However, there are also several reasons why it should succeed. Blackstone has hinted at spinning off Merlin as its own IPO, and if that materializes, failure won't be an option.

LEGOLAND Florida's arrival will be a mixed blessing for Disney (NYSE: DIS). On the one hand, the new park should bring more tourists to central Florida. Travelers coming down to check out LEGOLAND Florida will likely make the time to stop by one of Disney's four theme parks.

Conversely, the downside to LEGOLAND Florida is that Disney-bound tourists will likely head on over to kick the tires of the new attraction. Disney has spent the past few years transforming its massive Florida resort into a self-contained destination. It shuttles airport arrivals right to its hotels, making car rentals unnecessary. It prices its length-of-stay passes aggressively, encouraging visitors to spend an entire week on site.

LEGOLAND Florida will change that, just as the new Harry Potter land opening at Islands of Adventure -- a park co-owned by Blackstone and General Electric (NYSE: GE) -- will draw crowds when it opens in a few months.

By the time that the peak summer travel season of 2012 comes around, folks may think twice before committing to weeklong stays at Disney World when they have so many other area attractions to conquer.

This can create a bigger blow at the Disney-owned resorts than the actual turnstiles. Folks may not want to pay a premium to stay on Disney property when they will be spending a lot of time exploring neighboring parks.

The hospitality industry lives and dies by it occupancy rates. The reason that you'll find hotels aggressively marking down their rates through priceline.com (Nasdaq: PCLN) or promoting insane deals through Travelzoo's (Nasdaq: TZOO) Top 20 weekly emails is that even collecting a pittance for an overnight guest is better than that same room sitting vacant.

Disney's master plan has been to flesh out its themed hotels, keeping them filled with tourists paying premium rates.

One can always argue that Disney has already faced down the arrival -- and enhancements -- of several area parks. However, those parks have usually popped up several years apart. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and LEGOLAND Florida are hitting central Florida in back-to-back years. Tourists who hit Orlando once every few years will have surprisingly long checklists of non-Disney things to do in two years.

Disney can no longer rest on its laurels, and its planned improvements may not be aggressive enough.

Downtown Disney: Is Rainforest Cafe or T-Rex better for kids?

Orlando Sentinel - Rainforest Cafe and T-Rex are two exciting and similar restaurants at opposite ends of the Downtown Disney Marketplace. (They both belong to the Landry’s chain, after all.) But, if you only have time on your vacation to eat at one, which is the better choice for children?

Both eateries offer not just a meal, but a dining experience. At Rainforest Cafe, guests are seated deep in the heart of a rainforest, where gorillas, elephants, snakes and butterflies come to life when a storm washes over the restaurant. There are tropical fish tanks and lush vegetation surrounding the tables. If you’ve never been to a Rainforest Cafe, which has another location at Animal Kingdom and restaurants around the globe, it is something to see.

For my family, though, the rumble in the jungle wasn’t always a welcome sound. It’s loud and the lights flash like lightning and then dim while the animals scream — all of which can scare a young child. I’ll always remember one visit when my son was about 3. The rainstorm shook him up so much when it happened, he grabbed all his chicken nuggets and loudly demanded to leave at that very moment. For my fearless daughter, though, the noise wasn’t a factor at any age, so considering your child’s temperament is key.

T-Rex takes guests back to prehistoric times with various species of animatronic dinosaurs, embedded fossils, a meteor shower over the restaurant and a centerpiece ice cave that changes colors. The Downtown Disney site is the second location for T-Rex, which also includes a play area similar to The Boneyard at Animal Kingdom and a Build-A-Dino store (by Build-A-Bear Workshop).

My son finds the meteor showers very cool and much less intimidating than a rainforest storm, plus C and L love to stand in the ice cave when it changes colors. Many little boys develop a fascination with dinosaurs and all kids study the prehistoric creatures at some point, so dining at T-Rex can be a learning experience and a special treat. When asked what caused the extinction of dinosaurs, my then-6-year-old nephew correctly told his class meteors — and explained how he learned that bit of information at Disney World.

Perhaps the novelty of T-Rex — it opened last year — appeals to my family more because we’ve been to Rainforest Cafe many times over the years. We like all the entertainment extras at T-Rex and would recommend it if you have time for just one of the two restaurants.

Prices are comparable at both restaurants, ranging from about $12 to $30 for adult sandwiches and entrees. Seating for lunch and dinner is mostly available on a walk-up basis, though 20 percent of the tables are available for reservations through 407-WDW-DINE.

Rob Lowe leaving ABC's `Brothers & Sisters'

AP - Rob Lowe wants to downsize his TV family.

The actor will leave ABC's "Brothers & Sisters" at the end of the season, his publicist, Nicole Perez-Krueger, said Friday.

Lowe plays Sen. Robert McCallister, who is married to Calista Flockhart's character, Kitty. He has appeared on the drama for four seasons.

Perez-Krueger said Lowe is in talks with ABC for his own show.

This isn't the first time Lowe has left a role where he's part of an ensemble. He exited NBC's "The West Wing" in 2003 to star in "The Lyon's Den." The show was canceled after six episodes aired.

The 45-year-old actor said in an interview with The Associated Press in November that he was excited to play a bad guy in the TV movie "Too Late to Say Goodbye" because it wasn't the romantic lead.

"Bad guys are always the best-written characters, they get to be more outlandish. Sometimes the hero in a romantic lead can be a little dull if not handled right," he said. "... On television, I'm usually playing the romantic lead. I certainly do on `Brothers & Sisters,' and I sort of did on `The West Wing.'"

ABC is owned by The Walt Disney Co.

Disney World volunteers will staff phones during Haiti telethon

Orlando Sentinel - About 400 Walt Disney World employees have signed up to staff phones during a global telethon tonight aimed at raising money for earthquake-devastated Haiti.

Disneys says its “voluntEARS” will be fielding calls and processing donations out of the resort’s Orlando reservations center during the two-hour “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon, which will air on broadcast and cable networks tonight beginning at 8 p.m.

Earlier this month, the Walt Disney Co. pledged $100,000 toward rescue and recovery efforts in the impoverished island nation.

“Offering to help with the “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon is one of many ways The Walt Disney Company and cast members are extending their support to the people of Haiti,” Disney said in a written statement. “The tragedy has struck a chord at Disney as thousands of Walt Disney World cast members have close personal ties to Haiti and are still trying to locate friends or family members in the region.”

Wine bar re-opens at Disney’s California Adventure

OCRegister - A wine bar, which mostly is used for private events, has re-opened to the public during regular hours at Disney’s California Adventure.

The bar is open while the Wine Country Trattoria restaurant is closed for refurbishments. Workers are expanding the seating area
and kitchen, which is being renovated, said John McClintock, a Disneyland Resort spokesman.

The lower-level bar, which is part of the Golden Vine Winery area, is attached to the restaurant, sitting on the west side on the ground level next to San Francisco Street.

The bar was open to the public briefly when Disney’s California Adventure debuted in 2001. But the bar has mostly been used for private events and Disney’s California Food and Wine Festival ever since, McClintock said.

The trattoria closed earlier this month for renovations and is expected to re-open in late April or early May, McClintock said. The trattoria serves wine when it’s open.

Visitors can get to the bar by going to the Paradise Pier area and use the pathway near the bathrooms.

When the trattoria re-opens, more restaurant seating will be available in the upper-level area where the Vineyard Room and another bar used to operate. The room has been closed since fall 2008.

Robert Mondavi operated the Golden Vine Winery area during the first eight months of Disney’s California Adventure’s existence, but the wine maker pulled out of the restaurant and wine bars because of losses at the time.

Epcot: Flower & Garden Festival unfazed by freeze

Orlando Sentinel - This month’s frigid conditions may have been tough on your lawn and garden, but planners of the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival had a plan in place, just in case.

Disney World has greenhouses to protect everything for the event, which begins March 3. In some cases, the planting had not even begun when record-low temperatures came to Central Florida.

“As far as the Flower and Garden festival , because we know we’re going to do it, and because we have to start in the winter, we just generally plan that there’s going to be a bad freeze.,” says Eric Darden, horticulture manager for the festival. “Most years there’s not. But by taking that tactic, that way we’re not surprised. We were surprised by the length, but it didn’t hurt us.”

Plants for the flower towers and floating gardens weren’t planted until last week, after the cold passed. Should we get, just slap me, another freeze, the flower towers will be moved into greenhouses.

The earlier start for the festival (previously, it began in late March or April), changed the floral lineup a bit, and it should be more colorful than ever, Darden says.

“Most of the flowers that we’re using certainly for most of the festival are our winter annuals, such as pansies, petunias, things like that. They can take a frost,” he says. “The advantage we take from that, in most people’s opinions, those are the prettiest annuals. They are more vibrant.”

Darden says this year’s festival will have a record number of topiaries.

“We have enough greenhouse space for all 100 topiaries,” he says. “It was a little tight for a while, and they probably stayed in a little longer than they liked, but they’re fine.”

The festival runs March 3 through May 16, and is included in regular park admission.

Disney Security Guard Busted For Child Porn

Central Florida News 13 - A Walt Disney World security guard found himself on the other side of the law after being arrested for possession of child pornography.

Investigators said Rodney Dillon had large numbers of pictures and videos on his computer, in addition to fantasy stories regarding the sexual abuse of children.

Dillon inspected bags at the entrance of Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

He was placed on administrative leave and locked up without bond at the Osceola County Jail.

Depp talks Mad Hatter & New Looks at Disney’s Wonderland

BSCreview - We are getting closer and closer to the March 5th release of the Disney and Tim Burton 3-D presentation of Alice in Wonderland, and we now have a new featurette from the Magic Kingdom with one of the film’s star, Johnny Depp, offering commentary to scenes that feature his character, the Mad Hatter (we got a look of him earlier this month as well). Also released via YahooMovies are new stills from the film exposing more of that trademark Burton visual/style sense that makes him rather unique in his field as a designer.

The trailers and clips look pretty amazing, and there have been several released thus far including this teaser from last summer, October’s trailer, and December’s new trailer. Among those joining Depp in Burton’s Wonderland are Mia Wasikowska in the title role, Anne Hatheway as the White Queen, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, Michael Sheen as the White Rabbit, Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledu, Crispin Glover (Knave of Hearts), Stephen Fry (Cheshire Cat) and Alan Rickman (Caterpillar). We’ve also seen several promo images, including this fun 3-piece various images of Alice, and sets including character poster and landscape.

BSC has been covering Alice in Wonderland since last March, when Disney’s D-23 debuted images (their quarterly magazine) from the film. In related news, earlier this week it was reported that Tim Burton may next take on and give new life to a Sleeping Beauty adaptation called Maleficent, telling the story from the perspective of classical/historical antagonist in another Disney production.

Synopsis - From Walt Disney Pictures and visionary director Tim Burton comes an epic 3D fantasy adventure “Alice in Wonderland,” a magical and imaginative twist on some of the most beloved stories of all time. Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter. Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen’s reign of terror. The all-star cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Crispin Glover; Linda Woolverton wrote the screenplay.

Before Legoland opens, visit Disney’s LEGO Imagination Center

Orlando Sentinel - The LEGO Imagination Center at Downtown Disney is a favorite for so many children — it’s interactive play
for free. The Lego brand is so popular that Disney estimates more than 400 million children and adults have played with the bricks
all over the world.

The giant statues outside the store are amazing. Who can resist checking out more inside the store? There’s the family walking its
dogs by one entrance, Brickley the sea serpent in the nearby lake, and bigger-than-life-size action figures near the play area.

I’ve never seen the outdoor patio of the LEGO Imagination Center empty. Kids are always surrounding the tubs of Legos to build
their creations and then test them on a raised slope. Plus, there are window displays of cool scenes to study and play equipment
to climb.

When my children were younger, a trip to Downtown Disney for my family always included a stop at the Lego play area and
lunch next door at McDonald’s.

Now, they are much more interested in what’s inside the store — play sets of every kind. Some of this year’s impossible-to-find
Christmas gifts were the Spongebob Squarepants sets for ages 8 and older — sold out everywhere except eBay. And this
month Lego introduced a line based on the Toy Story characters.

The LEGO Imagination Center also features the world’s largest Pick-A-Brick wall and also holds building contests.

Hopefully, today’s news of Cypress Gardens being transformed into Legoland will mean cool tie-ins between the store and the
theme park once it opens next year. Legoland will be a 45-minute drive from Walt Disney World, so incentives might encourage
visitors to venture off property and try something new.

'Tooth Fairy' afflicted with hack buildup

Detroit Free Press - Dwayne Johnson tries to cash in on his "Game Plan"-proven kid appeal and strains to find a little Disney-magic in "Tooth Fairy," a sugary blend of "Enchanted" and "Monsters, Inc." that will make you want to brush and floss midway through it.

In "The Game Plan," Johnson played an arrogant football player who must learn sacrifice, humility and teamwork from a child. This time, the former wrestler known as the Rock is a cynical, washed-up minor league hockey player in Lansing, Mich., who has to learn a lesson about encouraging, not discouraging, children's dreams and fantasies.

Derek (Johnson) already has the nickname the Tooth Fairy thanks to his team enforcer role and his brutish skills on the ice. Seems he's good at knocking out the teeth of opponents.

He has the swagger of a has-been, along with a flashy Corvette that's s few years past its last tune-up. And he loves his puns: "That's the tooth, the whole tooth and nothing but the tooth!"

He's popular in Lansing, but he can't help ruining that by telling kids who want to grow up to be stars about the long odds working against their hockey dreams. Then he disillusions his girlfriend's daughter about the Tooth Fairy, and that's when the Fairy Godmother of Tooth Fairies calls him on the carpet. She's Julie Andrews and she's not keen on Mr. Cynic, especially after he makes fun of her accent.

He's busted for "first-degree murder of fantasy."

Derek is sentenced to be a tooth fairy, at her beck and call. No matter what he is doing, when the fairy Blackberry buzzes, wings pop out and he must trot out his magic wand, shrinking cream, amnesia dust and other tricks to go crawl under a kid's pillow, retrieve a tooth and leave a dollar bill in its place.

There are, of course, many fairy gags (more than a few too many), along with "Let's get small" references (Billy Crystal shticks it up in a cameo) and "wing envy" jokes. Worse yet, entirely too many minutes pass before TV actor-turned-director Michael Lembeck teaches ol' hockey puck-for-brains his lesson.

As ham-fisted as this is, a hint of what might have been a cute kids comedy shows up at random moments. But that Disney touch (which even Disney has trouble replicating) is missing. Even the hockey is unconvincing. So no dollar under the pillow for this cavity.

Quartet of clubs to play in Disney tournament

Major League Soccer -
‎The Houston Dynamo, FC Dallas, New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC will get an early taste of MLS competition when the four clubs compete in the inaugural Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

The tournament, which kicks off the re-launch of the complex and is part of the 2010 ESPN The Weekend, begins on Thursday, Feb. 25, with the Dynamo taking on the Red Bulls at 6 p.m. ET, followed by a clash between Dallas and Toronto at 8:30 p.m. ET. The winners will meet in the championship game on Saturday, Feb. 27, with the losers of the opening matches meeting in a third-place game earlier in the day.

"Bringing four Major League Soccer teams to Central Florida to play in the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic is very exciting and a big win for all of our local soccer players, fans, parents and spectators," said Disney Sports Area Manager Patrick Dicks. "ESPN The Weekend is serving as a major platform for these teams to prepare for the upcoming season and we are proud to have them be a part of this re-branding weekend."

The Dynamo have finished with at least a share of the Western Conference's best regular season record each of the past two seasons, and Dominic Kinnear's veteran side will be hoping to find the same success in 2010. Houston advanced to the Western Conference Championship in 2009, but were eliminated there by the LA Galaxy.

FC Dallas finished 2009 as arguably the league's hottest side, ultimately falling just short of an MLS Cup Playoff berth after a terrific second-half run. Schellas Hyndman developed an exciting attack around Budweiser Golden Boot winner Jeff Cunningham as FCD led the league in goals scored. Heath Pearce, who joined the team late in the season, and first-round SuperDraft pick Zach Loyd could add some defensive balance as FCD look to jump up into the Western Conference elite.

For Toronto and New York, the tournament will provide a testing ground for a pair of new head coaches. After making the jump to Toronto from Chivas USA, Preki will be looking to get the Reds over the hump in 2010 and into the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time in club history. The Reds have a talent-laden roster, but underperformed at times in 2009, most notably in a season-ending loss to the Red Bulls that cost TFC a potential playoff berth. Preki, however, brings a playoff pedigree to the table, having turned Chivas into annual contenders in the West.

Hans Backe, a veteran European coach, will make his MLS coaching debut with the Red Bulls, looking to turn around a club that went from being a 2008 MLS Cup finalist to the bottom of the Eastern Conference in 2009. The Red Bulls did finish 2009 on a high note under Richie Williams, who returns to the club as an assistant. Former MLS All-Star Juan Pablo Angel is also back at the front of the attack, and Backe figures to take a long look at first-round SuperDraft picks Tony Tchani and Austin da Luz in the tournament.

Disney Sports plays host to some of the top youth soccer tournaments worldwide. Disney's Soccer Showcase is one of the largest and most elite recruiting tournaments in the country, pulling in over 500 boys and girls youth soccer teams that compete for both medals and collegiate scholarships. The Disney Cup International is one of the premier international youth soccer tournaments in the world and since 1999 has brought in teams from more than 20 countries.

Opened in 1997, the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex is a premier multi-sport venue for amateur and professional sports in the United States and has recently undergone changes to incorporate signature ESPN elements, ultimately taking the sports experience to the next level. High-definition video cameras, along with high-definition video screens and two Jumbotrons, have been added throughout the complex. Game highlights and action will be broadcast across the complex, in all Walt Disney World Resort rooms and will also feed into a new state-of-the-art digital center with a direct uplink to ESPN in Bristol, Conn.

Daily tickets to the Disney Pro Soccer Classic will include admission to the complex for both games and entrance to ESPN The Weekend events that are taking place at the complex. Tickets can be bought on-site at the complex box office or through ticketmaster. For a full list of ESPN The Weekend events and ticket packages, visit www.disneysports.com and www.espntheweekend.com.

Disney worker accused of distributing child porn

Orlando Sentinel - A Walt Disney World worker charged with possessing child pornography and promoting a sexual performance by a child is being held without bail today in the Osceola County Jail, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Rodney Dillon, a security officer who checked bags at Disney's Hollywood Studios, was arrested this morning after an investigation by a statewide Internet pornography task force.

Dillon, 65, is charged with 55 counts of possession of child pornography, including "large quantities of images and videos of child pornography," according to FDLE.

He also faces one charge of promoting a sexual performance by a child.

The names of video files found Dillon's computer include Mafiasex, Underage Lolita and a reference to the rape of an infant, according to the arrest affidavit.

Authorities estimated that "that each of the children in the images and videos charged in this case were less than 12 years of age," wrote FDLE Special Agent Michael Stephenson of the agency's Computer Crime Center.

When investigators searched Dillon's residence off W. Irlo Bronson Highway last week, they also found "numerous 'fantasy' stories regarding the sexual abuse of children," records state.

It could not be learned Thursday how long Dillon had worked for Walt Disney World as a security officer.

Disney spokeswoman Andrea Finger said Dillon has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal case.

Walt Disney World employs about 58,000 workers and is Central Florida's largest private employer. Dillon was one of about 1,000 security officers. Disney does not release personnel information about how long employees have worked there, Finger said.

Dillon apparently moved to Central Florida several years ago from Pennsylvania, according to public records. They show he created two corporations in Kissimmee — one called Rodney Dillon Inc. and the other called Squadron Group, Inc. Corporate records did not indicate what type of business Dillon conducted.

A police officer in Largo, a city on Florida's west coast, first identified Dillon last month as a suspected child pornographer when the detective alerted the Central Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. The unidentified detective traced pornographic images of children being offered online to Dillon's computer, according to FDLE.

Besides FDLE and Largo police, the Osceola County Sheriff's Office participated in the investigation. The task force includes members of 31 law-enforcement agencies and state attorneys' offices, according to FDLE spokeswoman Kristen Chernosky.

Records show no previous arrests for Dillon.

What led to Disney Hotel molestation case?

OCRegister - Detectives in Santa Barbara County were investigating a separate case in late 2009 when they uncovered allegations of a molestation nearly 20 years ago at the Disneyland Hotel involving a former youth baseball coach and one of his players, authorities said.

Andrew Greenaway, 45, was arrested Tuesday at his Vandenberg Village home on suspicion of molesting the then-13-year-old boy at the Disneyland Hotel in 1991.

Santa Barbara County sheriff's officials said Greenaway had also invited the boy's teammates on the overnight Disneyland trip. On the day of the trip, Greenaway told the boy's parents that everyone else had cancelled, but he was still willing to take him on the trip, according to sheriff's officials. That's when the molestation is alleged to have occurred.

Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department spokesman Drew Sugars said detectives have talked to the victim, now an adult.

"The information we got from the victim plus other factors led us to file charges," Sugars said.

Since the mid-1980s, Greenaway has coached youth basketball, youth baseball and youth football teams until at least 2004, according to Santa Barbara sheriff's officials.

Greenaway was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of molestation and kidnapping or enticing with the intent to molest, according to the county Sheriff's Department.

His bail was set at $1 million.

Billy Ray Cyrus Talks 'Hannah Montana' End and Future Projects

BuddyTV
 - As his daughter Miley Cyrus tries out more mature endeavors in her career, actor and musician Billy Ray Cyrus is okay with letting go.  He knows that the 17-year-old pop sensation will be busy with her projects, so instead he's focusing on his own.

Still, one thing that keeps them together is the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana.  Now that it's coming to an end, what exactly will these stars get involved with?  There will be other shows and movies though, but the fans will certainly remember them most for this one.

Too bad for them, because Billy Ray Cyrus has confirmed that Hannah Montana really is on its last legs.  "The future is we are doing 11 more episodes," the 48-year-old star revealed to Inside TV.  "Disney will have new episodes to air all the way through 2011."

A spokesperson from Disney recently announced that the cast is filming the final episodes of Hannah Montana, and after which will wrap up production for the show.  Right now, the network is still airing season 3.  Following that would be the installment leading to the series' end.

Despite the arrival of the series' final season, Billy Ray Cyrus has no trouble dealing with endings.  He already took the opportunity to work on new material, which will certainly further him in his career.

During the premiere of his new flick The Spy Next Door, Billy Ray said, "Starting the year with [co-stars George] Lopez and Jackie Chan is a good way to do it."

He added, "I laughed so much making this movie.  I just stood around.  I knew my lines and got to play this character Colton James, and become something very different for me, this particular role."

When that's over and done with though, Billy Ray Cyrus has things covered.  "I have two more film projects after I finish 'Hannah,' and I am just excited about 2010," he announced.  Can't say we're really looking forward to it, but it still might be a commendable career move for the star.

Walt Disney World gets reduction in OSHA fine

Florida AP - A fine issued to Walt Disney World by a federal workplace safety agency for a serious violation that contributed to the death of a worker during a summer monorail accident has been reduced by 20 percent.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Disney World signed a settlement agreement on Friday, and the deal was made public on Tuesday. Disney had been fined $44,000 in December for breaches contributing to the July 5 death of 21-year-old Austin Wuennenberg, as well as other workplace violations. That fine has been reduced to $35,200.

A Disney spokeswoman said the resort worked with OSHA to address any concerns but declined to comment further.

Under the agreement, Disney says it will correct all four safety violations cited by OSHA.

Too Cute-sters!

DisneyParks Blog - “How cute!” This is the phrase I most commonly hear when someone sees the newest 3-inch Vinylmation figures – the Cutesters. I have to agree – they are pretty cute (it’s probably why we named them “Cutesters” and not the “Girly Series,” which was once a possibility for their name). This series is a departure from the previous Park, Urban and Holiday series we’ve released. I caught up with Lisa Badeen, the artist responsible for their design, to learn more.

“I submitted six designs around December 2008,” explained Lisa. “I thought these figures would make a nice addition to a future Urban series. I never thought they would become their own collection.”

As it turns out, timing is everything. The development team was looking to expand Vinylmation in a new direction by offering a “bright, over the top sweet and cute” (there’s that word again) collection. Before Cutesters, the Vinylmation packaging featured a rather dark palette with mostly black and gray colors. Cutesters would add a much needed “pop” to balance the various series.

Lisa explained that she was responsible for not only the 3-inch figure designs but also the packaging for Cutesters.

“I was asked to create the packaging for the Cutesters by Thomas Scott, lead designer for Vinylmation,” continued Lisa. “I pulled different elements from the 12 figures and incorporated those details into the packaging to tell a complete story. Brainstorming the concepts, however, took longer than actually drawing them. There were many concepts that didn’t make the final cut.”

When asked about her favorite figure, Lisa responded, “The owl is my favorite figure! The design is so simple and really fit the Mickey Mouse shaped canvas. In fact, I love the owl so much that I used it in some of the apparel items I also designed.”

Some of these new apparel items recently made their debut at D-Street, the new Vinylmation Mothership/urban inspired location that opened at Downtown Disney District in California. The bag pictured above (which is my favorite apparel item and according to Lisa has a “few extra secrets”) will fly into stores in Spring 2010.

Speaking of extra surprises, Guests should pay particular attention in this collection for something we haven’t done before. We think it will have you saying . . .

Kids newcomer wins Disney XD order

Broadcastnow
 - Disney XD has commissioned its first UK production from Sassy Films marking the indie’s first foray into
children’s programming.

Elstree Studios-based Sassy is best known for coverage of live red carpet events. But it will venture into kids production with
Next X
, an “action sports reality” series about six child skiers and snowboarders competing to become Disney’s “Next X
superstar”.

The hopefuls have been selected from UK and other European territories and will be mentored by professionals in the run up to the Winter X Games Europe, to be held in Tignes in March.

Their progress will be screened across a 6 x 3-minute series of shorts, culminating in a 30-minute special charting their performance at the games, alongside the world’s foremost skiers and boarders. The show will air in April across the EMEA region.

Disney XD replaced Jetix last August as the UK’s first boy-skewing children’s channel. It has a brief to spend money on UK-produced international formats, especially entertainment series focused on sports and music.

“It’s about aspirational characters, great stories and a sense of achievement,” vice president of programming Jonathan Bosely said just ahead of launch.

Nicholas Lazarus will executive produce the new series.

Disney Announces Name and Launches Web Site for New Family Destination Resort on O‘ahu

Disney News - The highly anticipated Disney destination resort currently under construction on the Hawaiian island of O‘ahu now has an official name and a dynamic new Web site offering an inside look at the project. The resort’s name – Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Ko Olina, Hawai‘i – reflects the company’s deep commitment to celebrating the islands’ rich history and traditions. Plans call for the first phase of the resort to open in fall 2011.

“We want this resort destination to reflect the vibrant culture that surrounds it. The name ‘Aulani’ expresses a connection to tradition and deep story-telling – and its roots are here in this land,” said Joe Rohde, senior vice president, Creative for Walt Disney Imagineering. “We’re so grateful to the local Hawaiians who led us to the discovery of this name, and our goal is to live up to its meaning.”

Rohde noted that Aulani translated from the Hawaiian language to English means “the place that speaks for the great ones” or “the place that speaks with deep messages.”

The Resort

Nearby to historical sites on the western side of O‘ahu, Aulani will be located on 21 acres of oceanfront property in the Ko Olina Resort & Marina development. The resort is planned to have 360 hotel rooms and 481 two-bedroom equivalent Disney Vacation Club villas.

Design plans call for amenities to engage every member of the family, a hallmark of a Disney vacation. Among the recreational highlights planned for the resort are pools and sunset-facing hot tubs, a snorkeling lagoon, a variety of kids’ club and other play programs for children, and a river, suitable for tube floating, running through a specially created volcanic outcropping.

The resort will also include an 18,000-square-foot spa designed with families in mind. The resort, built adjacent to a crystal-blue lagoon and a white-sand beach, is planned to also have two restaurants, a 14,545-square-foot conference center and 48,685 square feet of outdoor venues. Located nearby are the existing Ko Olina Marina and a Ted Robinson-designed, 18-hole championship golf course.

The Web Site

Disney has launched a new preview Web site, www.DisneyAulani.com, to provide updates and background information on the resort now under construction. The site also details some of the adventures and amenities under development, and includes conceptual art, descriptions of resort highlights, regularly updated resort information and photos of Aulani as it nears completion.

“We are looking forward to welcoming guests to Aulani to share the fun, immersive family vacation experiences Disney is known for combined with the beauty and culture of Hawai‘i,” said Djuan Rivers, vice president, Disney Vacation Club and Resort, Hawai‘i. “We are turning to the Hawaiian culture for inspiration in everything we are doing at Aulani, and we hope our guests will not only enjoy the Disney experience, but will also embrace the unique culture of Hawai‘i and its diverse people.”

Disney's New Destination Resort in Hawaii

DisneyParks Blog - Aloha! I have the distinct pleasure today of sharing some exciting news from Hawai`i. Believe me, I only step away from the beach — I mean office — to share really important news.

As you know, construction is well underway here on the Leeward Coast of O`ahu on Disney’s new family destination resort. For months, that’s what we’ve called it. Disney’s new family destination resort. Descriptive, but not too catchy.

That’s why I’m so excited to tell you that the place now has an official name: Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Ko Olina, Hawai`i. The name Aulani, for you mainlanders, means “the place that speaks for the great ones” or “the place that speaks with deep messages,” and it reflects our company’s ongoing commitment to celebrating the great culture and traditions of these magnificent islands.

Our oceanfront resort, planned to feature 360 hotel rooms and 481 two-bedroom-equivalent Disney Vacation Club villas, is scheduled to open its first phase in fall 2011. Until then, you can stay up to speed online at
www.DisneyAulani.com, where you’ll find the latest updates, images and more.

I’ll leave you to that as I head back to the beach. I mean conference room.

Buzz Lightyear in Space Design Wins Patch Challenge

DisneyParks Blog - Last year, when Buzz Lightyear returned home from space, Disney Parks launched an online Mission Patch Design Challenge. It was simple — students had the opportunity to design a NASA mission patch to commemorate Buzz’s return and the most creative entry and 100-word essay would win. Well, we have a winner.

Adam Carr, 11, of Tampa, Florida, created a patch showing Buzz soaring past the International Space Station that’s pretty unique. NASA has decided to make Adam’s design into a commemorative mission patch that’ll be flown into space on a future mission. After the mission, he’ll get the patch with a certificate from NASA and Disney Parks.

Adam says he dreams of one day becoming an astronaut and hopes his design will inspire others to reach for the stars. Congratulations, Adam.

Disney gave $550,000 to Florida politicians and political groups in 2009

Orlando Sentinel - Walt Disney World donated more than $407,000 to Florida politicians and political groups in 2009, according to updated state records.

In addition, the giant resort gave another $142,000 worth of freebies — hotel rooms, theme-park passes, meals and more — to candidates and causes during the year.

The combined total — just a hair under $550,000 — was about $110,000 more than Disney donated to Florida candidates in 2008. It was the most Disney has given since 2006, when the state was in the midst of open races for governor and two of three cabinet posts.  (The totals reflect donations to state-level candidates and groups only, and not contributions to candidates for offices such as U.S. Senate or local city and county councils.)

Disney was especially generous to the state Republican Party, which isn’t surprising since the GOP controls both the governor’s office and the state Legislature in Florida. Disney gave $205,000 in direct contributions to the Republican Party of Florida and about $52,000 more in freebies, or “in kind” donations.

Disney gave the state Democratic Party $55,000 in direct contributions and about $89,000 worth of in-kind contributions.

One of Disney’s largest single donations: $45,000 to the “Committee for Florida Justice Reform,” which seeks further restrictions on lawsuits. Disney has been lobbying state lawmakers to give parents the ability to waive their children’s liability rights before they participate in recreational activities. The Florida Supreme Court ruled in late 2008 that parents do not have that authority under current law.

Disney requires parents to sign such pre-injury releases before their children can ride horses or rent watercraft at the resort.

Fourth Disney ‘Pirates' movie to be filmed in Hawaii

HawaiiNewsNow – Pirates traditionally swoop in and make off with the booty. But Disney's Pirates are expected to bring as much as $85 million in spending to Hawaii and create hundreds of jobs.

A scene at the very end of the last Pirates movie is one of the few scenes shot in Hawaii. But production of the next Pirates flick will be based in O'ahu.

"Short term it's going to bring awful lot of people to Hawaii as they film the movie. Number two, think of the publicity Hawaii will receive when they're filming and then as it is released in 2011," State tourism liaison Marsha Wienert said.

"When a film comes, it's not just the people that work on the film that benefit. But the hotel industry, small mom and pop shops. Everyone from the top to the bottom, so we're very excited that Disney has made the decision to bring Pirates here to Hawaii," State Creative Industries Division Georja Skinner said

According to Governor Lingle Disney won't just be filming here, it'll be doing its post production work here as well.

"We're trying to build an industry of animation and video gaming and so on and to do that you need these big productions not to just wrap up filming and go back to California, but to do the post production work here, and I'm hopeful that this film is going to put us on that track," Lingle said.

Lingle says a lot of people worked very hard attracting the Pirates production. The promise of tax rebates, special hotel rates and other cost cutting incentives helped convince Disney to choose Hawaii over other locations. Just last month three of the five people working in the State Film Office were laid off victims of the state's budget crisis. But today the Creative Industries Division of the Department of Business and Economic Development says its renewed partnership with Disney is proof the state can still bring in big budget movies.

"With the reduction in the film office staff ... yes, it is a challenge. I mean there's no way around that. And our community, our production community really deserves a lot of accolades because big projects like this wouldn't even consider Hawaii regardless of how beautiful it is if we didn't have a quality production team behind us," Skinner said.

Disney has been filming in Hawaii since 1969 and has been such a good partner over the years it was given the "Film in Hawaii" award in 2001. The new Pirates' movie will be released in theatres during the summer of 2011.

HK Disneyland lifts lid on financial losses

Reuters - Disney's troubled Hong Kong Disneyland theme park made a net loss of HK$1.315 billion ($169.4 million last year while attracting 4.6 million visitors, in its first major admission of its financial performance since its opening in 2005.

Since opening to great fanfare, Disney's first magic kingdom in China has struggled to attract the expected flood of visitors from mainland China, although its performance had been difficult to gauge given Disney's initial refusal to fully disclose key results and attendance figures.

A paper by Hong Kong's Tourism Commission for local lawmakers, however, said Hong Kong Disneyland made the net loss in 2009 partly because of the "unfavorable impact" of the H1N1 swine flu outbreak and the global financial crisis.

The paper, released on Tuesday, added that the park made a net loss of HK$1.574 billion in 2008, while hotel occupancy rates stood at 70 percent in 2009, a drop of eight percent from 2008.

"We would like to point out that (Hong Kong Disneyland) is a long-term asset that grows over time and it is still in its early years of development," the paper said, while noting the park's continued cost containment efforts.

The Hong Kong government, however, which has a 52 percent stake in the park -- the Walt Disney Company (DIS.N) holds the other 48 percent -- expressed disappointment with the park's results, calling on it to improve.

"We are concerned about the situation and are dissatisfied with the financial performance (of Hong Kong Disneyland)," said Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Rita Lau.

The park saw 4.6 million visitors in 2009, 2 percent more than 2008, generating revenues of HK$2.541 billion.

Last year's attendance was lower than Disney's first-year attendance target of 5.6 million, which it just missed. After the park's expansion, however, the number of visitors is expected to swell to between 5.2 million-8 million visitors by 2015.

The park initially said it hoped to attract 10 million visitors per year after 15 years. With attendance falling short of targets, the government has been seeking ways to boost the number of visitors in the long term.

The theme park, Disney's smallest, is now undergoing a $468 million expansion aimed at bolstering its competitiveness with a rival Disneyland that is scheduled to open in Shanghai in the next five or six years.

As part of the expansion deal, partly financed by the Hong Kong government, Disney pledged to boost the transparency of its operations by releasing annual operating and financial results.

Tim Burton to Direct Sleeping Beauty Remake Maleficent?

/FILM - It bodes well for Alice in Wonderland that Disney are now reportedly lining up another revisionist re-take on one of their cartoon classics for Tim Burton to direct. Maleficent will be a retelling of the Sleeping Beauty story that focuses on the Mistress
of all Evil instead of that pretty somnambulist and her slightly creepy Prince Phillip.

The studio registered the domain name maleficentmovie.com some time last summer, so I’ve been waiting for news a while. Of course, until now I wasn’t entirely convinced it was going to be a live action picture - well, in so much as it will be live action, which I’m expecting will be probably to just the extent that Alice is - and not an animated spin-off, a la the Tinkerbell series or that Timon and Pumbaa picture.

One question is where this leaves Burton’s Dark Shadows, a film we had previously been told would shoot this year.

Producer Graham King told CHUD last week that there was not yet a finished Dark Shadows script. Seeing as there’s no scheduled release date for the picture, and that Johnny Depp could easily find another one of his nascent projects to slip into place, I’d think we’ll be on hold a while before Shadows goes before cameras.

Burton also has his Frankenweenie stop motion picture gearing up to go, but even if he doesn’t co-direct that one, as he did The Corpse Bride, the nature of animation should allow him energy and time to overlap some serious preproduction on another film.

The character of Maleficent is a Disney creation, the original storyline having an un-named evil fairy godmother. Since appearing in their Sleeping Beauty toon - in which she had some quite brilliantly grotesque sidekick-minions that I’d love to see in the Maleficent movie - she’s cropped up in the House of Mouse TV series and the Kingdom Hearts videogames, both times as the supreme evil mastermind behind the heroes’ and heroines’ suffering. Essentially, she’s the BIG Big Bad at Disney. As such, I’m not sure they’ll let the adult Maleficent be a sympathetic character and if she’s really going to be the film’s protagonist, I suspect we’ll have to go back in time a little, a la Wicked, and find out just why she’s grinding her axes.

I definitely hope we get to see Maleficent in her magnificent Dragon form. Smaug’s new master Guillermo del Toro has described this as one of his favorite dragons, and it isn’t hard to see why.

Here Comes ESPN To Xbox

Silicon Alley Insider - Microsoft (MSFT) and Disney (DIS) are in talks to bring live-streaming sporting events to Xbox Live, according to Brian Stelter of the New York Times.

This service would allow Xbox 360 users without cable to watch ESPN content through their gaming consoles.

No deal has yet been reached, and neither company has yet confirmed the report.

Still, this move fits in well with the overall strategy being pursued by all three major console makers: To turn gaming consoles into more generalized entertainment centers by building up (and monetizing) online networks.

This is a game that Microsoft is decidedly winning, and that Nintendo (NTDOY) is very badly losing, with Sony (SNE) in
more direct competition with Microsoft. While the news is being framed as the Xbox taking on cable providers, the home
console is clearly a very long way from being a serious threat to them.

In the console wars, however, this would be another huge win for Microsoft.

Disney Digital Books attract readers with click of mouse

Orlando Sentinel - Teaching children to read is a long process, and one key aspect is keeping them not only interested, but excited about it. That usually means trips to the library, Scholastic book orders from school, Bob Books, phonics games and even Leapfrog reading systems.

We’ve done all that for our 7-year-old and it’s working. He’s doing well with his reading and even has a favorite chapter-book
series now. I recently discovered Disney Digital Books, however, and I think that might take him to the next level because it combines reading with his love of technology.

Disney Digital Books is an online service that contains 500 new and classic Disney books with characters that appeal to most kids: classic Disney friends, those from current movies, Playhouse Disney characters and stars of popular Disney Channel tween shows. The books range from beginning look-and-listen stories for toddlers to books for developing readers to chapter books for more advanced readers. The system even has an easy-to-use dictionary feature, so kids can see and hear how to sound out unknown words.

Another cool feature is the story-builder option, in which children create their own Disney stories. Rewards, such as certificates and special online content, are revealed when children reach reading goals. Plus, parents can send encouraging messages to the child’s mailbox on the site. Readers can recommend books to friends, but the site does not allow chatting so parents can feel comfortable that children cannot share personal information online.

Disney Digital Books costs $8.95 for a monthly family subscription, or you can opt to save a little by paying $79.95 for a year. The site offers a free seven-day trial — no credit card is required but you do have limited access until a subscription is purchased.

What to do at Disney parks in the rain

OCRegister - It looks like rain is in the forecast all this week. The weather got so bad Monday that Disneyland Resort closed the parks early. But if you still plan to go to the parks, don’t let a bit of water rain on your parade.

We’ve compiled the top 10 ways to make the most of a Disney day in the rain.

10. Stay out of the rain and go for the indoor attractions. Some of our favorites at Disney’s California Adventure are Disney Animation, It’s Tough to Be A Bug and Soarin’ Over California. At Disneyland, we’d recommend the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean and Innoventions.

9. Grab a cup of coffee. There’s no better way to stay warm than with coffee. A cup at the Disneyland Resort costs $2.59. Want free coffee?

8. Watch the Aladdin Musical. The 45-minute, indoor show performs in the Hyperion Theater in Disney’s California Adventure, and will keep you out of the rain.

7. Wear a poncho. Ponchos are sold at many stores within the theme parks. Or, save money and buy a poncho at Target or Walmart before your trip.

6. Head for the E-ticket attractions. Believe it or not, most Southern Californians aren’t used to the rain, which means crowds will usually be light in the theme parks. This makes rainy days the prime time to ride the more popular attractions that usually generate long lines.

5. Bring an extra jacket or parka to sit on. Whether it’s a bench, the parking lot tram or the seat of the roller coaster, you’ll mostly be sitting on a wet surface. Avoid it by sitting on your jacket.

4. Check with employees to see what rides, attractions and shows are closed. Often, fireworks and parades are canceled during the rain, and likewise, rides like the Mad Tea Party are also closed.

3. Dine indoors. Some restaurants worth checking out, especially on rainy days, are the Blue Bayou, Ariel’s Grotto and Redd Rocket’s Pizza Port.

2. Warm up by the fireplace of the Grand Californian Hotel’s lobby. Oversized chairs will keep you cozy, or sit on the tile  ledge around the the fireplace to stay extra warm. Time it right, and you can enjoy the music of the piano player while sitting by the fireside.

1.Ride Grizzly River Run. This wild white-water rafting attraction (or any other water ride) is perfect for the rain. You’re already soaked, so you may as well keep that trend up by riding Grizzly River Run. Plus, the lines for water rides are usually nonexistent on rainy days.

Orlando Urban League names Disney's Braswell as new CEO

Orlando Sentinel - The Metropolitan Orlando Urban League announced Monday that Disney diversity manager and former Urban League board chairman Allie Braswell Jr. will be its new CEO, filling the void left by the departure of E. Lance McCarthy last May.

"I'm extremely excited. I'm extremely hopeful that this is an opportunity to contribute back to the community I really do believe in," said Braswell, 48, who is leaving his diversity-management job with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts to take over the struggling civil-rights organization.

Braswell, who has worked for Disney since 2003, brings to the job a background in information technology, corporate management and nonprofit work.

He said that when he takes over Feb. 1, his priority will be to work with the board of directors to re-establish the Urban League's credibility among financial supporters and members of the black community.

"The key priorities are to get a clear understanding of where we are financially and fiscally and put checks and balances in place to regain corporate support," he said.

In the past few years, the Urban League lost funding from United Way and saw its budget drop to $805,000 — about half what it was in 2006.

"A lot of people thought the doors were going to close. A lot of people said we weren't connected to the community," Braswell said. "We have a new image and message of a thriving Urban League in Central Florida."

The Orlando Urban League, created in 1977, provides employment assistance, educational and social services and job-training programs to low-income residents from its Pine Hills headquarters. It also assists minority-owned businesses and black professionals.

Board Chairman Michael Lewellen said Braswell was selected from more than 40 applicants because he possessed the best skills, talents and ideas to move the Urban League forward. He replaces McCarthy, who took over as CEO in 2004 only to see the recession scuttle many of his most ambitious plans.

"At this time, we really need an executive who is forward in his thinking — from the technology in the organization to how you go about developing programs and raising funds. These were areas of strength that Allie Braswell had," Lewellen said.

Braswell's selection was applauded by Ronald Rogers, board chairman of the African American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida. Braswell, who is from Oviedo, has the hometown roots to understand Central Florida, Rogers said.

"He will make a great CEO of the Urban League," Rogers said. "Allie has the community focus by being local, and he has the corporate experience coming from Disney — and he's been past chairman of the Urban League."

The Rev. Randolph Bracy Jr., president of the NAACP Orange Branch, said Braswell brings a "global" perspective to the job because he has lived and worked outside the Orlando area. Braswell moved back to Orlando in 2002 after working for a Washington firm. He also worked in Maryland and California.

Lewellen acknowledged that there has been much criticism of the Urban League, which some perceive as having lost touch with the community it serves. He said Braswell's leadership will answer those concerns.

"No one ever said they didn't think there is a purpose and role for the Urban League here in Orlando," Lewellen said. "There is a mutual feeling that Orlando must have an Urban League that thrives — thrives in terms of its resources, thrives in terms of its program delivery, and thrives in terms of its relevance to the community."

Gamers: Epcot is best Walt Disney World park for you

Orlando Sentinel - Today is the last day for Otronicon, the popular four-day video-game event at the Orlando Science
Center, and that prompted me to think about video games available year-round at Walt Disney World. There are quite a
few ways to experience interactive technology at the resort, but Epcot is by far the best Disney park for gamers.

Here’s a breakdown of what to look for, mostly in Future World:

Spaceship Earth – Project Tomorrow

**  Body Builder, a 3-D game in which guests build a digital human body.

**  Super Driver, a driving simulation video game. You drive a “smart-car” and try to stop the city from being destroyed.

**  Power City, a digital “shuffleboard-style” game that has guests racing around the board to power their city.

**  InnerVision, a coordination and reaction-time game with elements similar to Dance Dance Revolution.

Mission: Space – post-ride

**  Expedition: Mars, a joystick video game in which the player must find other  astronauts on Mars.

**  Two teams compete against each other in a race to send their rocket from Mars back to Earth.

Innoventions West

**  The Great Piggy Bank Adventure, teaches players the importance of saving money for future goals.

**  Video Games of Tomorrow, includes Finding Nemo, Kingdom Hearts II, Chicken Little, Cars and ESPN X Games.

Innoventions East

**  The Sum of All Thrills, custom-design your own roller coaster, bobsled or jet plane experience and then ride it.

** Don’t Waste It, guests recycle, reduce and reuse trash at three interactive stations.

Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure

**  This is a high-tech scavenger hunt , in which the players use GPS-enabled cell phones called Kimmunicators to get clues
among the nations.

My children, ages 5 and 7, have played just about all these games and really enjoy them. Did I leave out any of your family
favorites?

Miley Cyrus rep says Disney star is ‘not engaged’

Fashion - She may be wearing a sparkling new ring, but that apparently doesn’t mean she’s heading down the aisle.

Miley Cyrus is “not engaged,” a rep for the singer/actress tells People.com.

Reports such as the one at PopEater.com, which focused on a ring around the all-important finger on her left hand, suggested
that her 19-year-old beau, Liam Hemsworth, may have popped the question.

More speculation about the possible nuptials occurred when Cyrus met the Australian-born Hemsworth’s family during a trip
Down Under.

The pair met last year while filming the 17-year-old star’s most recent film, “The Last Song,” set to be released in April.

Disney quietly working on $1 billion-plus “next generation” technology project

Orlando Sentinel - The Walt Disney Co.’s theme-park division is quietly working on a major technology initiative that boosters hope could radically transform the theme-park experience.

Details of the project, which has been dubbed within Walt Disney Parks and Resorts as “next generation experience” or “NextGen,” are being closely guarded. But there is widespread speculation among former Disney executives and bloggers who follow the company that at least part of the project involves wireless-communication technology that could be used in concepts ranging from keyless hotel-room doors to rides and shows in which the experience varies based on an individual guest’s preferences.

The budget for the program totals between $1 billion and $1.5 billion, according to former Disney parks executives who spoke only on the condition that they not be identified. The amount is roughly comparable to what Disney is spending to build a pair of 4,000-passenger cruise ships.

Just before Christmas, Disney assigned oversight of the project to Nick Franklin, the head of global business and real-estate development for the company’s theme-park unit. Franklin’s newest title is “executive vice president of next generation experience.” At Walt Disney World, the project is being led by Jim MacPhee, a vice president who once ran the Epcot theme park. MacPhee’s title was changed last month to vice president of park operations and next generation experience.

Disney would not discuss specifics of the project. “Our company has a long history of leveraging technology to enhance the experience of our guests, and we are constantly exploring new opportunities to build on that legacy,” spokeswoman Tasia Filippatos said.

Though Disney typically keeps a tight lid on projects in development, the strict silence surrounding the NextGen initiative has surprised some company veterans. Disney has required employees assigned to the project — “several dozen” people are currently working on it, according to one of the former executives — to sign confidentiality agreements forbidding them from discussing their work, even with colleagues.

One former Disney manager described the climate surrounding the project as “super quiet.” Yet another likened the hush-hush atmosphere to the silence that surrounded the development of Disney’s Magical Express, the airport shuttle-and-luggage service introduced in Orlando in 2005.

“Usually you hear a lot of different things leak out,” added Michael Crawford, publisher of Progress City USA, a Web site devoted to Disney. “This has been really locked up.”

Several other people in and around Disney said they are aware of the NextGen initiative. But all said they were either unfamiliar with details or that they could not discuss them.

The secrecy, of course, hasn’t stopped speculation. Though the “NextGen” work has multiple components, several Disney bloggers, including Crawford, have reported that a key part involves the development of radio-frequency identification microchips that could be implanted into park passes or wrist bands. Guests would supply personal information ahead of their arrival — from their names and credit-card numbers to their favorite Disney characters — that would be downloaded onto the RFID microchips, which would then interact with sensors deployed throughout Disney’s resorts.

Disney has discussed the technology with Precision Dynamics Corp., a San Fernando, Calif.-based company that manufactures RFID wristbands. A representative for the company said he could not elaborate on those talks because Precision Dynamics has signed a non-disclosure agreement with Disney.

RFID technology has “certainly been on Disney’s radar as well as the other major [tourism] players in the Orlando area,” said Tom Foster, sales manager for Precision Dynamics’ RFID solutions group.

Crawford said he has been told that Disney’s work includes what is being called a “personal experience portal,” which he thinks could be the online site that guests would use to provide personal details and preferences. The blogger noted that posts he has written in recent months on Disney’s RFID efforts have attracted unusually heavy Internet traffic from IP addresses associated with Disney offices in Orlando and California.

RFID technology is already used in many areas of everyday life, from the contact-information chips that pet owners have implanted in their dogs and cats to the bracelets that hospitals use to track patients and their treatments. The technology is spreading through the amusement industry, too.

Indoor-waterpark operator Great Wolf Resorts now uses RFID wristbands manufactured by Precision Dynamics at seven of its 12 resorts in the U.S. and Canada. The wristbands function both as hotel-room keys and personal charge cards for guests, allowing them to buy food and souvenirs without carrying a credit card or cash.

“Given this new technology, guests who otherwise may not have wanted to go all the way back to their room for their credit card or cash and be inconvenienced may now be making purchases due to the added convenience of having their wallet on their wrist,” said Rajiv Castellino, chief information officer for Great Wolf Resorts. “The ease of use and convenience have proven to be big hits with guests at our properties.”

Though Disney is also interested in both keyless hotel entry and cashless transactions, its full RFID plans are said to be more ambitious.

Former employees and bloggers say Disney is looking at using RFID sensors in attractions, so that experiences could be tailored based on individual guest preferences. For example, as guests wander around a park or advance through a ride, their favorite animated character might appear and address them by name.

Another goal, according to the former Disney managers, is to greatly reduce or eliminate lengthy wait times at popular attractions — waits that can top three hours on particularly busy days and which a current Disney World executive said are routinely cited as a “key negative” by guests who visit the resort. One possibility is to allow guests to select preferred ride and show times and then use RFID scanners at attraction entrances to verify that they are showing up at the correct time.

RIFD tracking could also give Disney much more detailed data about its guests’ spending habits and movements, which could in turn be a powerful sales tool. Disney might be able to tell, for instance, that a family wandering one of its theme parks in the evening has no dinner reservations, and so could contact the family by cell phone to suggest nearby restaurants with available seats or promotions.

“The back story of this is they’re going to be able to track everything you’re doing,” said Al Lutz, editor of MiceAge.com and someone who also has written about Disney’s RFID development efforts.

The project isn’t without risks. Some former employees have expressed skepticism about whether the technological advances would do enough to boost attendance or guest spending at Disney’s theme parks to justify the $1 billion-plus price tag — or whether such money would be better spent on projects such as new resorts or attractions.

Disney also faces questions about whether guests would want to put so much thought into planning their vacations — and how such advance planning by some guests might affect others who could conceivably miss out on a popular attraction because time slots have been reserved ahead of time by those who planned.

Even eliminating attraction lines could be tricky: A theme park could actually feel more crowded if a certain percentage of people were no longer spending time waiting in ride queues.

Although Disney would not discuss its NextGen concepts, the company has said improvements to its guests’ vacation experience will lead to bottom-line gains, because happier customers are more apt to make return trips. There can be other advantages, as well: After launching its Fast Pass ride-reservation system in 1999, for instance, Disney said guest spending in its parks rose as guests spent less time in queues and more in shops and restaurants.

Disney date turns into growing career

The Flint Journal - Dan Lauber’s first foray into the future of farming happened when he was living in Orlando, Fla., and
dating “Cinderella,” or rather a woman who played her at Disney World.

The two were on an EPCOT Center tour of soil-free hydroponics farming when, noticing his curiosity, she offered to
take Lauber behind the scenes to hang out with botanists and researchers.

Today, he’s the sole proprietor of Michigan Hydroponics, a new business focused on the growing movement to raise plants
indoors without soil. It opened in November on Miller Road in the Ross Plaza.

“I’m trying to show people that this has a real-world application. It’s not just growing pot in your closet,” says Lauber, 32, a
Flint Township native.

The practice is actually thousands of years old; early examples of hydroponics include the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and
The Floating Gardens of China, he says. In the new world, NASA uses hydroponics growing in its space program.

Today, the medical marijuana movement has helped elevate the profile of hydroponics. Lauber estimates 60 percent of the
business comes from this use. But that still leaves 40 percent who simply want to grow fresh veggies, flowers and plants to
eat and enjoy.

To reach a wider audience, Lauber is networking and cross-marketing with other local groups, including Habitat for Humanity,
the Michigan Food Bank, the Flint Farmers Market, and other related growers and food vendors.

The son of a Flint Farmers Market merchant and Genesee County radiologist, Lauber started working on Michigan tree
farms during high school.

After attending Carman-Ainsworth, the 1996 graduate studied digital media in Florida and completed his design degree at
the Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids.

Lauber then knocked around, living in a variety of cities nationwide before returning to Flint to become “an entrepreneur type
of guy.” Living in Denver, where he worked for a cable TV company, he noticed “grow shops” on almost every other
corner, he said. “Every city I’ve been in has had an indoor gardening shop.”

The benefits of soil-free growing include 30 percent faster growth over soil-based plants, better use of space and lower
energy needs. The use of fewer chemicals and pesticides makes fruits and vegetables taste better, too. In cold-weather
states, many people like to start plants indoors and then transfer them outside when the weather warms.

Lauber’s efficiency-sized storefront and workroom are filled with units and supplies that make that happen. In the Flint area,
he is the only authorized retailer of Hydrofarm products, one of the largest U.S. dealers in the trade. He sells the company’s
florescent lights and lines of water-soluble plant nutrients. He also designs, builds and sells growing and cloning units.

The store is filled with plastic five-gallon buckets — rigged up with water irrigation systems — and larger growing units
made of PVC piping that drip or spray water on small containers of sprouting plants.

The principle is this: By continuously and lightly spritzing plants with nutrient-spiked water, the system focuses the plant’s
energy into sprouting its fruits and leaves, not creating deep roots that shoot through the ground.

At least two Genesee County growers have successfully used hydroponic systems for growing strawberries and other
plants outdoors, said horticulture educator Terry McLean of the Michigan State University Extension Service in Genesee
County.

“There’s always been a certain amount of interest in hydroponics. But I concur there seems to be a growing interest in it,”
McLean said. “Hydroponics allows for a pretty unique use of space.”
