Girl, 11,
Mistakenly Left At Disney's Epcot Local6 - An 11-year-old girl mistakenly left behind during a field trip has prompted an investigation. The girl was visiting Orlando with a group from 21st Century Community Learning in Lakeland when she was left at the park. A program manager said the
special-needs student was left behind when the children were
forced to unload one bus and reload in a different area before
leaving Epcot. The girl was alone at Epcot for about three hours before park officials located her. She's back home with her family Thursday.Charges could be filed in the case. |

Disney chief asked about Contemporary time share Orlando Sentinel - Word of the new tower that Disney Vacation Club is building next to the Contemporary Resort has clearly reached Wall Street.
During the Walt Disney Co.'s
third-quarter earnings call yesterday afternoon, analyst
Richard Greenfield of Pali Capital asked executives about
the "new Disney Vacation Club supposedly being opened up
shortly next to the Contemporary."
Not surprisingly, Disney CEO Bob Iger didn't take the bait, saying only that Disney is focused on selling the currently available time shares in the Animal Kingdom Lodge. (Disney still has yet to announce its plans for the Contemporary tower, though it has already applied for -- and received -- approval to sell time shares out of it under the resort name "Bay Lake Tower.") Here's Iger's full response: "The focus right now on the Vacation Clubs is in selling the Animal Kingdom property -- both the conversion of the Vacation Clubs in the Animal Kingdom hotel, as well as the additional Vacation Club units that we're creating in a new building structure adjacent to that hotel. And therefore the focus is on selling that. And that's why we've made no other announcements, nor have we put any other new Vacation properties online, meaning for sale." One other DVC note from the call: Disney CFO Tom Staggs said Vacation Club units sold during the third quarter at about the same pace as a year ago. "They had nice sales, but they were about on par with the prior year," he said. |

Doesn't Hit It Out of the Theme Park Motley Fool - Wall Street still hasn't come up with the kind of mousetrap that can catch Mickey Mouse, but it's getting close on the blueprints. Disney (NYSE: DIS) once again topped Wall Street's profit targets -- something that shareholders have come to expect under CEO Bob Iger -- but the family entertainment giant didn't exactly hit it out of the theme park. Operating profits mirrored the meager 2% revenue advance. Attendance fell at the company's stateside attractions. The company's studio entertainment division fell way short of last year's high bar. Operating profits at the broadcasting division fell, but it was ultimately saved by the robust performance of Disney's cable properties. In short, it was a mixed bag. Reported earnings clocked in at $0.66 a share, but then investors have to back out one-time gains that include the sale of movies.com to Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), the purchase of Disney Stores from Children's Place (Nasdaq: PLCE), and a favorable resolution of outstanding tax items. Without that, Disney would have earned just $0.62 a share. It is better than the $0.61-a-share profit that analysts were expecting, but Disney doesn't usually win just by the skin of Goofy's teeth. It's typically been a blowout. Three months ago, Wall Street was looking for a fiscal second-quarter profit of $0.51 a share and Disney delivered $0.58 a share. The quarter before that, it was the media giant turning a profit of $0.63 a share, flying past Mr. Market's $0.52-a-share guesstimate. Everyone knew that Disney's studio would be roughed up, bumping up against last year's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. However, did anyone expect attendance at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World to come in lower? Disney faults the shift in the Easter holiday from April in 2007 to March in 2008, but perhaps the assumption that international tourists taking advantage of the falling dollar would offset flagging domestic demand is flawed. if it figures that it will help offset the stateside weakness. It probably doesn't help that Nickelodeon parent Viacom (NYSE: VIA) reported healthier growth this week, actually growing in areas like video games and studio production where Disney took a step back. This doesn't mean that investors should bail on Disney. The stock is too cheap, priced at just 14 times what analysts believe the company will earn this fiscal year. That may be a higher multiple than what media titans like Viacom, Time Warner (NYSE: TWX), and CBS (NYSE: CBS) are fetching, but Disney remains the undisputed family entertainment giant. If Disney is still managing to inch higher in these trying times, just imagine what it can do when consumers start spending again. |

What Disney Really Wants to Tell Shareholders About: Miley Cyrus The Business Sheet - Disney is over the moon about Miley Cyrus (apart from those nude photos). Her Hannah Montana TV show is a hit, and she's posting huge album sales through Disney-owned Hollywood Records. But the Miley mania on display during Wednesday's earnings call hit a fever pitch. First, Disney CEO Bob Iger said Miley sold 371 million albums last week...before CFO Tom Staggs quickly corrected him. (It was 371,000.) Then, after the call was over, the audio feed was replaced by 30 seconds of the song "These Four Walls" from Miley's new album. It's common to have a label's music piped over the telephone when you're on hold, but not on a conference call for a multimedia conglomerate. Nice product placement! |

Disney only tours to add attractions The Standard - Mainland tourists on special "Disney visas" are to be given the option of visiting other Hong Kong attractions during their stay in the city. The move comes after criticism of the original plan, which was to allow up to eight million non-Guangdong residents who work in Shenzhen to come to Disney only. The Hong Kong arm of state-owned China Travel Service says visitors will be taken to the Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai, Repulse Bay and Deep Water Bay. China Travel's assistant general manager Wang Fugang told The Standard the expanded tour was likely to cover five to six attractions and shopping hot spots during their short stay. He said tourists can visit other places on subsequent visits."To include too many attractions would be too expensive for workers," said Wang. Tour prices would depend on how much money different groups had to spend but Wang insisted there would be no "zero-fee tours" - where money is made by directing tourists to certain shops - to ensure a high quality of service. China Travel Service will be the first agency to host the tours. Wang said the addition of Ngong Ping 360 to the itinerary has still to be discussed. A source said Ocean Park has contacted China Travel Service on being added to the itinerary after its chairman Allan Zeman on Wednesday hit out at the deal as being a "wrong decision." Wang said Ocean Park will be included in the itinerary after the scheme's initial implementation. |

Machu Picchu with Mickey?
The New York Times - When Karen Gammiere heard that the Walt Disney Co. had started offering guided tours to places like Peru and China, the San Diego mother of two was skeptical. She didn't want to arrive at the Great Wall of China to find Winnie the Pooh shaking her hand. "Shudder," she said. Still, Gammiere decided to risk it after reading glowing online reports, booking a nine-day Disney tour called Viva Italia that would take the family to Rome, Florence and Venice. The verdict: "We loved everything about it and so did the kids," she gushed, citing adults-only wine tastings and first-class Eurostar train seats. "And I never once saw a costumed character," she said. Restraint and sophistication are not words that you would typically use to describe a Disney vacation. In fact, the company has built its $10.6 billion theme park, hotel and cruise empire around the opposite. Pass through the gates of the Happiest Place on Earth and you're encouraged to eat fudge, hug Goofy and wear mouse ears. All that sweetness is great — an estimated 117 million customers lapped it up at Disney resorts last year — but the company realized a few years ago that it was missing a vast pool of potential customers. Jay Rasulo, the chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, says the idea is to "take the magic on the road." In other words, apply some of the company's hallmarks — exceptional customer service, an emphasis on storytelling and safety — to the guided tour market. Evolving with the traveling public has always been part of Disney's approach to the vacation business. In the 1950s, Disneyland tapped the nuclear family going on vacation in their new cars. Florida's Walt Disney World, built in the 1970s and 1980s, was about the flying vacation. Then came the hugely popular Disney Cruise Line in the 1990s. Now, with participatory vacations booming and the Internet making international travel less daunting, the company is trying to expand again. Adventures by Disney is designed to take families to places they might be too timid to visit on their own — without loading on the schmaltz. Hiking Machu Picchu with an 8-year-old would be daunting for most travelers. With Disney promising to handle everything, it might seem doable. Southern California residents Linda and Steve Heck recently booked a Disney tour to Italy for just that reason. They wanted to treat their granddaughter, age 13, to a summer vacation but worried they wouldn't know how to entertain her for nine days in a foreign country. "My husband and I don't want to get to Italy with a 13-year-old and be looking at each other and thinking, '"Great, now what do we do?' " Linda Heck said. The strong response to Adventures by Disney has caught the company by surprise because it has relied mainly on word-of-mouth marketing. The company dipped its toe in the business in 2005 with two itineraries. In 2008, it booked 17 itineraries in 13 countries, with a total of 370 scheduled tours of up to 40 people each. For 2009, Disney will add eight tours, including one to Africa. Age requirements vary, but most tours accept travelers age 4 to 94. The push is risky for Disney because its vacation business has always turned on fantasy and on maintaining utter control. But guided tours are about reality. Moreover, the Mouseketeers for the first time have to rely on outside vendors. (The project's code name was OPI, for Other People's Infrastructure.) This is a company whose reputation relies on its family friendliness, after all. What happens if the bus happens to drive by a nude beach? The company, which has long endured criticism about pushing itself on other cultures, could also set its international efforts back if it comes across as disrespectful. "It quickly went from a brainstorming session to an oh-my-god-what-have-we-gotten-ourselves-into moment," said Bruce Vaughn, chief creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, the company's research and development arm. Family adventure travel is nothing new, but Disney thinks it can compete by drawing on its resources to provide unique excursions. For instance, a tour of California stops in Hollywood for an exploration of Jim Henson's studio, home to ''The Muppets" and otherwise off limits to the public. In London, guests go backstage at the West End production of ''The Lion King." Travel agents say the company is also bringing a degree of comfort and attention to detail that is missing from most family tours. Each day, guides surreptitiously take photos of families enjoying activities and slide copies under their hotel room doors during the night. Ice is carted around in Europe to make up for restaurants that lack it. After river rafting in Peru, guides surprise guests with hot chocolate and a warm towel. "What I liked is that I didn't have to be the mom on this trip," Gammiere said, citing an evening where the kids watched a movie and the adults went to a wine tasting. As you might imagine, little is left to chance. Each itinerary is tested three times by guides and then Disney stages ''dress rehearsals" using employees as guinea pigs. Heather Killingbeck, director of trip and program development, said trial runs are used to teach local contractors that Disney standards are not flexible. "Sometimes they don't understand that 45 minutes means 45 minutes," she said. While Disney characters do not populate the tours, the company relies heavily on what it calls ''local storytellers." For instance, in Venice the Disney tour guide might say, ''Some people believe that you can even see the ghost of Marco Polo wandering these streets." Around the next corner, Marco Polo, a local actor in historical garb, awaits. There are still kinks. One media executive who took his family on the China trip called it ''Mao's long march," complaining that it covered too much ground. Disney, which has since tweaked the China itinerary, has also learned not to over-promise in brochures. "The opportunity to wander a vast glacier frozen in time" on the Canadian Rockies tour, turned out to be, in one customer's words, "more like the chance to look at a dirty patch of snow." The tour has since been canceled. Karolee Glassman said she sought out the tours because the family was outgrowing Disney's theme parks. ''We would go as each grandchild hit 3 or 4, but we haven't gone as much in recent years," she said. The company certainly has her business back: Glassman, 70, and her husband Sandy, 85, have booked upcoming tours for their extended family to Italy and Ireland. In March, the New Jersey couple went on a Disney tour to Costa Rica, where they painted gourds with local artists, soaked in volcanic hot springs and soared through the rain forest on a zip line. "Nothing screamed Disney but the service," Glassman said, "which was marvelous." |

Spidey director and Disney team for superhero comedy Reuters - Sam Raimi, the director of Sony's "Spider-Man" films, is going Disney for the first time. The studio has picked up "The Transplants," an action-adventure described as a superhero story with a comedic bent. The project was pitched by scribes Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson, who are best known for "Not Another Teen Movie." Raimi is known more for his horror fare and "Spider-Man" movies, not to mention his comedic sensibilities that attract the geek audience. Disney, on the other hand, isn't exactly known for its edge, with fare that plays fairly broad. Still, a few projects and names pop from the Disney slate, such as the Bruce Willis sci-fi actioner "Surrogates" and the Tim Burton-directed "Alice in Wonderland," which is sure to attract literary hipsters as much as families. |

Disney offers to refinance Hong Kong Disneyland loan Reuters - The Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) has offered to refinance more than $300 million in commercial loans due on Sept. 30 for its Hong Kong Disneyland joint venture, but has met with resistance from its partner, the Hong Kong government, a Disney spokesman said on Wednesday. In a financial filing on Wednesday, Disney disclosed that it has been in talks with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region over financing arrangements to allow its newest park to pay off the commercial loans of about $329 million. In talks with the Hong Kong government, Disney "has expressed its willingness to replace the facilities with loans from the company" and "to provide additional investment" in the park, which has been criticized as too small to draw long-term stays and repeat business. But Disney has not reached an agreement with the joint venture to resolve the loan, raising the possibility that the joint venture would turn instead to a tight commercial credit market for potentially onerous terms and saddling the company with potentially unfavorable financial disclosures. The company was "disappointed that both shareholders in the joint venture hadn't yet been able to reach an agreement," Disney spokesman Jonathan Friedland said. Disney believed its loan offer would give the joint venture "financial breathing room" needed to maintain the Hong Kong park's recent operational gains and set it on a firm financial footing, Friedland said. "We are totally confident and committed to the continued growth of Hong Kong Disneyland as a premiere tourist destination in the region, demonstrated by the company's offer to assume the loan," he said. Last year, the joint venture was forced to amend its loan agreements after the Hong Kong park failed to meet semi-annual performance targets. The amended agreement removed the performance targets and decreased the amount of a revolving credit facility but also shortened the loan due date to Sept. 30, 2008, from Oct. 15, 2015. As part of that amendment, Disney waived management fees and deferred royalties for fiscal 2008 and 2009 to support the park, whose attendance has lagged expectations since its 2005 opening. The 310-acre (126-hectare) park is expandable to a total of 457 acres (185 hectares) to accommodate future phases, according to Disney. The Hong Kong government, which owns 57 percent of the park, has taken political heat for the park's missed attendance target and has branded its performance as "unsatisfactory." The park became the sole beneficiary this week of an easy-visa arrangement that could bring millions of visitors from mainland China who are not normally qualified to visit Hong Kong. |

Red Sox official makes ‘exploratory’ visit to Disney sports
complex News-Press - A Boston Red Sox official made an exploratory visit to Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista. Red Sox chief operating officer Mike Dee toured the complex earlier this month with Ken Potrock, senior vice president of Disney Sports Enterprises. “He went out there on a family vacation,” John Blake, Red Sox vice president of media relations, said of Dee’s visit. “It was really more exploratory more than anything else. He said it’s not that big of a deal.” Dee has grown tired of commenting on Boston’s possible search for a new spring training home, Blake said. “You could call it exploratory,” Blake said. “But really, that was all he had to say. Their eyes are open to exploring different options.” Sarasota County has been trying to work a deal to lure Boston to replace the Cincinnati Reds, who have one more year in that city’s Ed Smith Stadium before they move into a new, $109 million complex in Goodyear, Ariz. Lee County deputy manager Bill Hammond said Dee’s visit did not trouble him. “We have a great relationship,” Hammond said. “It’s a gorgeous facility. “He’s thinking about all of these different facilities. I would have toured the facility, too, if I were up there.” Potrock said through a Disney spokesman that he would not comment on any specific teams but that Disney was always looking to add business. The Red
Sox have trained in Fort Myers since 1993 and have a lease with
Lee County that runs through 2019. The Red Sox have an escape
clause that will kick in after 2009 spring training. They can
get out of their lease by paying a $1 million fee next year.
That fee then drops $100,000 per year for the remainder of the
contract. |

Disney Preps Additional Phineas and Ferb Episodes
Phineas and Ferb, which premiered in February, ranks as the number one animated series in the U.S. among 6- to 11-year-olds and 9- to 14-year-olds. The comedy is one of Disney Channel's top ten series among key kid demographics in most territories, and among the top five in 12 territories. In the first quarter of 2008, the show ranked number one in its primary time period in Australia, Italy and Canada. The series centers on Phineas Flynn and his stepbrother Ferb Fletcher who set out to make every day of their summer vacation count. Their sister plots to get them into trouble while the family's pet, Perry the Platypus, leads a secret life as Agent P. The show, a production of Walt Disney Television Animation, was created by Dan Povenmire (Family Guy) and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh (The Simpsons, Rocko's Modern Life) and is executive-produced by Povenmire and co-executive produced by Marsh. Gary Marsh, the president of entertainment for Disney Channels Worldwide, said: "We're thrilled with Phineas and Ferb—critically and creatively—and what's especially gratifying is that kids and parents alike are rejoicing in its brilliant slapstick comedy and smart, relatable storytelling. The series fully celebrates the art form of animation, and Dan and Swampy have created pure, honest to goodness playfulness in every episode." |

Depp in the frame for Mad Hatter role guardian - The internet is rife with rumors that Johnny Depp will appear as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. According to Empire Online, there has also been talk of it at Pinewood Studios, where Alice is to be shot, and where Depp and Burton worked on Sweeney Todd and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. If true, it would be the seventh collaboration between the two. The film's backer, Disney, has not confirmed Depp's involvement. When it comes to this self-indulgence on set, it's hard to beat Thai superstar Tony Jaa. The martial arts actor was directing and starring in his new martial arts epic, Ong Bak 2, but, in the middle of filming, decided to disappear into the jungle and meditate for two months. He showed up again this week to appear on a local Thai chat show. His excuse? He was pursuing "his artistic quest". The film's producers aren't too thrilled to have bankrolled the creative endeavor, claiming Jaa massively overspent his budget. |

Boxing Promoter Don King Loses Libel Suit Against Disney, ESPN Bloomberg - Boxing promoter Don King lost a libel lawsuit he filed against Walt Disney Co. and its all- sports television unit, ESPN, in which he sought $2.5 billion in damages. King failed to show ESPN producers acted with malice or that statements from the 2004 broadcasts the promoter deemed defamatory -- including one sports writer's comment that King had threatened to kill him -- were ``subjectively incorrect,'' a Florida state court judge said in a July 28 decision. ``While ESPN could have perhaps done a more searching investigation and contacted additional sources,'' Judge Robert A. Rosenberg wrote, ``it was not reasonably required to continue its investigation until it found somebody who would defend the plaintiffs.'' King, who has promoted fights by heavyweight boxing champions Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson and others, and his business, Don King Productions, sued the companies in 2005, claiming the installment of ESPN's Sports Century series in which he was featured was ``highly defamatory and reckless.'' ``The opinion speaks for itself,'' defense attorney Jim Quinn of New York-based Weil Gotshal said in a phone interview today. Disney, based in Burbank, California, and its subsidiary stood by the remarks made in the broadcast, Quinn said. ``He didn't prove falsity.'' King was represented by Willie E. Gary's law firm in Stuart, Florida. King will appeal, said one of his lawyers, Tricia ``CK'' Hoffler, a partner with Gary. ``Definitely the fight has just begun,'' she said. The TV broadcasts showed King in a false light, Hoffler said. ``They did a hatchet job on Don King,'' she said. The case is Don King Productions and Don King v. The Walt Disney Co., 05-000524, Circuit Court for the 17th Judicial Circuit at Broward County, Florida. |

UTV-Disney combine set to pip B K Modi Economic Times - There's yet another twist in the seemingly endless saga of the minority Indian shareholders of Sony Entertainment Television (SET), now called Multi Screen Media (MSM). The minority shareholders, who hold a 32% stake in MSM, had earlier reached an agreement to sell their stake to billionaire-industrialist B K Modi. However, the future of that agreement is now in some doubt. A person familiar with the matter told ET the exclusivity period for that deal had expired without the transaction taking place. Instead, other potential buyers have made an appearance. It is learnt that Indian entertainment company UTV, along with Disney, is in discussion with Sony Pictures Entertainment, the majority shareholder, to see if they could buy the 32% stake. The prospective buyers already have had their first round of discussions with Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and chief executive Michael Lynton in Los Angeles, a person well informed about the issue told ET on condition of anonymity. It is learnt that UTV-Disney have valued SET at $700 million. UTV chairman and CEO Ronnie Screwvala, along with Disney representatives, is currently trying to determine the working relationship that the three companies will share, if UTV and Disney jointly buy the 32% owned by the Indian promoters. So long, Sony Pictures Entertainment—which owns 62% (some 6% is held by private equity investors) in the company—has been calling all the shots as far as the management of SET is concerned. The minority shareholders will be made an offer only if all this is sorted out, a UTV-Disney insider said. The person also informed ET that Sony Pictures and the Indian promoters seem to have disagreements over the proposed deal with Mr BK Modi and hence the transaction seems to have stalled. The backing of Disney could help UTV raise the money in case the deal is struck. For Disney, the move will give it a much larger play in India with access to both the Sony bouquet as well as the UTV bouquet. An email questionnaire sent to Sony Pictures Television International senior vice-president, corporate communications, Ron Sato only garnered a “no comment” response. MSM CEO Kunal Dasgupta also declined to comment on the development. When contacted, Mr Modi said he did not wish to comment. So did Mr Screwvala: “We do not comment on market speculation.” The minority shareholders were in advanced negotiation to sell 32% stake to the BK Modi group for about $320-350 million. Mr Modi was looking at buying out the Indian shareholders who have been looking for an exit for several years now. These shareholders include Shemaroo Entertainment MD Raman Maroo, Singapore-based NRI Rakesh Agarwal, World Media Group director Sudesh Iyer, MobiApps Holding’s Jayesh Paresh and actor Jackie Shroff. Over the last two years, the minority Indian promoters have been struggling to rope in a buyer to ensure their exit. However various proposed deals with several investors had fallen through either on issues of valuation or the lack of an exit option for the new investor. |

Disney announces 5 million movies sold via iTunes MacNN - During a conference call for the company's Q3 2008 results, Bob Iger, president of the Walt Disney Corporation, has announced that since agreeing to sell movies through the iTunes Store, the company has sold over five million titles. Iger insists however that the presence of Apple CEO Steve Jobs on the board of directors has not influenced any decisions on content distribution. "Some of our agreements were signed before the purchase of Pixar," says Iger.
Before the studio was absorbed by
Disney, Jobs was at one point the chairman and CEO of Pixar. The
company's short films have also been some of the first to appear
in iTunes video libraries, before even the general availability
of movies and TV shows. |

Disney magic for Rachel
Rachel
Wilson, who recently graduated with first class honors in
management from Lancaster University, has already worked and
studied in Texas, London and the Philippines and in October
she is set to make the move stateside. Working for Disney in Florida will also see her study for a Masters in People Management from the University of Central Florida. But despite being barely out of her teens, Rachel, who studied at the Hayfield School, is mindful of further developing her promising career. Talking about her time at university Rachel said: "I managed to meet people from all over the world and I built a multitude of practical and theoretical skills from the study and the work experience. "Overall, I can say this experience has been invaluable." Sue Cox, the dean of the management school at Lancaster University said: "We are delighted with Rachel's result. This is an excellent performance and a reward for her hard work. The skills she has developed will be very much in demand as she progresses through her career." |

Disney says 3Q profits jump 9 pct to $1.28 billion AP - The Walt Disney Co. says its third-quarter profits surged nearly 9 percent thanks to revenue growth at ESPN and strong results from its theme park near Paris, where the weak U.S. dollar was helpful. The family entertainment company said Wednesday that its net profit grew to $1.28 billion in the quarter ending in June, up from $1.18 billion a year ago. Revenue grew 2 percent to $9.24 billion. Earnings per share from continuing operations were 66 cents, up from 58 cents a year ago. The results beat analysts expectations. They forecast 1 percent revenue growth to $9.14 billion and a 5 percent increase in earnings per share to 61 cents, according to a survey by Thomson Financial. |

Miley Starts
the 'Bolt Across America'
Disney News - Miley Cyrus helped launch "Bolt Across America," a fundraising adventure inspired by Walt Disney Pictures' upcoming film Bolt. Cyrus, who provides the voice of Penny in the film, revealed details about the cross-country journey four "Bolters" are about to tackle in an effort to raise money for the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), the nation's leading animal welfare organization. "In
the movie, my character's dog Bolt befriends a little
hamster who gets around in a ball — so we've recruited four
"Bolters" to make like hamsters and roll through cities
coast to coast in a giant hamster ball to raise money for
the ASPCA," Cyrus said. "I have always been an animal lover
and I am a huge believer in what the ASPCA does to help make
a difference for animals in need."
"The20ASPCA is proud to be
associated with the 'Bolt Across America' tour and we
are excited to give people across the country another
way to help animals in need," said Ed Sayres, ASPCA
President and CEO, says.
Four "Bolters" were
tapped to board a giant, human-sized hamster ball
inspired by the movie. The "Bolters" will travel
from city to city tackling tasks — from rolling
through a car wash to watching a drive-in (roll-in)
movie. The team will raise money for the ASPCA by
encouraging people nationwide to pledge dollars via
the ASPCA link found on the Bolt Web site
Disney.com/BOLT.
Those who donate will get a special inside-look at
the "Bolt Across America" adventure with videos and
other bonus materials.
The "Bolt Across
America," team includes Raquel Baldwin, Ted
Beam, Tiffany Phillips and Clayton Ferguson. The
"Bolters" are scheduled to roll through Boston
next week and will hit Philadelphia, Washington
D.C., Chicago, Denver and Phoenix, among others.
The journey culminates in a roll down the red
carpet at the film's L.A. premiere Nov. 19,
2008.

Wall-E Will
Lift Disney
Forbes - Wall Street, meet Wall-E. Thanks in part to the success of Pixar Animation Studio’s Wall-E, a robot love story, Walt Disney should beat Wall Street estimates when it releases third-quarter earnings on Wednesday. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters forecast earnings of 61 cents per share on revenue of $9.1 billion for the period through June. Last quarter, Walt Disney (nyse: DIS) reported better-than-expected results due to strong performances in its film, broadcasting, and theme-park units, including strong international sales of shows like "Grey’s Anatomy," "Lost," and "Dirty Sexy Money." (See "Disney's Magic Kingdom Of Profit") While analysts expect growth to continue in film and broadcasting, theme park revenue should be down due to the calendar shift of the Easter holiday from the third quarter of 2007 to second quarter of this year. Disney’s Media Networks division had a mixed third quarter. Its cable division should show growth, thanks to high NBA playoff ratings that led to a strong performance at ESPN. Viewership of ABC Family, Disney’s third-largest ad revenue generator, increased by 18 percent. The company’s broadcasting unit stumbled, however, in the third quarter. The writers’ strike led to a 15 percent drop in average primetime ratings among adults 18-49. Because of the strike, the network has fewer episodes of Lost, Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, and Brothers and Sisters to put into syndication, and ABC Studios should show modest decline due to lower international syndication revenues. Despite the success of Pixar’s Wall-E, which was the ninth straight number one launch for a Pixar Studio film, Oppenheimer analyst Jason Helfstein expects the company’s film division to report its weakest quarter of the year. High print s and advertising costs for Wall-E and another third quarter release, "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," should lower margins. Third-quarter film revenue will pale in comparison to last year’s results, which were buoyed by the blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End." Even so, Helfstein expects the film division to beat Wall Street estimates. Helfstein predicts that Disney’s theme parks and resorts division will have a weak third-quarter performance on early signs of recession, with the worst still to come as higher airfare costs have a greater negative impact later in calendar 2008. Disney execs have reported strong summer bookings, thanks to international visitors taking advantage of the weak dollar. |

Walt Disney Co. earnings report due out
Orlando Sentinel - The Walt Disney Co. will release its third-quarter earnings and follow the report with an earnings call after the markets close this afternoon.
Thomson Reuters
is projecting consensus earnings in the
range of 61 cents and revenue in the
neighborhood of $9.1 billion, based on that
firm's survey of analysts. The range of
earnings projections found in the survey was
from 56 cents to 65 cents, while revenue
projections ranged from $8.7 billion to $9.6
billion, according to Thomson Reuters.
If Disney meets
the consensus expectations, both earnings
and revenue would be up over the same
quarter in 2007, whe n the company paid 57
cents in earnings on just about $9 billion
in revenue.
After filing
the report, Disney President and Chief
Executive Officer Bob Iger and Chief
Financial Officer Thomas Staggs will present

ESPN To Launch Online Action Sports Network;
Morphing EXPN Into It
Yahoo Finance - Right on cue around the X Games, ESPN (NYSE: DIS) has announced plans to launch an online action sports network, imaginatively called ESPN Action Sports Network. The online channel, slated for a fall launch, will have a slew of sites, each focused on action sports such as surfing, skateboarding, motocross and snowboarding. This will expand on its X Games franchise that it created more than a decade ago. The network also developed the EXPN.com website about a year ago to start offering daily content of different extreme sports, but that will now become ESPN Action Sports Network, the company says. Besides its own content, it has done deals with sports information and product websites Surfline.com, Vans.com and Active.com to share content and do cross promotion. Expect it to also do some acquisitions in this space. ESPN has been active and has acquired smaller sports websites over the last few years.
Staci adds: Action
sports seems like a no brainer, given that it
meshes Gen X/Y passions of technology and
extreme sports. The LAT is spot on when it
describes it as "an increasingly attractive, if
elusive, audience for the major networks."
Audience estimates vary wildly from 27 million
to 115 million with a high-spending core demo of
men ages 15-34. But the LAT is also right to
mention the fragmented nature of that audience
as enthusiasts stock to their own sports. Pardon
the mixed metaphor but it's no slam dunk. AOL
backed out of Lat34.com, its broadband action JV
with Fusion Entertainment, less than a year in—a
casualty of the post-Miller re-org and change in
priorities. Then again, the site itself is still
up and running.

Disney Bosses: 'Cyrus Not Quiting "Montana" Show'
San Francisco Chronicle - Disney bosses have denied reports the forthcoming "Hannah Montana" series will be singer/actress Miley Cyrus' last, despite the teen sensation admitting it was time the show ended.
Cyrus shot to fame in the Disney favorite at age
11, and is currently preparing to shoot the
third season of the hit show.
The
young star, now 15, told E! News that she
thought it may be time to hang up the "Montana"
mantle, as she had been working so hard on the
show for nearly five years.
She
said, "We're thinking this is our last season.
"I just think we
did a lot of episodes. We basically did two
seasons in one last year. Usually people would
do one season that would be, like, 16 episodes,
and we did almost 30 episodes!"
But
the show's representatives have denied the show
will finish after its third season, and insist
they are glad to still have Cyrus as part of the
"Disney family."
The
spokesperson tells E! Online, "Miley said it
best when she said she's delighted to be part of
the Disney family. We start production on the
third season of "Hannah Montana" on August 4 and
have an option for a fourth season beyond that.
"We
look forward to the "Hannah Montana" feature
film coming to a theater near you in Spring
2009."

Take
a Journey into Part of Her World
Disney Insider - Ever wonder if a wee Snow White whistled while she learned to walk or exactly who read bedtime stories to baby Belle? While Disney Princess sequels show us what follows "happily ever after," we haven't had insight into the early years of our beloved heroines -- until now. With the DVD release of "The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning," on August 26, Disney takes us on a magical journey into Ariel's past, showing us what made this young mermaid who she is today. Just
as every story has a beginning, every film has a
director who helps bring the story to life. Enter
director Peggy Holmes. With a background in dance
and choreography, Peggy brings an innate
understanding of movement that adds a new dimension
to this perky princess. In working on a prequel,
timing is everything, as Peggy explains that "it was
very important to tell Ariel's story so that she'd
be emotionally prepared for her adventures in the
next film. Ariel discovers a truth about her history
and comes to an understanding with her dad which
puts her where she needs to be to fall in love and
leave home."Before the crimson-haired princess ever sets eyes on Prince Eric, she starts o ff as a wide-eyed mermaid whose family lives in song-filled Atlantica. Ariel's instantaneous love of music is illuminated through her mother, Athena, and her lullabies. Everything changes the day her beloved mom is forever lost while singing above the sea, darkening the days of the kingdom, and forcing a brokenhearted King Triton to banish all music. The thought of an Atlantica without music is almost the same as an Ariel without Jodi Benson's voice. Fans will be happy to hear that the incredibly talented actress reprises her role as Ariel. Peggy says, "Jodi is the one and only Ariel. She created a character who truly lives in her heart. Jodi's an amazing storyteller, especially when she sings, as she puts so much emotion and character into her singing." Sam Wright also returns as Sebastian, King Triton's trusted crustacean advisor. But this time the crusty old crab's personality has a little extra zing. Going against the King's law, Sebastian keeps music alive by performing in an underground club. With emphasis on staying true to the original music of composers Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, Peggy felt it was also instrumental to offer a fresh take. "We wanted to embrace the sounds of Ariel while adding a contemporary feel to the music with the calypso vibe of Sebastian's songs." Rounding out the cast is screen legend Sally Field, who sinks her fins into the role of Marina del Rey, a deliciously evil nanny to Ariel and her sisters. Despite the fact that this is a prequel, Peggy felt it=2 0was necessary to bring a modern feel into the story. This is done through the use of music, which is illustrated through the scene where Ariel meets Flounder, who impresses her with his beatboxing skills, forging a musical bond between the soon-to-be best friends. While the original movie focused on following your heart, Peggy feels that "it was important to illustrate that music equals love. Part of what we wanted Ariel to do is to find that out for herself, then, ultimately bring that love back to her father's heart." So while Prince Eric has not yet arrived to win Ariel's heart, don't be fooled into thinking this isn't a love story. It's the love of music, of remembering loved ones, and the love of a father and his daughter that make this adventure so memorable! |

Ailing Hong Kong Disneyland thrown magic lifeline
Reuters - Hong Kong Disneyland, which has struggled since opening in 2005, was all smiles on Wednesday after the government made it the sole beneficiary of an easy-visa scheme that could bring millions of tourists from mainland China.
The new initiative,
which immediately drew accusations of
administrative interference, will bring people
from the neighboring city of Shenzhen who are
not normally qualified to visit Hong Kong
straight to the theme park and straight back
again, Hong Kong media reported.
"Under the pilot
scheme, migrants living and working in Shenzhen
will be able to join group tours to Disneyland
without having to return to their home provinces
to obtain travel permits," the South China
Morning Post said.
Most of Shenzhen's
16 million residents are migrants.
Disney's second
Magic Kingdom in Asia after Tokyo has missed
attendance targets, prompting the Hong Kong
government, a major stakeholder in the park, to
brand its performance "unsatisfactory".
The Hong Kong
government owns 57 percent of the park and Walt
Disney Co. owns the rest.
"We see a lot of up
side," said B.C. Lo, vice president for public
affairs at Hong Kong Disneyland.
The plan would
boost attendance at first by about two to three
tours a day, each including 40 to 100 people, he
said. That number was not huge, but Disneyland
saw the scheme as a foot in the door to other
parts of Guangdong province, a magnet for
laborers from other areas in China.
"The goal is to
expand," Lo said.
The park does not
release daily attendance figures, but Lo said
Hong Kong Disneyland could accommodate a maximum
of 34,000 people at any given time.
Charles Li
Kui-wai, associate professor of economics
and finance at City University, said there
were many ways for Disneyland to promote
itself to mainland visitors.
"This
interference by the government is not good,"
he was quoted in the Post as saying.

'Extreme Makeover' house faces
foreclosure
USA Today - More than 1,800 people showed up to help ABC's Extreme Makeover team demolish a family's decrepit home and replace it with a sparkling, four-bedroom mini-mansion in 2005.
Three years
later, the reality TV show's most
ambitious project at the time has become
the latest victim of the foreclosure
crisis.
After the
Harper family used the two-story home as
collateral for a $450,000 loan, it's set
to go to auction on the steps of the
Clayton County Courthouse Aug. 5. The
couple did not return phone calls
Monday, but told WSB-TV they received
the loan for a construction business
that failed.
The house
was built in January 2005, after
Atlanta-based Beazer Homes USA and ABC's
Extreme Makeover demolished their
old home and its faulty septic system.
Within six days, construction crews and
hoards of volunteers had completed work
on the largest home that the television
program had yet built.
The
finished product was a four-bedroom
house with decorative rock walls and a
three-car garage that towered over ranch
and split-level homes in their Clayton
County neighborhood. The home's door
opened into a lobby that featured four
fireplaces, a solarium, a music room and
a plush new office.
Materials
and labor were donated for the home,
which would have cost about $450,000 to
build. Beazer Homes' employees and
company partners also raised $250,000 in
contributions for the family, including
scholarships for the couple's three
children and a home maintenance fund.
ABC said in
a statement that it advises each family
to consult a financial planner after
they get their new home. "Ultimately,
financial matters are personal, and we
work to respect the privacy of the
families," the network said.
Some of the
volunteers who helped build the home
were less than thrilled about the
family's financial decisions.
"It's
aggravating. It just makes you mad. You
do that much work, and they just
squander it," Lake City Mayor Willie
Oswalt, who helped vault a massive beam
into place in the Harper's living room,
told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Miley Cyrus suggests it's the end for Disney's 'Hannah Montana' New York Daily News - Is this the end for "Hannah Montana"? The future of Disney's hit show has come into question after its star Miley Cyrus suggested the series might be coming to a close. "We're thinking this is our last season," Cyrus, 15, told E! News in an interview set to air Tuesday night. The show, which is about to film its third season, "seems like it's been on, like, longer," she said. Cyrus has played the role of Hannah Montana, a teen rock star who lives a double life, since she was in her early teens. Cyrus' remarks come during a trying year for the teen sensation. The singer-actress apologized in April after posing for suggestive photos in the May issue of Vanity Fair. Cyrus also said she was "truly sorry" for racy pictures of herself that were leaked online around the same time. But despite her recent comments, Cyrus' publicist told the Daily News that the teen sensation has no plans to leave the show. A Disney rep wouldn't say what the future holds for "Hannah" - after the fourth season. "We start production on the third season of 'Hannah Montana' on Aug. 4 and have an option for a fourth season beyond that," Disney's Patti McTeague said. "We look forward to the 'Hannah Montana' feature film coming to a theatre near you in Spring 2009." Regardless of when her show ends, Cyrus points out that she's still a part of the Disney family. "You know, they're safe," she said. "They always feel like home, and that's what I love about the company. They are family." |

Disney:
'Miley Cyrus Not Leaving Hannah Montana' TheImproper - Disney executives are dismissing speculation that the upcoming season of Hannah Montana will be its last, contradicting recent suggestions by Miley Cyrus that it was time for the show to end. "We're thinking this is our last season," Cyrus, 15, told E! "We basically did two seasons in one last year. Usually people would do one season that would be, like, 16 episodes, and we did almost 30." Cyrus began starring on Hannah Montana at age 11, and is currently prepping to shoot the third season of the hit TV show. There has been widspread speculation that Disney was maneuvering to toss the teen sensation aside after the show's ratings began sagging last year and following Miley's recent spate of controversial racy photo leaks on the Internet. On the heels of Miley's mini-scandals, other Disney teen stars, like Selena Gomez, 16, have been thrust into the spotlight, prompting talk that Cyrus is on the way out. But Disney representatives insist they stand behind their teen cash cow. "We start production on the third season of Hannah Montana on August 4 and have an option for a fourth season beyond that," said a Disney rep. "We look forward to the Hannah Montana feature film coming to a theater near you in Spring 2009." |

Disney
Shanghai park could involve media deal Reuters - Plans for a long-discussed Disneyland park in Shanghai could include a major media agreement between Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) and the Shanghai government that could give the company unrivaled access to the market, documents obtained by Reuters show. The joint venture agreement would give Disney a huge advantage over U.S. media rivals by allowing it to bypass foreign film import quotas and summer and holiday blackout periods, as well as television censorship, both imposed by the central government. While its rivals vie for the 20 slots allotted by the Chinese government each year to foreign films, Disney would be tasked with creating movies, TV and web fare to promote its brand, stories and characters to grow attendance at the Disney and Shanghai government-owned park, the documents show. Disney has engaged in on-again, off-again talks for more than a decade with the Chinese government over plans to build a large theme park and hotel complex in the southern outskirts of Shanghai's Pudong district, where Fortune 500 companies like General Motors Corp (GM.N) have regional headquarters. Those talks were stalled by a Shanghai government scandal in 2006 and Disney's need to focus on Hong Kong Disneyland, which opened in 2005 to a string of operational problems and lackluster attendance. The plan documents came from a presentation given by Shanghai city government officials at a meeting in April with local entrepreneurs and scholars who were then asked how to improve the plan, a source familiar with the meeting said. Two people familiar with the documents, who declined to be identified due to the sensitive nature of the situation, said that a legally binding final agreement would not be reached until some time after the Beijing Olympics in August. One source also said that current talks are focusing on other issues, such as potential funding and profit sharing, rather than the media and marketing proposal. JOINT VENTURE While the Chinese know Mickey Mouse and the Disney brand through the limited number of movies and TV shows allowed into the country each year and through Disney retail stores, they are less familiar with the fairy tales and characters that populate the parks, Disney officials have said. The documents call for Disney to receive a large stake in a joint venture that would manage the park. Under the joint venture, Disney would handle marketing and promotions in exchange for providing capital and technology. The Shanghai government-led local consortium, including some of the city's major developers, would provide land near the Pudong International Airport in exchange for its share. The joint venture would be controlled by the city government, which would have the right to appoint the general manager and other senior positions, according to the same sources. The agreement would give the joint venture the right to publish and distribute a Disney-branded magazine, and to produce animated films and television shows for local broadcast and cable TV that showcase both the Disney brand and the new park, the documents show. The content of the magazine, movies and TV shows, and breadth of distribution would have to be approved on a case-by-case basis by the central government and relevant ministries and regulators under Chinese rules, the documents showed. Disney also would get help from the joint venture in opening the Chinese market to its films and other programming, and in return would help distribute Chinese-made fare in the United States and other countries, the documents showed. The agreement also calls for the joint venture to authorize local manufacturers to produce Disney-branded toys in China and sell them internationally. 'IMPOSSIBLE TO PREDICT' The final talks for a Disneyland park in Shanghai could be accelerated after the Olympics, as central government leaders in Beijing prefer keeping the global focus on China's booming economy and improving standard of living in major cities, one of the sources said. Disney has been in talks since 1994 over the Shanghai park and was close to a deal about two years ago, when the project was stalled by a corruption scandal that sidelined several top Shanghai government officials involved in the negotiations, two sources close to the deal said. Disney's U.S. entertainment rivals, including NBC Universal and Time Warner Inc's (TWX.N) Warner Bros, have held talks with the Shanghai city government in the past decade but could not iron out differences over concerns such as management control and copyright protection. NBC Universal is 80 percent owned by General Electric Co (GE.N) and 20 percent by Vivendi (VIV.PA). |
