Is the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise a sinking ship? Disney ahoy! Disney World: Pluto author hangs with Pluto character |

Is the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise a sinking ship? Los Angeles Times - This week we're taking a look at four major trilogies from this decade that are looking to add a fourth film despite substantial challenges -- not least among those challenges the skepticism of moviegoers who may wonder whether some of these Hollywood vehicles are running on empty. "PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN" The story so far: Back in 2003, in the months before the release of the first "Pirates of the Caribbean" film, very few observers thought the venture was sea-worthy. It was a $135 million movie based on a Disneyland ride -- a crass approach to filmmaking that had given the world the furry failure of "The Country Bears" just a year earlier. The movie was also a pirate film -- a genre that went out of style in Errol Flynn's lifetime and had produced the cringe-worthy flop "Cuthroat Island" less than a decade earlier. The star, meanwhile, was Johnny Depp, an actor who had proven himself to be too quirky for the American movie going public (he had starred in only one film, "Sleepy Hollow," that topped a $100 million in U.S. box office). On paper, it looked like madness, but, of course, it turned out to be a treasure map. Depp's bleary rogue Jack Sparrow would be become a signature characters in modern popcorn-film history (and earn Depp an Academy Award nomination) while director Gore Verbinksi tapped into a rollicking mix of adventure, supernatural thrills and comedy. The first film pulled in $654 million worldwide. The sequel did even better -- it's $1.06 billion worldwide made it the highest-grossing film of 2006. A third film in 2007 brought in $961 million. A fourth installment, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," is due in 2011. The challenge: There are plenty. The first film was fresh, fun and unexpected, but the franchise started to get creaky as soon as it came back for a second voyage. The third film was oddly long and labored -- didn't this franchise start as swashbuckling lark? -- and left critics sounding as if they had found a drowning victim in the theater aisle. Claudia Puig of USA Today called it a "bloated, overwrought and convoluted three-hour misfire." Still, money was made, and Disney wants to keep this ship afloat, so a new approach was taken with this fourth film: The studio secured the rights to "On Stranger Tides," a 1987 novel by fantasy author Tim Powers that weaves a tale of pirates, voodoo and the Fountain of Youth, making this the first adapted work in the series. That move was made (presumably) to save the next film from the loopy and confusing plot threads of the last installment. That's all to the good, but there's also the question of who will replace Verbinski, who decided that after three films it was time to go ashore. Rob Marshall ("Chicago") is the name that is everywhere but his hiring has not been publicly confirmed by the studio as I type this. Really, though, the more pressing worry: What would "Pirates" do if its jolly anti-hero Jack Sparrow decided at this late-date to abandon ship? The status: The plan is start filming in the spring (that according to an MTV interview with co-star Geoffrey Rush) and the venture got off to a sunny start when Depp, proving himself a real trouper, showed up at a Disney convention in Anaheim in his full Sparrow costume and make-up to promote the film. Depp and Dick Cook, the longtime Disney studio executive who was a key player in the "Pirates" franchise, smiled, hugged and mugged for the cameras and fans. Then, just days later, Cook was kicked to the curb by his corporate bosses. Depp, in an interview with Claudia Eller of the Los Angeles Times, said he was "shocked and very sad" and admitted that there was "a crack in my enthusiasm" for the planned "Pirates" sequel. The prediction: Depp is in an interesting spot here. He does a lot of work with Disney ("Alice in Wonderland" is now in post-production and Disney officials say the "Lone Ranger" project is still out there on the horizon line) and I would imagine that, contractually, it would be very difficult for him to walk away from "Pirates" at this point, too. (If he does walk away, it would be thunderbolt announcement that would fracture his relations with the studio and cause a great deal of embarrassment for Disney CEO Bob Iger, the fellow who pushed Cook out onto the plank.) Depp showed himself to be a team player by dressing up as Sparrow for a promotional event but he also flashed his maverick spirit by publicly siding with the long-gone Cook. From my vantage point, that suggests he might honor his commitment to a fourth "Pirates" voyage and then set sail in a new direction. |

Disney ahoy! Expanding horizons In 2007, a significant multi year expansion of Disney's California Adventure was announced including new family-oriented attractions and shows that feature more stories and characters from Disney Pixar, including recently opened Toy Story Mania! This interactive 4-D ride-through attraction transports guests into a carnival midway hosted by ‘Toy Story’ characters. The park's expansion began in early 2009 with Mickey's Fun Wheel, a 150-foot-diameter attraction that features a new Mickey Mouse marquee, reopened along with the Games of the Boardwalk, carnival-style games. Opening in spring 2010, 'World of Color' will bring night time excitement to Paradise Pier with a panorama of spectacular water effects, dancing fountains and music that will bring Disney animation to life with a new creative and technical approach. It boasts a 9,000 guest viewing area. Magical mermaids The first major attraction based on Disney's classic 'The Little Mermaid' is coming to the park's Paradise Pier area. Guests will be able to dive into the scenes and songs from the movie when The Little Mermaid - Ariel's Undersea Adventure debuts in 2011. In 2012, a brand new gateway to Disney's California Adventure will welcome guests into the Los Angeles that Walt Disney experienced as a young artist arriving with big dreams in the 1920s. Red Car Trolleys reminiscent of the old Pacific Electric Red Car Line will travel up and down Buena Vista Street alongside new dining, shopping and entertainment experiences. A new visual icon inspired by Los Angeles' historic Carthay Circle Theatre, which premiered 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' in 1937, will draw guests into the heart of the park. Culminating the major expansion is the entirely new, 12-acre addition: Cars Land, which recreates the town of Radiator Springs as inspired by the film 'Cars.' Cars Land will feature three immersive family attractions, Radiator Springs Racers, Luigi's Flying Tires and Mater's Junkyard Jamboree. Radiator Springs Racers will be one of the largest and most elaborate attractions ever created for a Disney park. Walt Disney Imagineering's Blue Sky Cellar, a preview center located near the Golden Vine Winery, showcases the expansion plans for Disney's California Adventure. Here, guests can take a sneak peek at models, concepts and sketches and view a video of what's new and what's next. |

Is Blackstone the Next
Disney? The Motley Fool - The buyout chatter was true. Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX) is buying the 10 Busch Entertainment theme parks that InBev begrudgingly acquired when it snapped up Anheuser-Busch. One of Blackstone's buyout funds will pay $2.3 billion for the parks as well as $400 million in capped future park earnings. Blackstone is getting plenty of popular attractions in the deal, anchored by the Sea World and Busch Gardens theme-park chains. It will go well with other Blackstone fund stakes that include Legoland, Madame Tussauds, and half of the Universal Orlando resort. Unlike regional operators Cedar Fair (NYSE: FUN) and Six Flags, most of Blackstone's properties are year-round getaways. It's picking up an enviable collection of tourist magnets, but are they enough to take Disney (NYSE: DIS) head-on in Florida and California? The possibilities are endless now that Blackstone owns all of the major Central Florida theme parks outside Disney's massive resort. It probably won't be long before annual passes are offered that cover all of the gated attractions. It's also now just a matter of time before Legoland Florida becomes a reality. At the very least, a scaled-back Legoland will probably open within many Busch parks. So will Blackstone be the next Disney? No. It can't. All it owns are the parks. Disney's empire includes cable channels, cruise ships, and movie studios, too. Disney's parks provide a profitable way for the family-entertainment giant to market and expand their character properties. This summer's $4 billion deal to acquire Marvel Entertainment (NYSE: MVL) will only help in that regard. Blackstone isn't as fortunate. It will have to run its theme parks as standalone businesses. Instead of building on proprietary characters outside Sea World's Shamu, it will have to fork over licensing fees to content creators. This is the same reason it didn't make a lot of sense for the character-rich CBS (NYSE: CBS) to sell its Paramount Parks chain to Cedar Fair three years ago. Universal Orlando is going to have a banner year when its Harry Potter attraction opens in 2010, but the real beneficiaries are likely to be movie maker Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) and New York publisher Scholastic (Nasdaq: SCHL). This doesn't necessarily make Blackstone's purchase of Busch Entertainment a bad one. Cedar Fair has run a successful park chain for decades without dabbling in content creation. Blackstone will, however, have to operate its parks as isolated moneymakers. But as long as it continues to invest in new rides and experiences to keep the turnstiles clicking, InBev's loss will surely be Blackstone's gain. |

In memoriam: Bruce Bowes Orlando Sentinel - I'm sorry to have to report the death, on Saturday, of Bruce Bowes, a sound designer who worked at Disney and for Orlando Shakespeare Theater. Bruce died of a massive heart attack. Here's a message from his friend Gary Graham, who called Bruce "one of the most brilliant sound engineers." Bruce Bowes is the reason that the Shakespeare Theater sounds so good now, he was the sound designer for a number of productions including his last, The Big Bang. Bruce was the lead audio technician for the Comedy Warehouse at Pleasure Island and he worked with me tirelessly to design and install a sound system for the club that was second to none. He also mixed Josh Groban in the Adventurers Club library, and you would think that Josh was singing in an arena. He was also one of the audio mixers at the West End Stage and mixed many of the headliner acts that appeared on the stage. The sound he coaxed from the artists was absolutely fantastic, and he could make the band on stage sound as if they were playing right next to you. Bruce was married to Joy Anderson, a former NYC Rockette who worked at the Comedy Warehouse and The Adventurers Club and is currently one of the Judges for the American Idol Experience at Disney Hollywood Studios. What is so tragic is that he died on their second Wedding Anniversary. I am sure Jim Helsinger can give you a much better feeling of what Bruce did for the Shakespeare Theater. Bruce was also very much into charity and completed a number of cycling tours with Mary Thompson Hunt and others for charities such as muscular dystrophy and HIV/AIDS. Bruce is going to be greatly missed by many in the theatrical community in Orlando. Gary Graham Production Stage Manager, AEA |

"Opposite Day" attracts
Disney Reuters - Disney will celebrate "Opposite Day." The studio is developing a high-concept comedy with that title and has hired "Nancy Drew" scribe Tiffany Paulsen to write it. "Opposite," based on an idea by studio production president Oren Aviv, centers on a corporate hatchet man who wakes up one morning and finds he must follow the exact opposite of his normal routine. Paulsen wrote 2007's "Drew," an adaptation of the classic children's detective series for Warners. She also is attached to write "Further Adventures in Babysitting," Disney's reboot of the 1980s teen hit. Aviv has conceived of a number of movie ideas that became hit Disney projects, including the adventure franchise "National Treasure," for which he received a story credit. |

Away from
'Musical,' still at the kids table Chicago Tribune - Corbin Bleu may have graduated from "High School Musical," but he stays close to his Disney Channel roots in "Free Style," a squeaky-clean sports flick about a poor kid with big dreams (and bigger hair) trying to make it in the motocross world. The inoffensive family film, directed by genre veteran William Dear ("Harry and the Hendersons"), trades heavily on Bleu's natural appeal and the movie's belief in sportsmanship, loyalty and the fact that girls with permed hair are not to be trusted. But for all the flying dirt, the motocross scenes never take off, lacking both coherence and excitement. And that's a crippling flaw for a movie that revs its engines for a good half of its 94-minute running time. Bleu's character, Cale, lives with his single mom (Penelope Ann Miller) and little sister (Madison Pettis) in a Washington town. The racial difference between Bleu and Miller is vaguely addressed when little sis, tired of being teased about her appearance, asks, "Are we white or black?" Cale's response: "We're whack!" The movie revels in that kind of good-natured, sitcom-style corniness as Cale struggles to overcome his humble roots and meager bank account to win a spot on a professional motocross racing team. Along the way, Cale encounters enough obstacles and calamities to make him kin to the long-suffering academic in "A Serious Man." But unlike the Coens' hero, there's never any doubt about Cale's destiny. Problem is, the silly way he arrives there in the movie's take on the Big Game might fill you with a different type of existential despair. |

Disney Fans Love Alice in Wonderland Movie Trailer Examiner - The Disney movie Alice in Wonderland is scheduled to be released in March 2010, however fans are excited about this forthcoming movie now, and it is still five months away. Connecting by video, fans are making the trailer for Alice in Wonderland very popular. It is gaining ground on the video viral lists as being in the top five for the week. This is for all the different lists available which is great news for Disney! Why? Fans have been analyzing the trailer and looking over what to be expected with this movie. Excited and impatient (just like a kid on Christmas evening) fans really want to see the movie, yet have to wait. Plus, there are mega rumors surfacing that someone has copied the entire movie and has placed it online for all to see prior to the release date. After searching diligently the online community, nothing could be found to substantiate this rumor, but then again there are plenty of places to hide the perfect download file and it isn't like a press release will be sent out that someone is beating out the Disney Corporation. The rumors start about three weeks ago and the story is pretty much the same. An employee looking to make a few bucks copied the film and gave it to a friend who found a way to upload it. As with any rumor, they are just rumors, but it does do a great job for a viral marketing campaign for a highly anticipated movie. |

Brian
Wilson Signs with Walt Disney Records Wall Street Journal - Two giants of popular entertainment have come together as Brian Wilson, the pioneering musical genius who co-founded the Beach Boys and wrote many of the band's greatest hits, has signed with Walt Disney Records. In the months ahead, Wilson will record two new solo albums for the label's Disney Pearl imprint, including one featuring covers of classic songs by great American songwriters, George and Ira Gershwin. For that recording, the Gershwin estate has given Wilson access to rare, unfinished pieces of music by George Gershwin, with which he will craft collaborative compositions unlike anything the world has seen. He will follow that with an album of classic Disney songs, which the artist promises to "Brian-ize" with his trademark vocal stacks and unique arrangements. Release dates for each album have yet to be determined. Said David Agnew, Walt Disney Records president and general manager of the Disney Music Group, "We are honored to be in business with one of the greatest musical artists of all time. It is impossible to overstate the impact Brian has had on contemporary music and culture -- it has been nothing less than profound. We look forward to partnering with Brian on this exciting new voyage in his musical journey." "I've always tried to make music that entertained people," Wilson said. "I also wanted my music to last, to be able to speak to any generation. Thankfully, nearly 50 years since the Beach Boys were born, that seems to have come true. Now, a new musical chapter begins for me, and teaming up with Disney means it's going to be a chapter to remember. I promise." Wilson chose to record George and Ira Gershwin songs because he considers the late composers of classics like "Someone to Watch Over Me " "Rhapsody in Blue" and "Summertime" as a critical influence on him. "I've always loved George Gershwin. The earliest music I remember hearing is 'Rhapsody in Blue,'" says Wilson, referring to Gershwin's groundbreaking 1924 orchestral piece. "Along with Irving Berlin, Gershwin basically invented the popular song, but he did something more. He had a gift for melody that nobody has ever equaled yet his music is timeless and always accessible. This is the most spiritual project I've ever worked on." Said Todd Gershwin (George Gershwin estate) and Michael Owen (Ira Gershwin estate): "The Gershwin families are delighted that the legendary musician Brian Wilson has chosen to record a collection of George and Ira Gershwin songs for his next project. In every generation, American music has been pushed forward by visionaries, from the Gershwin brothers to Brian Wilson. This latest interpretation will be a new opportunity to discover the magic of Gershwin music." Like Gershwin, Brian Wilson is one of the great composers of the last 100 years. The Southern California native, along with his brothers, a cousin and a friend, formed the Beach Boys while still in his teens. With Wilson as chief songwriter and arranger, the band not only enjoyed dozens of hits, but changed music forever thanks to Brian's innovative melodies and harmonies. Songs like "I Get Around," "Help Me, Rhonda," "California Girls," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," and the #1 smash "Good Vibrations" remain indispensable staples in the rock 'n' roll canon. The band's "Pet Sounds" (1966) is regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time. Wilson continued to make great music after the Beach Boys, with 10 solo albums including his breathtaking "Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE," which he began recording in the 1960s and finally completed in 2004 to thunderous critical acclaim and Top 20 chart success (as well as earning a Grammy). A member of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, a Kennedy Center honoree and recipient of multiple Gold and Platinum records, Brian Wilson has earned his well-deserved pop music immortality. |

Disney Wins Dismissal of Suit Over Segways, Settlement Voided Bloomberg - Walt Disney Co. won dismissal of a lawsuit claiming a ban on personal two-wheel transporters at its facilities violates federal disabilities laws, after a judge rejected a proposed settlement in the case. Two Illinois residents and one from Iowa sued Disney in November 2007 after the company barred them from using the Segway Personal Transporter on family vacations at four theme parks in Florida. As an alternative to Segways, Disney agreed in December to acquire at least 15 newly designed electric stand-up vehicles to settle the case. U.S. District Judge Gregory Presnell in Orlando yesterday voided an earlier decision granting preliminary approval to the settlement and threw out the case. The plaintiffs, who are all able to use wheelchairs or scooters, failed to show that Segways were “necessary” to access the park, Presnell said in the decision. “Although some individuals may, with good reason, not want to use those devices and instead prefer to use a Segway, that preference -- standing alone -- is not essential to accessing Disney’s Parks,” Presnell wrote in the opinion. Bernard Dempsey, an attorney for plaintiff Mahala Ault, and Jason Medley, representing plaintiff Stacie Rhea, didn’t immediately return phone and e-mail messages seeking comment yesterday. John Baker and J. Phillip Krajewski, attorneys for plaintiff Dan Wallace, also didn’t return phone messages. “This ruling is consistent with what we’ve advocated all along in this case that we have appropriately balanced the need to maintain a safe environment for everyone while at the same time meeting our legal requirements to provide access to those with mobility impairments,” Andrea Finger, a spokeswoman for Disney, said in a phone interview. 7,000 Riders The Segway, a two-wheeled, self-balancing transportation device, allows riders to remain upright and steer with body movements. The device, first sold in 2002, is used by as many as 7,000 people in the U.S. with mobility-related disabilities, according to court documents. Disabled people who objected to the settlement argued at a court hearing this year that the Segway was their preferred choice of transportation. The Justice Department argued that the settlement agreement would compromise its ability to regulate the theme park industry. Aaron Bates, an attorney for many of the objectors, said yesterday’s decision was a “win” for people with disabilities. “This leaves the door open for others to file suit, and the government may soon recognize Segways in the same way they do wheelchairs and other mobility devices,” Bates said in a phone interview. Disney’s new vehicles, called ESVs, would replicate in dimension and operation a wheelchair while allowing users to stand upright, the company said in court papers. Under the terms of the settlement, the vehicles would have been rented on the same terms as sit-down electric vehicles. The case is Ault v. Walt Disney World Co., 07-01785, U.S. District Court, Middle District of Florida (Orlando). |

Surprised author Tim Powers finds himself setting sail with
'Pirates of the Caribbean' Los Angeles Times - Last month, Johnny Depp walked on stage at the Anaheim Convention Center in his Jack Sparrow costume and delighted a surprised audience of Disney fans with his rummy buccaneer's trademark mutter. Within an hour, in San Bernadino, an award-winning fantasy author named Tim Powers found a flurry of emails from surprised friends and fans filling his inbox. The reason for the e-mail barrage: Depp's theatrical
appearance at Disney's D23 Expo included the announcement that
the fourth Sparrow film will be entitled "Pirates of the
Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," which echoes the name of a
1987 fantasy novel by Powers about pirates and the Fountain of
Youth. Everyone wanted to know if Powers had hit the Hollywood
jackpot -- or if he needed to be in touch with his attorney. "I was still -- as far as I understood -- not free to talk about it," the author told me Monday. "Then about a week ago my agent wrote and said, 'You're now able to say that in fact Disney did option the book.' That happened a while ago, it'll be three years in April." The novelist, with a dozen books to his credit, is still a
bit dazed by the fact that a book he published during the Reagan
The 57-year-old is a two-time winner of the World Fantasy
Award, taking the prize home for "Last Call" (the 1992 tale
based in "I've watched all the movies several times, of course, and I think the clear thing they would use is the trip to the Fountain of Youth," Powers said. "My main character doesn't overlap with Jack Sparrow at all [in personality or circumstance]; they're totally different characters. I suppose they might overlap the Geoffrey Rush character Barbossa and Blackbeard. The only thing I feel certain they will hold on to is the Fountain of Youth since they telegraphed that at the end of the last movie." Either way, Powers said he is not going to walk into the theater with too many expectations other than hoping to have a good time as a moviegoer. "Some people said, 'Powers are you worried that they're going to mess up your book?' and I always think of something James Cain, the author of 'The Postman Always Rings Twice,' said when people asked what he thought of the things Hollywood had done to his books; he pointed to the bookshelf and said, 'They haven't done anything to them, look.' That's my attitude. Just take all the fun stuff and, of course, any checks.... It strikes me as unrealistic to look at it in any other way." Still, Powers has a bit of concern about the project as it
moves forward, considering some recent reports. On Sept. 18,
after the "There's a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment," the star said, saying also that he was "shocked and very sad" to see Cook walk the corporate plank after playing such a key role in the "Pirates" success story. "Pirates" would also be moving forward without Gore Verbinski, the director of the opening trilogy. On Monday, Powers sounded like a man who wishes he could cast a voodoo spell on all the Hollywood players who are navigating the cinematic ship of the "Pirates" franchise. "Nobody talk to each other, everyone just stand and smile, don't do anything to mess this up, let's keep this going, OK?" |

Selena Gomez Gets
Serious For UNICEF Ecorazzi - I haven’t watched the Disney Channel for about 14 years, but if I had to choose my favorite Mickey Mouse star it would definitely be Selena Gomez. In the past, Ecorazzi reported that Gomez has spoken out about environmental initiatives, got hooked on books for charity, and even lent her fame to help dogs and cats in Puerto Rico. Now, as the youngest UNICEF Ambassador in history, Selena is getting serious about raising some major dough. In early September, the Disney star spent time in Ghana, West Africa where she witnessed poverty on a whole new level. Gomez hopes to raise $1 million for the foundation by the end of this year – a $400,000 increase from last year. Out of 195 countries, Ghana is ranked 30 for the highest
mortality rates of children under the age of 5. “Every day
25,000 children die from preventable causes,” said Gomez. “I

in the belief that we can change that number from 25,000 to

Disney's Rich Ross: Hollywood's first openly gay studio chairman Los Angeles Times - Disney has long been the most gay friendly studio in Hollywood, having had a couple of gay production chiefs over the years, most recently Nina Jacobson, now an independent producer after being forced out in a studio purge several years ago. The studio's theme parks have allowed unofficial Gay Day celebrations for years, prompting a host of venemous attacks from various Christian right anti-gay zealots. But Disney now has a really big first -- Rich Ross, Hollywood's first openly gay studio chief. Ross, who had been head of the Disney Channel, hasn't been giving interviews since he was named studio chief Monday. So I started reading old Ross interviews, eager to discover what his creative tastes were like, figuring it might give me insight into the kind of movies he'd want to make. That led me to a story from this year by one of my colleagues, Dawn Chmielewski, who did an in-depth profile of Ross and his tenure at Disney TV. I found this: "The 47-year-old Ross and his partner of more than 20 years, Adam Sanderson, live in the Hollywood Hills and have no children of their own. However, he maintains a close relationship with the 14- and 10-year-old daughters of his former roommate and best friend from Fordham Law, who serve as an informal focus group." After a little more hunting, I found that the Advocate has just posted a small story, titled: "Disney Goes Gay with New Top Exec." Still, judging from a quick canvas I made of gay filmmakers and executives, the news about Ross was something of a revelation, even in the gay community. That may be because people in the film world don't always keep track of TV executives, especially ones making children's programming. One filmmaker was aware that Ross was gay, but others I spoke to knew little about his professional life, much less his private life. As one executive put it: "Every day showbiz offers a new surprise." But is it a good surprise? "Absolutely," says producer Howard Rosenman, who's not only openly gay but played the role of David Goodstein, an early owner of the Advocate, in last year's Oscar-nominated film "Milk." "It's not just the first time ever, but it's the greatest thing ever," he told me jubilantly. "After all these years, what finally matters is -- show me the money! It doesn't matter what you do with your [penis], just what you do with your job. It's a new era in Hollywood. Rich Ross will only be judged by how well he makes the product and and how commercial it is, not who he is in his private life. He's obviously already been a big success at the Disney Channel, so he clearly knows what he's doing." Disney hasn't exactly been playing up that Ross is gay. But there are two ways of interpreting that. It's possible that Disney is hoping no one makes a fuss or that none of the business reporters who will eventually interview Ross will make his personal life an issue. But it's also possible that after all these years, the sexual orientation of a major entertainment executive isn't big news anymore. That alone would be a huge step forward, especially since previous generations of studio executives have been forced to remain in the closet, or at least believed it prudent, fearing a public outcry. But I'll let Rosenman have the last word on this. "You know what I really think?" he said. "It's about time!" |

Favre leads
Vikings and ESPN to big win Los Angeles Times - Beating every team in the NFL wasn't the only record Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre set. He also led ESPN's "Monday Night Football" to record ratings for a cable telecast. Favre's victory over his old team not only kept the Minnesota Vikings under undefeated, it also drove Walt Disney Co.'s ESPN to its strongest night ever. The game, which has been heavily anticipated since Favre came out of retirement (for a second time) in August, drew 21.8 million viewers, making it the most-watched cable television program in history. Needless to say, it also totally crushed the broadcast competition, whose top show Monday night was CBS "CSI Miami," which attracted 13.4 million viewers ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" with 16.3 million viewers. Among adults ages 18 to 49, the game -- which the Vikings won by a score of 30 to 23 (it wasn't that close) -- scored a 9.0 rating. Each rating point in that demographic equals 1.3 million adults, which translates to almost 12 million people. Last night's game beat the previous best for a cable show, which was also an ESPN football telecast. Last year's Philadephia Eagles-Dallas Cowboys match attracted 18.6 million viewers. The most-watched non-sports cable show was Disney Channel's 2007 telecast of "High School Musical 2," which averaged 17.2 million viewers. |

Disney picks up 'Reel'
pitch Hollywood Reporter - Disney has preemptively picked up "Reel to Real," a family fantasy pitch by Eric Saiet and Andrea Maywhort-Scully. The story involves a magical film projector. Casey Wolfe is overseeing for the studio. The deal was made before Rich Ross was named chairman of Walt Disney Studios on Monday. Saiet and Maywhort-Scully, based in New York, are newcomers to the screenwriting trade though, in Saiet's case, not to the industry. He acted as a youngster (his first credit is "Ferris Bueller's Day Off") and has had dozens of TV appearances. Maywhort-Scully is also working on a novel. The duo is repped by ICM, Original Content and McKuin Frankel Whitehead. |

Next decision for Disney: how to replace Rich Ross LATimes - Now that Rich Ross has been bumped up from president of Disney Channels Worldwide to chairman of Walt Disney Studios, attention will soon turn to who will be taking his old job. No word from Disney yet on whom that will be, but in e-mail to staff, Anne Sweeney, co-chairman of Disney's Media Networks unit, said a replacement for Ross would be named in the next few weeks. There is, of course, a list of usual suspects within Disney for Ross' job. One name that naturally leaps to mind is Gary Marsh, who is president of entertainment for Disney Channel and the top creative executive beneath Ross. Under his watch, Disney Channel launched "Hannah Montana," "Wizards of Waverly Place" and "That's So Raven." Marsh has been at Disney Channel for 21 years, so he certainly knows all the turf there. However, it remains to be seen if Marsh is interested in giving up his passion for programming to assume all the other, less fun parts that go with the top job, including the politics and number-crunching. Speaking of number-crunching, there is Jewell Engstrom, chief financial officer and executive vice president of the Disney-ABC Cable Networks Group. Engstrom, who reports to Sweeney, oversees all the financial operations for Disney's cable networks (with the exception of the ESPN unit) domestically and abroad, which include 23 Disney Channels and eight Toon Disney channels. Another candidate could be Giorgio Stock, executive vice president and managing director of Disney Channels, Europe, Middle East and Africa. Stock, who just took that post in March, has been with Disney since 1997 and prior to his current job was head of Disney Channels, Italy. A dark horse could be Paul Lee, who has had a strong track record turning around ABC Family. The channel's ratings have improved dramatically under Lee over the last five years, and it has a successful series in "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" and a franchise in its "25 Days of Christmas" programming. |

Disneyland
Resort president to retire LATimes - The president of the Disneyland Resorts in Anaheim, the first African American to oversee the theme park, announced his retirement Monday. Ed Grier, 54, started his 28-year Disney career as a senior auditor. From 2004 to 2006, he was executive director of the Disney attractions in Tokyo. In 2006, he took over as head of the Anaheim operations. Grier oversees a workforce of 20,000 employees at the 506-acre resort, which includes Disneyland, Disney's California Adventure Park, the Disneyland Hotel, Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, the Paradise Pier Hotel and Downtown Disney. He came onboard after the opening of California Adventure, an expansion of Disneyland that has struggled to draw the crowds expected by Disney executives. But he won't be around to manage the $1-billion expansion of California Adventure beginning next spring. A successor hasn't been named. In an e-mail to Disney staff, Al Weiss, Grier's boss and head of Disney's worldwide park operations, said Grier planned to help his sons operate a postproduction film business in Orange. Grier, who leaves the company Friday, issued his own e-mail to Disney employees, but did not say why he was retiring or what he planned to do next. "I have had a long and rewarding career with the Walt Disney company, and am excited to explore what's next," he said in the e-mail. |

Magic Kingdom eateries take control of seating to boost
efficiency and help diners relax Orlando
Sentinel - Walt Disney World is experimenting with new
crowd-control methods in some of its busiest in-park
restaurants, hoping to make the facilities more pleasant for
guests and more profitable for the resort.Inside four quick-service restaurants in the Magic Kingdom, Disney has begun restricting access — but guaranteeing seating — during particularly busy lunch rushes. Managers say the approach helps smooth out traffic in part by eliminating the need for groups to split up and send someone to order food while another person holds an open table — something that can clog up as much as one-third of a restaurant's capacity at any given time. "This has been very helpful for us from an efficiency standpoint, because everything's so well-organized," said Liz Clark, general manager of food and beverage in the Magic Kingdom. The tinkering illustrates one of the small ways theme parks have sought to squeeze more money out of existing operations — beyond top-level cost cuts — in the midst of a recession that has sapped attendance and guest spending. Disney does not break out how much restaurant sales contribute to the revenue of individual theme parks. But experts say it is substantial. "The food-and-beverage operations are very significant in the overall bottom line," said Mary Jo Ross, a former multi-unit restaurant manager at Universal Orlando and an assistant professor at the University of Central Florida's Rosen College of Hospitality Management. Disney says the restaurant changes are part of an internal initiative called "The Basics," in which employees have been urged to re-emphasize customer service. Busy, in-park restaurants are an obvious target for improvements; around noon on a busy day, they can rival the longest ride queues in terms of crowds, noise and stress levels. "It wasn't really a good way to decompress or relax. So we've been really focusing on how we can enhance the whole dining experience," Clark said. Under the controlled-access and -seating program, guests in certain Magic Kingdom counter-service restaurants are steered through a single entrance so workers can keep tabs on how many people are inside. A greeter hands menus and steers the entire group to cash registers to place their orders. After they get their food, they are guided by another employee to an empty table. Implementing the change is trickier than it may sound. For example, the restaurants have multiple entrances, so Disney restaurant managers have had to work with the resort's "Imagineers" to work out new ways of guiding traffic through a single point. Clark said the program has already evolved based on feedback from guests. The menus that greeters hand out were initially only available in English and were done entirely in text; they have since been changed to include multiple languages, pictures of the menu selections, and information about using a pre-purchased dining plan that Disney sells to resort guests. Disney began testing the concept in the Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Café. But it has since been rolled out to three other busy counter-service restaurants: Columbia Harbour House, Pinocchio Village Haus and Cosmic Ray's Starlight Café. Those restaurants range in size from about 400 seats to more than 1,000 at Pecos Bill and Cosmic Ray's. The controlled access is used only when that day's park attendance warrants. Clark said the results have been overwhelmingly positive, both in terms of praise from guests who report a more-relaxed dining experience and in terms of reducing congestion inside the restaurants, where, like on a busy highway, small backups can cascade over the course of a day into lengthier delays. Disney has also made other, subtler changes. At Pecos Bill, for instance, the resort has added self-service ordering kiosks, though guests can still opt to order from a human cashier. Workers also recently replaced highly themed, high-backed chairs at Pecos Bill with smaller, less clunky stools. The switch, which Disney said was made on the suggestion of a restaurant worker, has allowed the restaurant to add an extra seat at many tables and improved the aisles between tables, helping alleviate further bottlenecks. |

April-Sept. visitors to Tokyo Disney parks show 1st drop in 4
yrs Kyodo News - Visitors to the Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea entertainment resorts totaled 12,301,000 in the April to September first half of fiscal 2009, down 5.7 percent from a year earlier for the first decrease in the period in four years, the operator of the theme parks said Thursday. But the number is the third largest for the fiscal first half on record, Oriental Land Co. said. The company had anticipated the decline from the beginning partly because it attracted a record-high 27.22 million guests in fiscal 2008 when Tokyo Disneyland marked its 25th anniversary. For fiscal 2009 ending next March 31, Oriental Land is adhering to its projection of 25.6 million visitors. |

Man
accused of filming Andrews released on bond AP - An Illinois insurance executive accused of secretly making nude videos of ESPN reporter Erin Andrews apparently uploaded videos of other unsuspecting nude women to the Internet, a federal prosecutor said Monday. Michael D. Barrett, 47, of Westmont, was released on $4,500 bond but was ordered to wear an ankle monitoring bracelet, to adhere to a strict curfew and not to use the Internet. He is due in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on Oct. 23 to face federal charges of interstate stalking. Barrett is accused of making the videos by modifying peepholes in hotel room doors, using a hacksaw and a cell phone camera, and then trying to sell them to Los Angeles-based celebrity gossip site TMZ. Barrett continues to be a danger to Andrews and "a danger to other women," Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Grimes told U.S. Magistrate Judge Arlander Keys during Barrett's bond hearing Monday. "Yes, Judge, there are other women," Grimes said. "He has used his computer to disseminate these videos to the world." Grimes said the government has confiscated two computers and cell phones used by Barrett, and "feels strongly that those items will provide further evidence." Like the Andrews videos, the videos of the other women were shot through a door peephole and uploaded to the Internet under a name Barrett used, "GOBLAZERS1," Grimes said. Andrews appears in at least eight videos nude. An FBI affidavit said Barrett specifically asked for a room next to Andrews at a Tennessee hotel where seven videos were likely taken. An eighth video may have been shot at a Milwaukee hotel. Barrett was described by his attorney, Rick Beuke, as having plenty of money and a good track record at work. Beuke said his employer, the Combined Insurance Co., based in Glenview, where he is in insurance sales, is "very supportive." But Combined Insurance spokeswoman Amy Burrell-Tichy said later Monday that Barrett has been suspended from his job and "there is no timeframe with this suspension." She declined say whether he would be paid while suspended. She said the company is cooperating with the FBI and conducting an internal investigation because the affidavit alleges Barrett may have used Combined Insurance computers in the alleged crimes. Beuke told reporters after court that Barrett has many friends and that the person described in an FBI affidavit released Saturday "is certainly not the Mike Barrett that any of us know." He said he had spoken with Barrett's parents, who live near Portland, Ore., and "this is a tough time for them." Keys said he did not "want to minimize the seriousness of what Mr. Barrett is charged with here" and described it as "a very horrific crime." But the judge said Barrett had strong friendships in the community, no criminal record and no sign of drug or alcohol abuse. He also had noted that Barrett had a steady job. Barrett was released late Monday afternoon and sped away in a yellow Mustang without stopping to comment. He avoided reporters and went in a back door upon arriving at his suburban Chicago home. Andrews attorney Marshall Grossman of Santa Monica, Calif., did not immediately return a call seeking comment on Barrett's release. Marriott International Inc. and Ramada Worldwide, which operate the hotels where the videos may have been shot, have issued statements saying they are concerned about their guests privacy and safety, are looking into the matter and are cooperating with authorities. Interstate stalking carries a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000. ESPN is owned by The Walt Disney Co. |

Rich has proved himself through his work turning the entertainment of the Disney Channel into a brand strategy – from “Hannah Montana,” to “High School Musical.” Rich is said to be a strong team player, but has no experience in feature films. "We believe this type of release helps to spread the buzz around the world. Also, VOD brings revenues even if it's not going to replace broadcasts," Pyne said at the Mipcom TV trade fair in Cannes Monday. DAIT's Foxtel deal takes in key skeins. Disney Institute Helps South Africa Prepare for World Cup ManageSmarter - Disney Institute, the professional training and consulting arm of The Walt Disney Company, today began helping the Tourism Business Council of South Africa benchmark the state of customer service in preparation for the country's hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa in June and July. Disney Institute facilitators—who are Disney Cast Members and have held leadership roles in the organization—will make recommendations on how to apply consistent customer service across all industries. The end goal is to train workers on how to apply that consistent service in all "on-stage" areas during the event and going forward. Disney Institute has worked globally on similar customer service initiatives in such countries as India, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Phase one of the Tourism Service Excellence Initiative (TSEI) begins this week with the first of several focus group sessions conducted by a team from Disney Institute. The team will be in the country for the next four weeks, conducting a series of focus group sessions to evaluate the current customer service standards and delivery in the country. "The main objective in this phase of the project is to evaluate the current customer service delivery ethos and gaps in South Africa, and to use this information to develop a locally relevant program for the delivery of memorable and unforgettable service to all visiting the country," says Mmatsatsi Marobe, CEO of Tourism Business Council of SA, the implementing partner on TSEI. The National Department of Tourism formed a partnership with Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) to ensure that action is taken to improve service levels within the sector. The initiative features a five-pillar approach to implementation. The initial pillar includes the research and audit of service levels within the sector and subsequent pillars include service delivery training, a public awareness campaign, measurement and monitoring of service standards, and the implementation of a tourism service consumer feedback system. "We wanted a team with a global understanding of service excellence standards, so our results can be benchmarked against global insights," says Sindiswa Nhlumayo, deputy director-general for tourism in the Department of Tourism. "We also wanted to benefit from tried and tested global approaches on service delivery from a reputable organization like The Disney Institute." For the first pillar, the Disney Institute team will be conducting research around the country from Sept. 28 to Oct. 22. All tourism businesses have been urged to respond to invitations and confirm their participation in the initiative. Respondents were encouraged to provide the team with information on the challenges and opportunities for the improvement of service levels in South Africa. Focus groups will range from groups of six to eight people, and require two to three hours with the Disney team. "We are excited to be working with the TBCSA and the Department of Tourism team in what is clearly a vital project for the industry in South Africa," says Jeff James, vice president of Disney Institute. "We look forward to helping the local teams to ensure the issue of improving service standards is addressed in the most comprehensive way." The final outcomes of the audit will be shared with the industry in a report, and the key findings in this report will determine the content of the next phases of TSEI. |

Disney: 25,000 unionized hourly workers will get raises this
week Orlando Sentinel - Despite the still-struggling economy, about 25,000 unionized hourly workers at Walt Disney World are getting raises this week. The raises, which will range from 4 percent to 5 percent for most workers, are part of a three-year contract that the resort and Service Trades Council Union negotiated in April 2007. Another 4,000 tipped employees will get raises at the end of the year. The trade council — an umbrella group representing half a dozen smaller unions whose members include costumed characters, hotel maids, stagehands, monorail drivers and many more — estimates that the raises will add between $15 million and $20 million dollars of purchasing power to the local economy. That contract expires a year from now. Look for a new round of negotiations between Central Florida's largest employer and the trade council to begin early next year. |

Judge
to decide bail for accused Andrews stalker AP - A Chicago judge is expected to decide Monday whether to release on bail the man accused of stalking ESPN reporter Erin Andrews and allegedly secretly videotaping her nude. Michael David Barrett, a 47-year-old insurance company employee, has been held in jail since his arrest Friday at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago. A federal magistrate judge must decide whether to return him to California as a prisoner or free him on bail. Barrett is accused of trying to sell videos of Andrews to celebrity Web site TMZ.com and posting them online. He faces interstate stalking charges in Los Angeles, where TMZ is based. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. His neighbors in a Chicago suburb said Sunday they were surprised by his arrest. Barrett kept his yard manicured, played golf and enjoyed cooking on a gas grill on a patio behind his $300,000 suburban Chicago town house. The normalcy of his life was what made the accusations so upsetting to neighbors and acquaintances. "I'm totally shocked," said David Wayne, 72, a retired corporate executive who lives several doors down from Barrett. "He looked absolutely normal -- nothing distinguishing." Investigators believe Barrett recorded Andrews by aiming a cell phone camera through an altered peephole in the door of her hotel room. Andrews, 31, worked the Auburn-Tennessee game for ESPN on Saturday night in Knoxville, Tenn. She issued a statement after the arrest thanking FBI agents and federal prosecutors for their work and said she hoped the case will eventually help others. There didn't appear to be anyone home Sunday at Barrett's two-story, two-garage house in Westmont, a leafy, middle-class suburb about 20 miles west of Chicago lined with quaint, gas-lamp replica street lights. The housing development is favored by doctors, executives and retirees, many of whom don't have children, so people don't tend to get to know each other well as in other communities, said Dolores Shea, 79, head of the neighborhood association. Barrett kept to himself, too, Shea said, and no one interviewed on his street Sunday could provide details about his character or personal life. Shea said Barrett drove an expensive car, and she would often see him throwing golf clubs in his trunk. Barrett appeared to live with a woman, said Shea, but she didn't know the woman's relationship to Barrett. Shea said a "For Sale" sign was put up in Barrett's front
lawn about two weeks ago. A real estate Web site set the price
for the An FBI affidavit said Barrett specifically asked for a room next to Andrews at a Tennessee hotel where seven videos were likely taken, apparently through an altered peephole. An eighth video may have been shot at a Milwaukee hotel. Marriott International Inc. and Ramada Worldwide, which operate the hotels where the videos may have been shot, have issued statements saying they are concerned about their guests privacy and safety, are looking into the matter and are cooperating with authorities. Barrett's lawyer, Rick Beuke, said he did not believe Barrett had so much as a traffic ticket on his record. "He's as regular a guy as you'll ever meet -- a great friend," said Beuke, who has known him for a decade. "I must have calls from 30 people wanting to know what they could do to help." Beuke said Barrett has been divorced for some time and has
children. The Combined Insurance Company of America confirmed
Several TV networks and newspapers aired clips or printed screen grabs from the videos of Andrews in July. She has covered hockey, college football, college basketball and Major League Baseball for Disney-owned ESPN since 2004 and was named "sexiest sportscaster" by Playboy magazine in 2008 and 2009. |

"Toy Story 3D"
Double Feature is a Blast Reel Empire - I consider myself to be a part of the Pixar generation, that is to say a generation of kids raised on Pixar films which started out great and have only gotten better as I’ve gotten older. The first Pixar full length feature film came out when I was nine years old, and I distinctly remember my dad taking me to see it and I was blown away from the first moments when I saw the Disney castle rendered with computer graphics till the very end of the film. That movie was “Toy Story.” The movie was instantly iconic and revolutionized the way we see animated movies. But most importantly it told a simple, sweet, and funny story. So it’s not surprising that after not having seen this movie for years and years it still is just as good as it ever was. Currently there is a limited engagement double feature of “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2” in 3D presumably to prepare a new set of kids for the long time in the making “Toy Story 3” which comes out next summer. “Toy Story” is about
what toys do when we aren’t looking. They are actually alive and
take their duty to make children happy very |
